    When bending aluminum you need to bend it 90 degrees from the grain (look at the sheet and you'll see the grain). When making multiple bends that are 90 degrees from each other, then the grain needs to be 45 degrees in relationship to the bends to prevent cracking of either bend. The radius of the bend needs to be kept in mind depending on the thickness of the aluminum (not too tight). Just FYI from an old aircraft mechanic!!

    Glad you switched that master cylinder. I would've worred with that other one that's why I said something. Normally we plumb them with the front brakes on the front port and rear brakes on the back port. Some master cylinders have proportioning valves built into the port for rear disk applications. I want to say those don't but might want to make sure. Keep hustling on it! Can't wait till you fire it up!

    You can anneal the aluminum by heating it with acetylene only to get it all sooted up and then go back with oxy/acetylene and burn the soot off.

    You can take the T6 temper out by heating with a blow torch and then quenching. Then the more you bend it, the more it will work harden again, so you can resoften it again the same way.

    2 things.. 1st.. Aluminum hates tight radius bends. When you retry it, make the corner fatter.
    2nd Taylor discovered running the main supply and returns before the engine and trans went in was best. There wasn't enough room to secure it was well as he'd like.

  • @justingadell
    @justingadell 4 года назад +1

    .063 T6 will bend easily actually. When cutting it look at the grain and the radius your using. Tight radius is always gonna be rougher BUT bend AGAINST the grain. You will have to watch how you cut/fab your piece. Something like what your designing you’d want the grain going across at an angle. They still came out nice looking regardless. Love the build and color choice

  • @ohNONOky
    @ohNONOky 4 года назад

    When bending aluminum, you have to bend against the grain otherwise it will snap as you found out. 5052 is slightly softer than 6061 but they are both aircraft grade aluminum so bending against the grain is the best way to bend without getting heat involved as someone else suggested.

  • @villelipponen923
    @villelipponen923 4 года назад +1

    I have more experience in machining and welding aluminum than bending it. But since you already used that punch & flare tool, and it went well. Maybe if you use the same radius in the bends that is in those flares, it wouldn't crack.

  • @ronkluwe4875
    @ronkluwe4875 4 года назад

    Bode - Did you check your brake system fittings to see if they require a single flare or double flare? It looks like you are only doing a single flare on your lines. This is very important as you have to match the flare to the fitting or the system will leak. Had the same issue as you with 6061 aluminum and had to anneal it every time I wanted to bend it. Annealing worked great and you can always re-anneal if you need multiple bends in the same area. I use a candle to soot the metal and then a MAP torch to anneal by just burning away the soot. Keep the soot layer thin so you get the correct annealing temperature. There is a fine line between annealing and melting with thin aluminum plate (ask me how I know). Keep up the good work.

    We all get caught out now and again with metal not doing what we want it to do, then we learn from our errors, I made the same error years ago and all my work mates at the time watched as it snapped clean off. They said you have to learn by your mistakes then showed me why. I also tried to use clear braided hose for fuel again mistakes were made. This is coming along in leaps and bounds but as Jay Leno says you can't do a real build in a week it takes time to get it right.

Plus I'm not sure aluminum is the best material to use on a floorboard as the repeated getting in and out will probably weaken the material. Just my opinion though take it as you will.
