I'm from Merritt Island Fla and moved to NE Ga near Hartwell and this is the prettiest soil I've ever seen why on gods green earth aren't their more growers here . I'm having the time of my life ! I just moved here and got a late start but expect good things for the most part and am real excited to plant my Fall garden in August. Best Greens on the planet come from this soil ?
Bella Rosa, Red Snapper, Sun Gold, are variety I keep hearing good reports on for Southern growers. An indeterminate one is Big Beef. The hot humid deep south just isn't ideal for tomatoes so it's important to plant as early as possible. Even if you must go out nightly to cover up plants because of potential frost. Second week of April if not earlier. By 4th of July you are pretty well finished even if blight hasn't got your plants yet they won't set fruit any longer. You can however start Fall tomatoes in August to harvest before Thanksgiving.
Wow, it doesn’t look like you have any disease at all. We have had a ton of rain here in North Carolina over April and May, so disease hit us pretty hard. I had leaf spot everywhere by late April. Do you spray your tomatoes with anything?

I'm gonna ditch strict Florida weave and try that large square netting. I'll weave them once and not complete the figure 8 support since that'll be impossible. However, they can grow into the holes easily and I won't have to make repeated weaves throughout the growing season. I hate doing that as I'm a commercial grower and have many things to do besides weaving.
I am Growing the Tachi tomato as my very late season tomato down here in zone 10 florida! This time of year has extremely high disease pressure. I Planted seeds in Late Feb. The plants are now 4 ft tall on May 6. Not one diseased leaf all the way to the ground. I have severe nematode problems and no sign of stress yet. Each plant has 20 to 30 tomatoes on it and 3 times as many flower clusters coming on. I have been growing tomato plants here in Florida for 30 years and I have never been so impressed! I grew Tomatoes in Maryland for 20 years and I have never seen anything like the disease resistance and production of these plants.
Trim the tops off of those that are not loading up. Keep them topped at about 5 feet and they will load up. My Mountain Merit and Mountain Fresh get to about 4 feet tall and put on 60 to 70 tomatoes at a time. My heirloom indeterminates wont put a lot on unless I pinch off the suckers and keep the tops trimmed off.
I know this was a few years ago, but if you get your welder out there and weld 3 foot extensions of rebar on the T-post, those indeterminate s will continue to grow and produce some fine tomatoes. A friend of the family, when I was growing up, always had 10 foot tall tomatoes and he had to use a step ladder to get to the fruit. He told he he use to grow up to 15 foot plants. They were great tasting tomatoes, have no idea what varieties he was growing back then. All I remember they made awesome tomato and bologna sandwiches!

Try Red Torch tomatoes. Hybrid red plum tomato with yellow stripes and dark red flesh. Very productive, fantastic flavor. AAS winner. One of the best tomatoes I've tasted.
I love watching and learning here. I also don’t prune my tomatoes, never have, but I DO put a nice open space between each plant. I feel like over the years of granular fertilizing I’ve caused a white fly problem last year. I’m thinking too much high dose fertilizer causes other problems later on, and I wonder how you felt about that. One tomato I grew up on is better boy, and I will always plant those, however, I like to do trials myself. So I’m very curious about the red snapper flavor. I really like tangy acidic tomatoes. Would you say red snapper is tangy, sweet or smoky? I have heard of some of the varieties you are growing.
Could you rate the flavor of the varieties you covered in this video just 1 to 8 or however many varieties you grew? I am assuming sungold would be number 1? I grow this every year, I hate the splitting but love the flavor!
Beautiful garden. This may be a silly question, but how do you keep your rows so clean? Not a single weed! Do you just rototil to keep them clean or do you get right down on your hands and knees and actually pull the dang things?
We use our Wheel Hoe to lightly cultivate between the rows once a week. Lightly scuffing the top inch or two of soil once a week does wonders for weed control.

I only container grow tomatoes , so the Hoss Container and the Hoss Red Snapper are the only two determinant varieties that I have and for some reason all and I mean all of my indeterminate plants died off ? But they were not from Hoss and were a prized Heirloom from up North somewhere , I do believe that it was from overwatering ( NO RAIN HERE IN TEXAS) and the roots became water logged ?
Do you use any kind of preventative for hornworms? That would be an awful lot of plants to check daily and pick hornworms off of! Love your videos by the way!
I live in TX. and gets super hot with loads of humidity and the tomatoes seem to diseases and worms if they are to close together. What do you think about that? One more question. I've been watching some other high producers of tomatoes use Master Blend and I think they use a 4-24-34. You use 20-20-20 but your plants look better. How's your humidity in GA? I prune my tomatoes so heavily in Florida 8b because our humidity levels are so high. But I kind of want to try what you did and let them get bushy next year
We've got them hammered into the ground pretty good. And the fact that you're wrapping around each post as you go down the row, takes the load off the end post.

