This song was penned by one of the best and most prolific ‘poets’ in any music genre, Bill Anderson. You literally could listen to nothing but Anderson’s songs and still get a great understanding of what country music is all about. However, this was a song that people were afraid to record until Brad got his hands on it. BTW, Alison Krause is one of the greatest voices EVER.
My dad says he imagines Allison Krauss's voice is what an angel sounds like. Her voice is haunting and hypnotic. The video for this song is amazing. It's a throwback to the days when MTV and CMT actually played music videos and my best friend from middle and high school would spend hours watching those videos while doing our homework; I miss videos that were more like mini movies. And being a genre known for 'storytelling' songs, there are so many country videos out there that are just wonderful. This song is so amazingly written. The opening line instantly hooks you.

Oh, I've been waiting for this.. Thoughts.. Brad has an amazing voice.. Alison is said to have a perfect voice or voice if an angel. Together, they are phenomenal. Both are great directions to look. This song, though... After hearing it so many times, every time the tune starts, my heart just starts breaking. Two lines out of the song that tend to stand out are "She put him out like the end of a midnight cigarette" and "He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger". Both are great examples of lyrical genius in my mind. The story.. beautiful and heart wrenching. I'm sure you can imagine the variety of reactions that have come from this song.. the story, though, is unbiased and speaks to the inner struggle from both sides of a dark and unfortunate choice. One moment can change two lives in the best of ways or the worst. Ok, if you want to hear another female great and don't mind sad, Martina McBride's Concrete Angel is way up the list.. as is her Independence Day. Lee Ann Womack's I Hope You Dance is a great choice as is Harper Valley PTA by Jeannie C Riley. I don't recall if you've heard Patsy Cline, but she is incredible.. Crazy, Walkin' After Midnight, & I Fall To Pieces. Lord, there are so many I can't list them all 😂.

Bill Anderson, who wrote this song, has had a long, long career as a performer and song writer. Idk if you've found him yet (I'm doing my best to work through your videos 😁). One of my very favorites is "When A Man Can't Get a woman off his Mind", sung by Gene Watson. Gene has the quintessential country voice, imo.
