A good prayerbook to me is the translation you are most comfortable with, and the one that fits well with your proscribed prayer rule that your spirtual father and yourself have worked out.
You have been such a lifesaver for a beginner! I love how you split it between the jurisdictions, that helped me out a lot, wasn’t even thinking about that. Been watching you for a while now and I can’t tell ya how much help you’ve been. I was thinking a cool video I’d be interested in would be one of you going through your icon corner saying which saints you picked and why, where you got them, the style etc. I saw the prayer corner video you did but thought it’d be neat you going into the specifics. Have a blessed day my friend!
Glory to God! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, and that they're helping! I've thought of doing an icon video, so maybe it's time I get to work on one...
Thanks for the video. I am a Catholic Seminarian for the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church, but my time with the Eastern Orthodox Church (OCA/GoArch) has impacted my the depth of my prayer life. I hope you have a wonderful Pascha. Christus Resurrexit!
I use a mix of prayer books, depending on how much time I have. If I've planned my morning/evening correctly, I like the completeness of the Jordanville... it has All the Prayers and All the Intercessions, and was the first prayer book I started using when I was chrismated in 2015. If, as happens all too often, I mis-plan, over-sleep, or wait till it's too late for me to be fully awake and coherent, I use the much briefer little red prayer book. Sometimes I will use the St. Tikhon's because I really like it! But mostly, I keep going back to Jordanville.
The Antiochian has red and black versions. I have the black version. Basically it's the same as the red one, only the cover is different in color. Very handy for me as I can carry it everywhere especially in mission areas. Mine is very much used because of it. I also have the Jordanville one which is used at home.
@@OrthodoxReview Well this would almost be two years, and as well I see you also made a video on the Old Believers prayer book, so an updated video on this would be welcome.
Roman Catholic loving what im see from the eastern churches. Considering Byzantine, this helps a lot! Heart sunk when you said you scribbled the pope out
The Ancient Faith Prayer Book is also available on the Orthodox Marketplace website, which is part of GOARCH, so they apparently like it a good bit, as well. GOARCH themselves only publish one straight up prayer book that isn't geared towards a specific group, like kids or teens, that I've found, at least. It's Daily Prayers for Orthodox Christians, and apparently it's pretty good, but I don't have it myself.
The Agpeya is the Egyptian (Coptic) Orthodox prayerbook of the Seven Hours and is a great prayerbook for the hours of the day including midnight, vespers, and compline.
I may have missed it but there are popular prayer books like ‘Hear Me’ for older teens and young adults published by Ancient Faith. Also ‘The Ascetic Lives of Mothers’ again by Ancient Faith and published in many languages. (Author of both Annalisa Boyd) These are not only for regular prayer time, but times when family stress or pressure from peers seems overwhelming. (Both are on Audible)
The little red pocket prayer book was the first one I ever had my god father gave it to me. I like it for traveling and I cherish it because it was a gift from him but it uses old English and so I don't prefer it. The one I use most often is the one by Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Boston. Everybody around here uses that one. Whether they are Greek, Serbian, Rocor, OCA, etc.
It's very popular! Luckily, most orthodox book sellers, and Amazon, have it readily available! Try SVSPRESS.COM holycross.org or others. Glory to God, may He bless you on your journey!

I contributed to the funding of this project and will be receiving a first edition copy bound in Sheepskin. If you would like, I can email pictures of my copy when it comes in. Just let me know.
Hey bro. I’m not a fan of some of these modern translations so I’m withholding judgement for now. Honestly, I always have Little Red with me and I love the Hapgood Service book, the New Rome book, and finally, the Orthodox Christian Prayers book. Like you, I have a lot of books but the ones I just listed are the books that I use the most. Even with the typesetting issues in Little Red - oddly enough, I still think it’s my favorite. Hi Raphael, just wanted to ask if youve read or done a review on the book 'Habitation of Holiness a selection of writings by Saint Nektarios'? Im thinking of buying it but would love to know a bit more about it before hand. Thanks brother all the best.
Hello there, I've just found your channel and am enjoying your prayer book reviews. So far I have the "little red book". I like it, but am after another pocket-sized prayer book that has a more expansive selection of prayers for different needs and occasions and doesn't include the entire divine liturgy. Do you have suggestions of what might fit the bill? Thanks, Deborah.
Thanks @@OrthodoxReview, I appreciate your suggestion :) I also have my eye on the Manual of Eastern Orthodox Prayers and the new Orthodox Christian Prayers. Just wondering - have you seen the Orthodox Prayer Book from Holy Protection Monastery and the Manual of Occasional Prayers from Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery? I'd love to see a review of those as well if they ever fall into your hands :) Thanks again!
How do you personally incorporate the use of psalters into your prayer life? Being a fan of Father Reardon’s podcast, he frequently promotes the use of the Psalms as THE prayer book of the church. To be fair, he speaks highly of these types of prayers (the ones in the books you’re reviewing), but he has casually dropped that he goes as far as to tell parishioners who ask how to build a better prayer life to start memorizing psalms.
Fr. Pat rocks! For incorporating the Psalms, (a Kathisma at Vespers and two at Matins) there's an interesting online resource that I rely on heavily, esp. when I travel. "Liturgyio" online has a whole variety of daily prayer structures, initially just for Orthodox, but now expanded for all "Classical Christians". Their Dynamic Horologion (with the Troparia & Kontakia for the saints commemorated each day, though not entirely "Feast-sensitive") is awesome. I love the new feature for searching a different day/time than the current hour, too -- happy hunting!
@@OrthodoxReview Thank you! And one other question sorry - Regarding your prayer corner video, would any icon of Christ be good, or the particular one that you use? (The light of the world)

If you're looking for a Syro Malabar one, which is East Syriac, there are a couple ones that I use. I also have an Assyrian one as well. I can share them with you if you're interested. I have a West Syrian one as well. However, it's not the one used in the Middle East, it is the one we use in India. There are all links though.

I'm a huge Reardon fan as well. I try to read a kathisma a day from the prescribed order, but at the very least, I'll read a random psalm
An easy way to start is to pray a stasis in the morning and a stasis in the evening.
But even if you just pray one stasis a day, you'll go through the entire Psalter six times in a year. Neat, huh? And more than manageable.
Some prayer books include the Psalms, like the UOC prayer book and the mini Jordanville prayer book (which is also the cutest little thing ever! :-)