Nematode resistant!!!!! I will be trying the Red Snapper for sure. I live in SW Florida, zone 10a, and battle with nematodes. What other seeds do you offer for nematode resistant and any advice on how to get rid of them? I have tried solarizing the soil and shrimp meal with no luck.
Hey Travis how are ya? For decades now I've been using tomato cages I made out of wire used to reinforce concrete . 5 ft tall with 6 inch squares. Im seriously considering the Florida weave for support . I usually put out about 100 plants and want to double that this year. I was wondering how difficult it is at the end of the season to remove the plants with the Florida weave. It's quite a chore with the cages and I'm no spring chicken anymore. What are your thoughts on cleaning up after using Florida weave versus tomato cages. Thank you.
It's pretty easy. I use loppers to cut the plant stems at ground level, then take a knife and go through and cut the strings at each stake. Then it all kinda rolls up so I can throw it in the burn pile.

I am north of you in Ga. All my tomato's are in 5 and 20 gallon buckets and are sitting on 4" pipe and get watered from the bottom up. Every year I plant about 20 to 30 tomato plants and it seems the heat gets them and they stop flowering. The cherry tomato plants do the best. Most of my plants get some flowers early and then thats it, they start drying out falling off. Do you have yours get flowers later on? Also when you use the drip irragation how do you keep the front of the row from getting all the fertilizer. I have used celeberties, romas, early girls, big boys, better boys, mortage lifters, cheokee purps, sun gold, one other florida variety.

Those Tachi would be a delight. I have terrible luck with Roma's here in East Texas Same zone as you, similar soil. I make a lot of salsa and those kind are great for fresh or canned Salsa. Will you carry them this year?

@@danielleaf9146 I don't prune mine, except for the bottom leaves. My plants produce like crazy! You can't feed them too much nitrogen later on. They need phosphorus and potash to produce flowers and fruit.
How did they produce in comparison to the pruning method? I grow heirlooms and I want to see if I can get more of a harvest off of them than what I've been getting. Although with temps getting in the 100s in the summer I might have to just let them bush out anyway...
Strap some tall wood post to the metal post and maybe put one on one side and alternate sides then keep your weave going.. probably just gonna need a ladder..also is that Georgia Pacific Forrest Grove next to ya?

We have never grown it. We have issues with Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus here -- really bad. So we have to mainly grow varieties that are resistant to that virus (among others).
Think you'll need some hops trellis for indeterminate varieties the hops are also in high demand because of micro brewery very high dollar crop from what I've heard

The Chef's Choice Orange shown in the video is actually a hybrid. I might have misspoke in the video. It just doesn't have as great as disease-resistance as some of those others.

Yes, we just gather the string, cut the plants at soil level with pruning shears, and put it all in the burn pile. But ours are usually done in July when temps hit the mid to upper 90s. They don't ever make it until the frost.
I did an heirloom garden this year. Most of the tomatoes produced great. The only one I’m unhappy with is Dad’s Sunset tomato. They make a tomato as pretty as can be and they’re delicious, but each plant only made 2-3. Wouldn’t recommend.
We use our Wheel Hoe (hosstools.com/product-category/wheel-hoes/) to lightly cultivate between the rows once a week -- just the first couple inches of soil, nothing too deep. This helps to kill weeds when they're tiny so they don't get large and go to seed.
You can find our twine here: hosstools.com/product/gro-tie-garden-twine/ We don't top the indeterminates, because they're usually toast here by mid-July anyways. We just let them fall over the sides. Our heat and humidity won't allow us to grow them throughout the summer.
Which variety might fare well in zone 10b coastal southern California? I grow stripsteak, sungold, little Napoli, Early Girl, yellow stripey, Celebration, but am looking for new ones.
That can vary greatly depending on soil type and outside temperatures. But assuming no rainfall, here in the south we'll water them every other day or about an hour with the drip. You could do it more frequently for a shorter amount of time if you want, but that's the schedule that works best for us.

