Yeah, in Arkham Asylum you need to avoid enemies to get guns from boxes, stun higher class enemies that cannot be blocked and deal fucking damage, the triangle button is useful because after a combo most likely you need to block someonr, Dunkey is making a bad example of why this game could be any baf

Have any of you ever played this game? Triangle is only there to put cool reactions in, you can keep pressing it, but you'll be there for hours. Even the first game had variation in the fighting. It's not their fault you all chose to press triangle non stop. Maybe the issue is games can't be made with exploitable features because idiots like you exist
As Niall Hayes said, you deal no damage with the triangle button - it's just a counter button. It's how you avoid the attacks of most ordinary thugs. He could've been mashing it for an hour and nothing would have happened. It's not the only way to counter, either; with some enemies, you have to jump back at a precise moment or stun them with your cape. In addition, there are a couple of ways to actually fight in this game. You have like a bunch of gadgets that you could use to spice up battles and stack up hit combos to perform cool combo moves. The sneaking up thing is not just "brain-dead gaming" - in the majority of these situations, there are a multitude of armed enemies patrolling the map, and you're under pressure to act and think quick during these situations because if an enemy stumbles upon your body or catches you in the act of knocking one out, they can expose and destroy your hiding spot, shoot at you, and make it a lot more difficult for you. If that's too easy, there's a New Game + mode that makes it harder. I do agree that the AGLs he mentioned were unnecessary, but they only took up a couple seconds each and came with the bonus of engaging me by making me do something other than just hold the thumb stick while listening to someone talk. I also agree with him on the dumbass batarang precision parts of the game - such a fucking pain in the ass. I'm a big fan of Dunkey, but I disagree with him on this video.

To be fair, the game gets harder as you progress. Even if you don't care about combos, the game gets more enemies that you can't just press Y to counter. And the stealth sequences also are a little bit more complicated than just going up behind someone and pressing Y there is also you know strategy involved. Also a lot of this footage is like 5% into the game so of course things are easier when it's the start. I'm 99.9% sure this is a joke because i watch a lot of dunkey and he does some weird shit which is pretty funny but this is just in case
I agree. It was also weird that Electrocutioner is beaten in one hit, despite them not being a joke character or anything; they were a legitimate villain in some of the Batman comics.

the things that carried this game up to the pedestal are the creative boss fights, engaging riddler puzzles and a bunch of secrets scattered all across the city. i finished the main story quiet fast and the side missions and riddle puzzles are what makes me want to go on for more. although some of the puzzles are plain brain dead. most of the challenges are quiet engaging
The boss fight are hardly creative. You don't need fancy boss fight if the basic combat is any good. Ninja Gaiden sigma 2 has incredible combat. It doesn't add these flashy empty boss fights because it doesn't need them.
Siddiq Ismail I haven't exactly counted, but it's much easier to test when you defeat all the enemies except for one or two first. When you're just fighting one or two, it's a lot less tedious to test out counter-spamming, and you will defeat them.
Kromblite It usually finishes them off automatically when there's one left and you counter. If there is more than 1 or 2 than it just pushes them back.

It does happen, each enemy has a hidden health bar which is why sometimes a batarang can knock someone out, counter attacks just do very little damage compared to a punch which is why it doesn't happen very often if you fight normally, it will take forever but you can win a fight just pressing counter over and over (obviously this wouldn't work with the special enemies).

The video is a joke, the triangle button does no damage and there are many more enemies who you can't counter with triangle, and the stealth is a lot more complex due to enemies taking out gargoyles, being alert and travelling together. I'm pretty sure he just wanted to piss people off
Goose Boi No, this isn’t satire. Him only pressing triangle was him SLIGHTLY exaggerating how rudimentary the combat is. It’s square and triangle. There is very little timing involved with countering in the game. The combat is outlandishly easy and boring. This is a legitimate critique of Arkham City’s preposterous rating. He talks about it even further in his review on video game critics.

