Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders: Review/Demo

Suggestions on which powders to use for different skin tones, types and for different purposes:
FAIR SKIN: Diffused can work as an all-over face powder for fair skin. Ethereal can also work if you're very fair but generally makes a nice highlight. Mood is an incredibly beautiful blush (especially for cooler complexions and natural red-heads). Dim can be used to add warmth to the skin or contour (Dim is the least "glowy" so it works as a contour shade for the lightest complexions). Luminous can be used to add warmth and color but it's the most frosted of all the powders and Radiant light can easily look orange on fair skin (especially cool-toned, fair skin).
MEDIUM SKIN: For most medium skin tones Dim works well as a light-weight setting powder (honestly it's probably the most universally flattering and according to Hourglass, it's also one of their best sellers). Mood can work well to add a barely there glow on most medium and olive complexions. Diffused and Ethereal can both work as highlighters but Diffused has a touch more warmth to it. Luminous can also be used as a highlight but again, it's got a lot of shine (most medium skin-tones won't notice much of a color with Luminous, mostly just shine). Radiant can give medium skin tones a sun-kissed glow with a lot of warmth, especially on warm-toned skin. Jessica Alba wore Radiant Light to provide an all-over glow at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards, you can view a video clip of that here.
DARK SKIN: Radiant and Luminous are your best options. Both have a lot of shine in them so they won't make a good satin finish setting powder but if you don't mind the glow, Radiant Light looks beautiful on deep skin tones. Between Ethereal and Diffused as a highlighter, I'd reach for Diffused first; in my experience the pale yellow doesn't look chalky but (as with all of these) I'd recommending testing it out first. Dim is the most matte of the bunch and could look chalky on dark skin but its still work looking at -- The only shade to really be careful of is Mood. The lavender/plum tones it in often read as ashy on dark skin.
MATURE SKIN: Any of the shades work well, if you stay away from frost than avoid Radiant and Luminous Light as they ARE the most frosted of the bunch. These aren't glittery though, even if you see some in the pan, it doesn't translate to the face and if you like glow then every powder is an option.
PHOTOGRAPHY: I haven't noticed any issues with flash-back in flash photography (the skin appearing lighter than it actually is). The glow that you see in person translates well in photos (think glow, not glitter).
PROFESSIONAL MUAs: If you're a professional makeup artist and looking to add these to your kit, you'll get the most used out of Dim -- it's versatile and works across most skin tones. Diffused and Radiant are the next ones I'd recommend as both a highlight (Diffused) and sun-kissed bronze for medium skin and natural glow for dark skin (Radiant). Mood is my personal favorite of the six but I think it's best suited for fairer skin tones so it's one of the least versatile powders.
FINAL THOUGHTS: These are definitely a product in the same category as Guerlain's Meteorites. Expect a "lit from within" glow, a "barely there" finish and a "what's different about your skin?" kind of look. Comparing them to Meteorites these are definitely more pigmented but compared to other pressed powders, bronzers and blushes these are hardly pigmented at all. In my experience Meteorites are also more glittery, less glowing and are perfumed whereas the Hourglass powders have no noticeable fragrance.

Hourglass says - and I think that it's worth repeating - that these are "free of parabens, talc, fragrance, nano-particles and gluten." I know from experience that it can be hard to find gluten-free cosmetics (and most companies don't bother testing for it).

I've gone through so many videos reviewing these and most of them have some vapid person just rambling on and on before giving scattered information on the product. This is by far the best review- not boring but explains everything about the product in a non-confusing way.

I think you did the best video breaking down the Ambient powders!! I watched this years ago & have come back to it a few times when I wanted a new color or even a new Ambient blush or bronzer because those are also mixed with the original powders.

Your review is extremely helpful! Bad for my wallet, but helpful. I picked up Ethereal and Diffused in the VIB sale, and now I'm regretting not also getting Mood Light. I may have to go back for it anyway. I apply these with a NARS Ita Kabuki brush, which is thin and flat, so I can sweep the powder across my skin for a light, even application.
You're right. At first I bought the Ambient Lighting Palette and just fell in love with it. Then I reordered Dim Light and a few other ones so right now I have about 5 of their colors. If any of you do not have one, I swear, you HAVE to get at least one and see it for yourself! It's to die for seriously.
Thanks for the helpful video! Yep, I started with Mood, which makes a stunner blush on my fair skin. Then came diffused, which looks lovely over my moisturiser for daily wear. Now I am testing Dim, which is a light bronzer. I lovr them all, and I previously did not wear powders much on my face. These are truly almost umdetectable to the normal eye.

I love Mood light for adding colour to my face. Its as you say a beautiful blush Im a NC20/25 warm and freckles. This looks great on me all over lightly as well

I have dim, etheral, mood, and diffused. I am a little darker than u. I use mood on contour areas over bronzer to soften the look. Like you, I also can use mood as a blush. I like to lightly put it over a blush. I either use dim, etheral, or diffused all over my face. Dim and diffused are my favorite. Great review!

Great information, love all you wrote in the description box. I have a small travel size of Dim Light and as you said, once you start it's hard to stop buying them. My travel size is getting low so I was just wondering what to get in addition to more Dim Light, so thank you for the great information!
Woman of a Certain Age you should get the full size instead of the travel, youre basically spending the money of half of a full size powder but only getting a tenth of the powder

I think they're all worth trying on darker skin tones but I'd definitely check them out in person if you can (or buy them from a place you can return them to if they don't work out). Radiant and Luminous would probably work the easiest but I think that Mood would look nice if it was applied lightly - that's the only one that I THINK might end up looking kind of ashy if you were too heavy handed with it.

Awesome review....Thank You. Okay, even though I have looked at them in person I was on the fence about what color to get. I'm Creole, with a strange olive complexion. Too much sun I look just like a green olive, Too little sun, I look like a sick cucumber. Go figure? However seeing the swatches, I think luminous light may be the way to go. You made them make sense to me. Dude you....ROCK!!!!

I think it depends on who your clients are and what type of makeup you're doing. I bought these for me because I don't do a ton of beauty makeup. I think you'd want at least four of them - you could probably skip the pale white and the more frosted of the three beige-y ones.

I bought Ethereal during Sephora's Sale and I love it! I use it to highlight the high planes of my face, and occasionally all over because I just adore the blurring effect! I think I'm going to get Diffused Light, Dim Light & Mood Light also. Thank you for the overview and swatches, my wallet hates you :p
Incredible review! I have 5 of them and wasn't really sure how to use them and sort of just played around with one or two and used them as highlights. I pulled them back out of the collection and am excited to play with them!
I bought this to replace my face powder a few months ago, so I could blot my face, apply powder throughout the day and continue on my merry way... Wasn't a fan. I didn't really get the appeal and (keeping in mind I have oily skin) I found that it didn't do anything for the wear of my foundation/ face makeup. I traded it in for Chanel Perfection lumier, and couldn't be happier. I might revisit these at some point, just cause the concept is so appealing :/