On your big plants that are outgrowing their stakes couldn't you clone or prune some suckers and root them and set them out . Do the clones perform like the parents ? I know on some other plants that you can cut and put into production out perform the parent seed production parent ! 2-3 -4 times the volume in less time .
We're growing food year round and always rotating our crops. So the row spacing is always changing. As a result, we'd be constantly moving mulch every time we replant.
You need to put bigger steaks on your Indeturminent hierloom tomatoes. They will grow and fruit until it frost. I'm Michigan they get 10ft tall by September.
A general recommendation is to place tomato plants about 18-24 inches apart, but plant spacing actually depends a lot on the type of tomato variety you're planting. Research the variety or follow spacing guidelines on the seed packet or plant tag.

If the bottoms are rotting, that's a calcium deficiency which can also be exacerbated by excess water or infrequent watering. Feed them some calcium and they'll usually grow out of it.

No need in it. Most of these are determinate varities, so they won't get much taller than they are now. For the indeterminate or cherry types, the July heat will kill them anyways. So we just let them go while they can.

You definitely need to try Red Snapper and Bella Rosa.

Try using crab meal. The nematodes hate it because of the chiten.

We don't have many aphids. We do have healthy populations of ladybugs and Asian lady beetles, so that could be why.

We haven't grown them yet, but the breeder sent us some of the tomatoes this past fall and they were absolutely delicious!

We were using our 20-20-20 + Microboost one week, then two weeks later we'd use Calcium Nitrate. And we just kept rotating every two weeks.

Yes, we alternate B.t. and Spinosad weekly to combat any worm issues.

I've been watching some other high producers of tomatoes use Master Blend and I think they use a 4-24-34. You use 20-20-20 but your plants look better. Have you ever grown Rutger tomatoes before? They are one of the tastiest of all but I am not sure that they will do good in that Georgia heat.
Have not grown them, but will likely add them to our seed lineup next year as they are very popular.
How's your humidity in GA? I prune my tomatoes so heavily in Florida 8b because our humidity levels are so high. But I kind of want to try what you did and let them get bushy next year

We've got them hammered into the ground pretty good. And the fact that you're wrapping around each post as you go down the row, takes the load off the end post.

Nematode resistant!!!!! I will be trying the Red Snapper for sure. I live in SW Florida, zone 10a, and battle with nematodes. What other seeds do you offer for nematode resistant and any advice on how to get rid of them? I have tried solarizing the soil and shrimp meal with no luck.
Have you tried a mustard cover crop (biofumigation)? That works really well, just have to till it in the soil for it to work.

Hey Travis how are ya? For decades now I've been using tomato cages I made out of wire used to reinforce concrete . 5 ft tall with 6 inch squares. Im seriously considering the Florida weave for support .
I usually put out about 100 plants and want to double that this year. I was wondering how difficult it is at the end of the season to remove the plants with the Florida weave. It's quite a chore with the cages and I'm no spring chicken anymore. What are your thoughts on cleaning up after using Florida weave versus tomato cages. Thank you.
It's pretty easy. I use loppers to cut the plant stems at ground level, then take a knife and go through and cut the strings at each stake. Then it all kinda rolls up so I can throw it in the burn pile.

I am north of you in Ga. All my tomato's are in 5 and 20 gallon buckets and are sitting on 4" pipe and get watered from the bottom up. Every year I plant about 20 to 30 tomato plants and it seems the heat gets them and they stop flowering. The cherry tomato plants do the best. Most of my plants get some flowers early and then thats it, they start drying out falling off. Do you have yours get flowers later on? Also when you use the drip irragation how do you keep the front of the row from getting all the fertilizer. I have used celeberties, romas, early girls, big boys, better boys, mortage lifters, cheokee purps, sun gold, one other florida variety.

No pruning. We eat quite a few tomato sandwiches, can some and sell some.

@@danielleaf9146 I don't prune mine, except for the bottom leaves. My plants produce like crazy! You can't feed them too much nitrogen later on. They need phosphorus and potash to produce flowers and fruit.

How did they produce in comparison to the pruning method? I grow heirlooms and I want to see if I can get more of a harvest off of them than what I've been getting. Although with temps getting in the 100s in the summer I might have to just let them bush out anyway...
We definitely prefer not pruning now.
Strap some tall wood post to the metal post and maybe put one on one side and alternate sides then keep your weave going.. probably just gonna need a ladder..also is that Georgia Pacific Forrest Grove next to ya?
Those trees to pine trees belong to my wife's uncle. I have cut almost every single one on my property. Not a fan of those things.