But it also let's you mix in gadgets and stuns and combos, such as the bat claw, electric shock and batarangs. You can't get angry at a game for letting you play like a bitch and giving you options. If you actually mix in gadgets you I'll enjoy yourself, so just try it lad. You also have to dodge over enemies, jump on them to do a shield takedown, dodge blades. Have you even played the game?
Goose Boi The game doesn’t incentivize you to do that like Insomniac does, for example, in the new Spider-Man game. I am telling you that Dunkey does think this game is overrated. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t think it’s a good game. Just because a game is good does NOT mean it deserves a stupidly high rating. The game is an 80 at best. It did nothing exceptionally well. I enjoy the games, just like most anyone else could. They’re simple games, and they sure as hell aren’t masterpieces.
A few holes in this criticism: - Firstly, mashing counter both kills your combo, and (thus) yields non fatal results - as evidenced by the video where no one gets KO'd. Second, armored guards (and Jammers) address the Silent Takedown frenzy issue - granted, I still fell into a routine albeit a more challenging one. And lastly, the general degree of difficulty in this game is something I commend for the most part. The player almost entirely determines the metric for challenge by their own volition. You can waltz through combat with 3-5 maneuvers but the true difficulty lies within diversifying your combos, and more to that point treating each encounter as a component that exists outside of the game - just like turn based combat in an RPG. Riddler's Revenge alludes to this very point where it forces the player to gain a penchant for variation and consistency.
Quib Hill I don't know man, wouldn't you say most of these complaints are pretty adherent to 2015's AK as well? It's riddled with filler, they doubled down on his agility, and they didn't reinvent combat - they simply refined it. And maybe it's just me but this comment section looks plenty active in 2016, and full of combat detractors. Heck, I only made this comment 13 hours ago and someone's already responded...
His points about the combat only work for basic thugs. Spamming counter doesn't work for stun sticks and shields. Also, the batarang part makes no sense. You have to pass it through the electricity first, and dunkey had to have known that.
The stealth requires immense creativity when dueling Mr. Freeze on Hard New Story Plus (which indicates to me that Dunkey never played it above easy or normal or never on one of the New Plus modes), because you actually have to use all 16 or so possible techniques in the entire game in terms of stealth takedowns. Plus the riddler's revenge stealth matches on the hard setting and on the extreme modes are pretty insanely difficult to beat and get all of the bonus objectives. Especially Strange's lair.
The problem is that the basic thugs make up 90% of the enemy groups in the game. I’d argue that the bosses are the most interesting to fight since you can’t spam against. That can’t save the game, but it’s just something I noticed. As for the batarang, Batman’s dialogue when he hits the box is a bit misleading. He should’ve said something along the lines of, “I need to charge the batarang with electricity before hitting the box”. I know that it’s not the most creative way of saying it, but my point stands. Dunkey certainly figured it out, he was just mislead at first, and that couldn’t have been his fault. I don’t agree with everything he said though. For instance, I don’t think the stealth is as mindless as he said it was. It’s probably not as good as the splinter cell games, but it’s perfectly good. I can’t really go too in depth on it since it’s been a while since I last played it, but I thought it was fine. He was absolutely right about the combat though (in my opinion).
The Mr. Freeze fight is completely overrated though. I have no clue as to why the game gives you the exact hints as to how to beat him, but it really sucks. I see people say that he’s among the best boss fights of the last generation, but I really don’t get it. It’s just a slow and boring fight. If anyone can explain to me why the fight was so good, I’d love to hear why you liked it because I’m genuinely baffled as to what’s so great about it.
Owen Manton because so many boss fights in modern gaming is just “hit this part of the boss over and over again” or “sit in this corner of the room and mash this button to attack it.” Mr Freezes fight takes creativity, luring him over to spots to do a different kind of takedown because he adapts every time you use a take down.
My favorite part about Dunkey videos were he is actually serious about the message are the people who get so defensive about the game they ride so hard on they convince themselves that it is all a joke like his other videos. Even when Dunkey shows the gameplay that reflects his words.

For someone who often critiques movies with great stories, it surprises me that you found the story to this game boring. I personally found it to be one of the best I’ve played. It’s full of twists and has an amazing ending. Plus the combat gets super engaging once you get further into the story. Of course it starts out easy. Hitting counter forever won’t do knock out any enemies and you will get destroyed by enemies with weapons.

