Roger Ebert (1942 -2013) was an American film critic, historian, journalist, screenwriter, and author. He was a film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. In 1975, Ebert became the first film critic to win the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Ebert was known for his intimate, Midwestern writing voice and critical views informed by values of populism and humanism.Writing in a prose style intended to be entertaining and direct, he made sophisticated cinematic and analytical ideas more accessible to nonspecialist audiences. Ebert and Chicago Tribune critic Gene Siskel helped popularize nationally televised film reviewing when they co-hosted the PBS show Sneak Previews, followed by several variously named At the Movies programs. The two verbally sparred and traded humorous barbs while discussing films. They created and trademarked the phrase "two thumbs up," used when both gave the same film a positive review. After Siskel died in 1999, Ebert continued hosting the show with various co-hosts.
Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007) was an American pioneering television personality and figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. He was best known for his late nigh talk shows Tomorrow (NBC) and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder (CBS). His engaging style combined with his irascible attitude, made him one of the best known journalists of his time, back when having a nationally televised and thought provoking late night talk show actually meant something. It was a totally different time in television, as the news was delivered as information with no spin or opinion of the newsman. He marked the end of an era.

These Tom Snyder episodes are just fantastic..I just watch these instead of Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and any of the other late night snooze fests.
I know. Tom Snyder was one of the best at what he did. His show had an atmosphere and ambience not seen anymore.
Tom was great, my wife and I saw him coming out of a restaurant years ago in LA, we said hello, he could not have been nicer and took a moment to chat with us

Such a great storyteller. Even after he lost the ability to speak, he was just as great with his reviews in print and the use of different celebs to “read” his reviews every week on the tv show

Years ago when I went to LA a lot I used to buy fuel at the 76 station at 6678 Santa Monica BL for 94 to 98 cents a gallon.
Those were the days!
I find the camera setup really interesting on this show. It was a bit jarring at first but as ive watched more and more episodes ive grown the really like it. At 18:35 he checks in with the audience to add context and its exactly as if you were watching and listening to your father and his buddy telling stories. The camera places you in the conversation naturally and adds to the overall vibe. The 4th wall is broken in talk shows all the time but its usually to land a joke or make a statement. Here its to give you the impression you're sitting down in the conversation rather than watching it from a distance. Good shit.

OH the lost art.......... I do mean art of the storyteller. conversation on TV today is about the quick wit, fast Zingers, broken up by a tv ad every 4 min. I so miss this type of entertainment.
Idk Tom got Roger to talk about a drinking story since Roger is a reformed Alcoholic. Lost Highway was not that bad, I always felt Roger was too harsh on Lynch after Blue Velvet.

Was that the same Bob Hale who was KING's cartooning weatherman in Seattle ca. 1960?
Edit: It must be. KING fired Hale in 1963, probably related to his drinking, and he turned up at KOGO in San Diego for a spell. Hale was back in Seattle within the year, though, but after being fired again by KING, then KIRO, he went in 1970 to KNBC in Los Angeles where he and Snyder met.

I, too, enjoy Tom's 5-6 minute monologues at the top of the show. Of course, the guests are great, too, but Tom's monologues would be awesome to be put on videos, from CNBC and CBS days.

I liked Ebert. So awful what happened to him later in life and Siskel too. By the way, this was the first time I heard Ebert laugh big time, nice to hear. P.S. I remember Ebert wanted to date Oparh and when she heard that she bust out laughing in front of him, that wasn't classy.
They did go out a couple of times I believe.
Oprah did a profile on Ebert during the period that he was going through surgery and she said that they did go on a date. They remained close until his death so I don’t know what you’re talking about.