Have you ever grown early girl it has been my go to tomato in south east Oklahoma it seams to like the hot humid weather here with good production good flavor and a small core so not much waste
I have early girl in Wisconsin. Also "celebrity" "big beef" "better boy" " little sicily"
We have never grown it. We have issues with Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus here -- really bad. So we have to mainly grow varieties that are resistant to that virus (among others).
Think you'll need some hops trellis for indeterminate varieties the hops are also in high demand because of micro brewery very high dollar crop from what I've heard
Beautiful crop. One question. How does the string allow the tomatoes to grow upwards? Does the limbs get caught on the string? Probably a stupid question but just curious. I'm a subscriber if that helps get an answer. Thank you
They just grow around it. No the limbs do not get caught.

Not sure any variety is particularly better for fried green tomatoes. But you want to pick the tomato right before it starts to turn.
Have you ever grown any yellow hybrids that you can recommend for the south?
The Chef's Choice Orange shown in the video is actually a hybrid. I might have misspoke in the video. It just doesn't have as great as disease-resistance as some of those others.
The Homestead tomato, you should consider trimming that one. It will go crazy with leafy growth instead of fruit.
Which fertilizer injector do you use?
I'm looking for something that let's me dissolve fertilizer. I'm looking to avoid buying liquids or at least have the option.

It is according to what you are canning. Some are better for juice, while others are better for salsa and stewed.
When your done with the tomatos and frost hits, Do you retreve the string, or just pile it all up and burn it?
Yes, we just gather the string, cut the plants at soil level with pruning shears, and put it all in the burn pile. But ours are usually done in July when temps hit the mid to upper 90s. They don't ever make it until the frost.
You have to grow varieties that are heat tolerant like Atkinson or homestead.

I did an heirloom garden this year. Most of the tomatoes produced great. The only one I’m unhappy with is Dad’s Sunset tomato. They make a tomato as pretty as can be and they’re delicious, but each plant only made 2-3. Wouldn’t recommend.

Them hierloom tomatoes will produce all summer. You pick one 2 will replace it. The more you trim and pick a hierloom the more it will produce.
They won't produce when it gets 98 degrees here in July.
Bolt your t stakes together for indeterminates. It works pretty good.
Are you regularly cultivating between your plants? Your entire crop is remarkably weed-free.
We use our Wheel Hoe (hosstools.com/product-category/wheel-hoes/) to lightly cultivate between the rows once a week -- just the first couple inches of soil, nothing too deep. This helps to kill weeds when they're tiny so they don't get large and go to seed.

We don't top the indeterminates, because they're usually toast here by mid-July anyways. We just let them fall over the sides. Our heat and humidity won't allow us to grow them throughout the summer.

How often do you water thru the drip tape and for how much time? 15 min, 1x a day for ex.... thanks ahead of time
That can vary greatly depending on soil type and outside temperatures. But assuming no rainfall, here in the south we'll water them every other day or about an hour with the drip. You could do it more frequently for a shorter amount of time if you want, but that's the schedule that works best for us.

We did a video (I think) soon after we planted them. We've got them on subsurface drip. Rows 4' apart and plants 2' apart along the row.

On your big plants that are outgrowing their stakes couldn't you clone or prune some suckers and root them and set them out . Do the clones perform like the parents ? I know on some other plants that you can cut and put into production out perform the parent seed production parent ! 2-3 -4 times the volume in less time .

Is there a reason you do not mulch your aisles and between your plants?
We're growing food year round and always rotating our crops. So the row spacing is always changing. As a result, we'd be constantly moving mulch every time we replant.
You need to put bigger steaks on your Indeturminent hierloom tomatoes. They will grow and fruit until it frost. I'm Michigan they get 10ft tall by September.
Ours are toast by July. They can't take the heat. If we used taller stakes, we'd have to use a ladder to pick them and don't want to have to do that.
How far apart are they set in the ground?
A general recommendation is to place tomato plants about 18-24 inches apart, but plant spacing actually depends a lot on the type of tomato variety you're planting. Research the variety or follow spacing guidelines on the seed packet or plant tag.

If the bottoms are rotting, that's a calcium deficiency which can also be exacerbated by excess water or infrequent watering. Feed them some calcium and they'll usually grow out of it.

How much Fertilizer do you put in your water system
Depends on the crop. With tomatoes, usually 1-2 lbs of 20-20-20 or Calcium Nitrate per fertilization.
Can you tell me what would be a good tomato seed for northern California?
I would start with Bella Rosa or Brickyard if you've never grown either of those. Both are proven winners for us.
Travis, do you and why don't you prune your plants?
No need in it. Most of these are determinate varities, so they won't get much taller than they are now. For the indeterminate or cherry types, the July heat will kill them anyways. So we just let them go while they can.

Homestead, Bella Rosa, Brickyard are all really heat-tolerant.