What I will say is that the slightly more toned down scale of Asylum was better imo. I mean, the scale of City and Knight were fucking impressive and I had a lot of fun with both, but something about being trapped (or, not trapped, because it's Batman) on an island with Joker, a handful of other villains + gangs of goons made Asylum feel more immersive to me somehow. Even though the combat is way obsolete after City.

Arkham asylum is my 2nd favorites game sitting right next to resident evil 4 because everything about asylum just worked and I also love being on the island instead of a city
Also the story made sense. The dialogs in Asylum weren't great (except for the Joker, he was perfect) but in Arkham City every piece of dialog and plot point seems half-assed. What's Hugo Strange's plan? To pronounce Arkham City a failure and get permission to kill all inmates? And then open several new city prisons in different cities? You know, following the SUCCESS of Arkham City. Joker suddenly becomes a Dragon Ball villain where his main goal is immortality. The only good thing as far as the plot goes is the great plot twist with the double Joker. But even though it's cool, unexpected but also foreshadowed it serves no purpose (apart for shooting Thalia which was really stupid and also a spontenous event, so it's not like Joker planned for this).
The whole thing about "spam Y to win" is kinda a dumb argument, because soon in the story they introduce different enemy types that have to be defeated with different combos.

peshawa skyrim I'll say you give a fair point on the technical issues and perhaps you don't like the fighting, but the combat evolves and you will have to get more and more careful as the enemies evolve later on in the game, it is a fact you can't just pres triangle forever even at the beginning of the game.
He isn't even wrong about the time wasting. You go on a side quest to save Freeze, which leads to a side quest to take down Penguin, which lead to a side quest to find Ra's Al Ghul. That's 75% of the game right there.

I understand, but there's true mastery of the combat that you can use. When you get the hang of it, you get to get to x200 combos and more. It becomes a deadly dance of death, specifically on the harder difficulties and new game plus. Also, Ra's Al Ghul is pronounced correctly in the game.
+Jason Agosto getting 200 hit combos are still easy and don’t require all that mastery, even on new game plus and harder difficulty, actually the only difference between hard and normal is the amount of the damage the enemy’s inflict, so unless you have non gamer reflexes, you can dodge 99% of the attacks.
+Rai Devil Play Arkhan Knight & use variation on AR challenges to get top 100 on any world leaderboard, that's not easy. I could get 1000x combo with mere strikes & counters with one hand.

Ku Ku Klock not really. I went through that entire game on whichever difficulty gets rid of the projections and I never took a hit of melee damage. Game suffers from not fully committing to either stealth or combat so you end up with and incredibly easy game that is all flash, no thunder.

Because there are plenty of enemy variables in mellee combat alone, to say otherwise makes you blatantly wrong, you have normal thugs, shield thugs, electric baton thugs, the hammer twins, thugs that will go to fetch guns, thugs throwing items, the enemies you have to to stun whose name I can't remember, ninjas as well as titans, all of which require different combinations and tactics to beat and it's especially varied when they are all together. Just press triangle through all that and see how far you get.
TheTarantuRoach not for all enemies. You have to stun some before being able to even damage them which takes a bunch of punches. Playing Arkham City by only pressing two buttons is like spamming the punch and kick in Street Fighter. Learning and using combos makes combat a lot better.

Zack Larsson there are different types of enemies in the games who force you to use different methods other than punching to defeat them. People with stun batons who you can’t counter and need to get behind to attack, guys with shields that the bat claw and regular punches wouldn’t work on, people with guns that force you to attack a group as quickly as possible in order to avoid getting shot, etc. Take into account that there are multiple gadgets to choose from which you can use yet doesn’t stop the combat from flowing at a fast pace.
Siphon let me count up shadow of wars then which has a bit of variety in its combat: big trolls that can’t be stunned or executed with one hit, defender with shield that you need to get around, savages that you can’t hit without stunning, archers that are ranged, hunters that throw Spears so are equally good close up as far away, caragors which are tiger like beast, graugs which are giant trolls with horns, drakes which are small dragons, captains that have huge variation in weakness and strenghts and things that can stun them and make the stronger and things they are immune against, siege beasts that are like mortars, caragor riders which are orcs on caragors so you need to kill the caragor as Well, ringwraiths which can teleport and can’t be stunned. That’s real variety.

