I always wondered why the Chinese included the word "small" in their phonetic translation of Khrushchev. It think it was to kind of insult him during the sino-soviet split and to make him look less important and powerful in comparison to Stalin whose Chinese name has the word "big" in it.
Khrushchov is written as “赫魯曉夫”, according to Chinese transcription rules. I would brush it down to coincidence that “曉” and “小” are both read “xiao3”. But you may be right about Stalin, as there are two popular versions of his name in Chinese, “斯大林” and “史太林”. Nevertheless, the former (斯大林) is still more consistent with Chinese transcription standards, and I would credit the choice more to that.
The real chinese are not “small”, it is caused by poor nutrition, about 500 years. Rice and millet and sweet potatoes cannot give us nourishment. Westerners have today's body shape because they chose milk and potatoes.If the nutrition is adequate, we may need several generations to regain our original shape. And now we have only experienced one generation.
