I very much enjoyed this! As a matter of fact, I can’t seem to get enough of the One Love experience - for that is what it was and continues to be for me. I have a deep and abiding respect for Kingsley Ben-Adir, in particular, but also for everyone who gave of their time and talent to bring this wonderful film to fruition. My One Love experience graces the shelf containing the highlights of my life, right next to the cherished photo of Bob and me … ❤
This is such a critical pedagogy to the film, thank you for this academic piece on the Cassidy System..and Kingsley for your deeply reverend and artistic immersion into it. Beautiful film, saw it too many times to count! Been working through this time period personally with my father who lived through the events in the film.. so I am grateful for the alignment and emotional memory economy its provided on Bob's journey ..and our journey within the Diaspora.

Really interesting insights into how skilled linguistic, particularly phonetic, analysis and description can percolate beyond academia and deliver practical applied impact. Bravo, JLU! Cassidy-JLU itself seems like a really good exemplar of how to render IPA-level phonemic accuracy with just the regular 26 letters of the Roman alphabet. The film-makers' endorsement underlines that.
People have to understand that if it was deep Jamaican patois the global community wouldn't understand what they were saying in the movie...they would have to use sub titles...I actually heard people who have seen the movie said they didn't understand some of what said during the movie....this wasn't just for 🇯🇲 but the 🌎
To me, this analogy and academic analysis of patois as a language is almost antithetical to Bob's rasta ideology and the Jamaican use and conception of the words that are put together to convey one's point or to communicate. Babylon always a try micro analyze what was organic to the masses. This is, in my opinion, their attempt to try to appease their complicity in ignoring and delegitimizing the merits & creative brilliance of our indigenous language which is constantly evolving and was irreversibly influenced by the rasta movement in the sixties and onwards. This has been largely unrecognized by the scholars and pundits but that fact is undeniable. The rastas whose philosophy was to not utter anything from a negative perspective as well as emphasize the oneness of God within us and universally used I/I-n-I in lieu of us, we, they, them etc. This, largely transformed the language from mere expression to poetry. Blessed love.
Do you think this conversation will help Jamaicans to master the creole or Standard English? I don't think the guests were as excited as Fae and the host. Too much hype about this film. Nobody cares about the Jamaican language.
@@Yamfoot For money. Black culture and its artefacts have always been marketable and saleable. Though the movie is largely fictional, speaking the creole lends some credibility. Read the history. Learn from the pages of ancient and most recent past!
😅Yes, we care about the Jamaican language. ‘No one’ may not care but we who care, are NOT ‘no one.’ We are people of value with types of interests in languages and cultures. We RESPECT and VALUE people’s languages as an integral part of their various cultures and who they are. Money is important, but for some minorities, in this Big World, who they are - their identity is more important than money. The language is continually changing with each generation and is of great interest to those of us who value Caribbean/ Jamaican/Black History as well as the use and influences of dialects among certain social and cultural groups within modern societies e.g., London, Birmingham, New York etc. We are LEARNERS and SHARERS because we CARE. Someone wrote the ‘proper proper’ system sharing their 👩🏽🎓knowledge and understanding of the Jamaican language. It was of great help to the American Linguist and to the Actor. Together they - the linguistic-supporters were able to aid Kingsley in his role. If Kingsley did not care and have some respect … he would NOT ‘put in the work’ to get the speech as right, as he possibly could. Aunty Fay calls this, Diligence. His diligence PAID off in more ways than one. 👏🏽⭐️🙌🏼⭐️👍🏻 It has boosted his career prospects as an actor, though he was already a very good actor. He has gained much respect for his profession.🧐 Kingsley has done well, something Hollywood always have done terribly awful. Most Jamaicans who enjoyed the movie, Love him ❤ almost as much, as dem love Bob Marley. If him did mess it up, me woulda sarry fe him. 🫣 But he didn’t - because ‘him care.’ 😍 One Love !

What was a supprise and pleasure to me .is that it wasn't in subtitle at cinema in the uk
I was surprised too that there were no subtitles, not that I wanted it. Most can understand the patios, especially the young people.