There are enemies with knives who you have to dodge with a certain timing to take them down, ninjas who have similar blade mechanics yet are quicker and dodge your attacks as well, a one handed man with a hammer who you had to combine dodging and stunning to beat, robotic wonder guardians, and various other bosses who require ways to defeat them that are unique to them. Also, combat doesn’t mainly focus on enemy types. There are countless ways to defeat a group of enemies through different simultaneous button pressing combos and, as I’ve stated before, the number of gadgets that are available. It’s literally as fun as you want to make it.

No, but some of the criticism is not really well thought. For example he called Batman "mentally brain dead with no charisma". This is literally Batman's character, to show barely any emotion and not let anything faze him. This is also one of the coolest aspects of Batman, he doesn't care about almost anything. The combat while very repetitive and boring is in some aspects actually satisfying and easy to zone out in.

Yeah, in Arkham Asylum you need to avoid enemies to get guns from boxes, stun higher class enemies that cannot be blocked and deal fucking damage, the triangle button is useful because after a combo most likely you need to block someonr, Dunkey is making a bad example of why this game could be any baf

Buttttt there's no reason to play the game like that. Just because you can make skyrim boring by using some of the overpowered magic doesn't mean it's a bad game. It's just exploitable the same way standing around countering everything makes the arkham games boring.
Have any of you ever played this game? Triangle is only there to put cool reactions in, you can keep pressing it, but you'll be there for hours. Even the first game had variation in the fighting. It's not their fault you all chose to press triangle non stop. Maybe the issue is games can't be made with exploitable features because idiots like you exist
As Niall Hayes said, you deal no damage with the triangle button - it's just a counter button. It's how you avoid the attacks of most ordinary thugs. He could've been mashing it for an hour and nothing would have happened. It's not the only way to counter, either; with some enemies, you have to jump back at a precise moment or stun them with your cape.
In addition, there are a couple of ways to actually fight in this game. You have like a bunch of gadgets that you could use to spice up battles and stack up hit combos to perform cool combo moves.
The sneaking up thing is not just "brain-dead gaming" - in the majority of these situations, there are a multitude of armed enemies patrolling the map, and you're under pressure to act and think quick during these situations because if an enemy stumbles upon your body or catches you in the act of knocking one out, they can expose and destroy your hiding spot, shoot at you, and make it a lot more difficult for you.
If that's too easy, there's a New Game + mode that makes it harder.
I do agree that the AGLs he mentioned were unnecessary, but they only took up a couple seconds each and came with the bonus of engaging me by making me do something other than just hold the thumb stick while listening to someone talk.
I also agree with him on the dumbass batarang precision parts of the game - such a fucking pain in the ass.

To be fair, the game gets harder as you progress. Even if you don't care about combos, the game gets more enemies that you can't just press Y to counter. And the stealth sequences also are a little bit more complicated than just going up behind someone and pressing Y there is also you know strategy involved. Also a lot of this footage is like 5% into the game so of course things are easier when it's the start. I'm 99.9% sure this is a joke because i watch a lot of dunkey and he does some weird shit which is pretty funny but this is just in case

the things that carried this game up to the pedestal are the creative boss fights, engaging riddler puzzles and a bunch of secrets scattered all across the city. i finished the main story quiet fast and the side missions and riddle puzzles are what makes me want to go on for more. although some of the puzzles are plain brain dead. most of the challenges are quiet engaging

Siddiq Ismail I haven't exactly counted, but it's much easier to test when you defeat all the enemies except for one or two first. When you're just fighting one or two, it's a lot less tedious to test out counter-spamming, and you will defeat them.
Kromblite It usually finishes them off automatically when there's one left and you counter. If there is more than 1 or 2 than it just pushes them back.

I actually know someone who only presses triangle whenever he is fighting anyone. It takes him years to actually take out everyone. Guys a scrub.

Counter attacks don't automatically knock out a enemy in fact it almost never happens.
It does happen, each enemy has a hidden health bar which is why sometimes a batarang can knock someone out, counter attacks just do very little damage compared to a punch which is why it doesn't happen very often if you fight normally, it will take forever but you can win a fight just pressing counter over and over (obviously this wouldn't work with the special enemies).

This video confuses me now, because in his "Picking on Rockstar Games" video. He included Rocksteady Studios among the developers who always put out good games.

There is very little timing involved with countering in the game. The combat is outlandishly easy and boring. This is a legitimate critique of Arkham City’s preposterous rating. He talks about it even further in his review on video game critics.

But it also let's you mix in gadgets and stuns and combos, such as the bat claw, electric shock and batarangs. You can't get angry at a game for letting you play like a bitch and giving you options. If you actually mix in gadgets you I'll enjoy yourself, so just try it lad. You also have to dodge over enemies, jump on them to do a shield takedown, dodge blades. Have you even played the game?
Goose Boi The game doesn’t incentivize you to do that like Insomniac does, for example, in the new Spider-Man game. I am telling you that Dunkey does think this game is overrated. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t think it’s a good game. Just because a game is good does NOT mean it deserves a stupidly high rating. The game is an 80 at best. It did nothing exceptionally well. I enjoy the games, just like most anyone else could. They’re simple games, and they sure as hell aren’t masterpieces.
A few holes in this criticism:
- Firstly, mashing counter both kills your combo, and (thus) yields non fatal results - as evidenced by the video where no one gets KO'd. Second, armored guards (and Jammers) address the Silent Takedown frenzy issue - granted, I still fell into a routine albeit a more challenging one.
And lastly, the general degree of difficulty in this game is something I commend for the most part. The player almost entirely determines the metric for challenge by their own volition. You can waltz through combat with 3-5 maneuvers but the true difficulty lies within diversifying your combos, and more to that point treating each encounter as a component that exists outside of the game - just like turn based combat in an RPG.
Riddler's Revenge alludes to this very point where it forces the player to gain a penchant for variation and consistency.
Quib Hill I don't know man, wouldn't you say most of these complaints are pretty adherent to 2015's AK as well? It's riddled with filler, they doubled down on his agility, and they didn't reinvent combat - they simply refined it.

His points about the combat only work for basic thugs. Spamming counter doesn't work for stun sticks and shields. Also, the batarang part makes no sense. You have to pass it through the electricity first, and dunkey had to have known that.
The stealth requires immense creativity when dueling Mr. Freeze on Hard New Story Plus (which indicates to me that Dunkey never played it above easy or normal or never on one of the New Plus modes), because you actually have to use all 16 or so possible techniques in the entire game in terms of stealth takedowns. Plus the riddler's revenge stealth matches on the hard setting and on the extreme modes are pretty insanely difficult to beat and get all of the bonus objectives. Especially Strange's lair.

The problem is that the basic thugs make up 90% of the enemy groups in the game. I’d argue that the bosses are the most interesting to fight since you can’t spam against. That can’t save the game, but it’s just something I noticed.
As for the batarang, Batman’s dialogue when he hits the box is a bit misleading. He should’ve said something along the lines of, “I need to charge the batarang with electricity before hitting the box”. I know that it’s not the most creative way of saying it, but my point stands. Dunkey certainly figured it out, he was just mislead at first, and that couldn’t have been his fault.
I don’t agree with everything he said though. For instance, I don’t think the stealth is as mindless as he said it was. It’s probably not as good as the splinter cell games, but it’s perfectly good. I can’t really go too in depth on it since it’s been a while since I last played it, but I thought it was fine. He was absolutely right about the combat though (in my opinion).
The Mr. Freeze fight is completely overrated though. I have no clue as to why the game gives you the exact hints as to how to beat him, but it really sucks. I see people say that he’s among the best boss fights of the last generation, but I really don’t get it. It’s just a slow and boring fight. If anyone can explain to me why the fight was so good, I’d love to hear why you liked it because I’m genuinely baffled as to what’s so great about it.
Owen Manton because so many boss fights in modern gaming is just “hit this part of the boss over and over again” or “sit in this corner of the room and mash this button to attack it.” Mr Freezes fight takes creativity, luring him over to spots to do a different kind of takedown because he adapts every time you use a take down.
My favorite part about Dunkey videos were he is actually serious about the message are the people who get so defensive about the game they ride so hard on they convince themselves that it is all a joke like his other videos.
Even when Dunkey shows the gameplay that reflects his words.

For someone who often critiques movies with great stories, it surprises me that you found the story to this game boring. I personally found it to be one of the best I’ve played. It’s full of twists and has an amazing ending. Plus the combat gets super engaging once you get further into the story. Of course it starts out easy. Hitting counter forever won’t do knock out any enemies and you will get destroyed by enemies with weapons.

What I will say is that the slightly more toned down scale of Asylum was better imo. I mean, the scale of City and Knight were fucking impressive and I had a lot of fun with both, but something about being trapped (or, not trapped, because it's Batman) on an island with Joker, a handful of other villains + gangs of goons made Asylum feel more immersive to me somehow. Even though the combat is way obsolete after City.
I get you. It just felt right, like it felt like the cartoons from the 90's with Joker, Harley Quinn and major villains trying to kill Batman. Or am I wrong?

Arkham asylum is my 2nd favorites game sitting right next to resident evil 4 because everything about asylum just worked and I also love being on the island instead of a city
Also the story made sense. The dialogs in Asylum weren't great (except for the Joker, he was perfect) but in Arkham City every piece of dialog and plot point seems half-assed. What's Hugo Strange's plan? To pronounce Arkham City a failure and get permission to kill all inmates? And then open several new city prisons in different cities? You know, following the SUCCESS of Arkham City. Joker suddenly becomes a Dragon Ball villain where his main goal is immortality.
The only good thing as far as the plot goes is the great plot twist with the double Joker. But even though it's cool, unexpected but also foreshadowed it serves no purpose (apart for shooting Thalia which was really stupid and also a spontenous event, so it's not like Joker planned for this).

I understand, but there's true mastery of the combat that you can use. When you get the hang of it, you get to get to x200 combos and more. It becomes a deadly dance of death, specifically on the harder difficulties and new game plus. Also, Ra's Al Ghul is pronounced correctly in the game.

TheTarantuRoach not for all enemies. You have to stun some before being able to even damage them which takes a bunch of punches. Playing Arkham City by only pressing two buttons is like spamming the punch and kick in Street Fighter. Learning and using combos makes combat a lot better.

Zack Larsson there are different types of enemies in the games who force you to use different methods other than punching to defeat them. People with stun batons who you can’t counter and need to get behind to attack, guys with shields that the bat claw and regular punches wouldn’t work on, people with guns that force you to attack a group as quickly as possible in order to avoid getting shot, etc. Take into account that there are multiple gadgets to choose from which you can use yet doesn’t stop the combat from flowing at a fast pace.
Siphon let me count up shadow of wars then which has a bit of variety in its combat: big trolls that can’t be stunned or executed with one hit, defender with shield that you need to get around, savages that you can’t hit without stunning, archers that are ranged, hunters that throw Spears so are equally good close up as far away, caragors which are tiger like beast, graugs which are giant trolls with horns, drakes which are small dragons, captains that have huge variation in weakness and strenghts and things that can stun them and make the stronger and things they are immune against, siege beasts that are like mortars, caragor riders which are orcs on caragors so you need to kill the caragor as Well, ringwraiths which can teleport and can’t be stunned. That’s real variety.

There are enemies with knives who you have to dodge with a certain timing to take them down, ninjas who have similar blade mechanics yet are quicker and dodge your attacks as well, a one handed man with a hammer who you had to combine dodging and stunning to beat, robotic wonder guardians, and various other bosses who require ways to defeat them that are unique to them. Also, combat doesn’t mainly focus on enemy types. There are countless ways to defeat a group of enemies through different simultaneous button pressing combos and, as I’ve stated before, the number of gadgets that are available. It’s literally as fun as you want to make it.

No, but some of the criticism is not really well thought. For example he called Batman "mentally brain dead with no charisma". This is literally Batman's character, to show barely any emotion and not let anything faze him. This is also one of the coolest aspects of Batman, he doesn't care about almost anything. The combat while very repetitive and boring is in some aspects actually satisfying and easy to zone out in.
