It’s weird that some kpop fans say Ateez “make too many facial expressions” because all theyre used to is little smiles, smirks and winks on stage. But if you watch professional dancer’s stages (not idols) they also make just as many expressions which just comes naturally when you are a good performer. (Not saying idols who just smile on stage are bad it was just a comparison)
Hard to accept critic on people u luv cuz u see them as perfect and that's cool,its afterall ur choice,i thought they were amazing too when they debut cuz they are unique but d whole overdramatizing got old quickly and i got bored.I feel they do too much.I love their personality so i still check up on them though🤷🏾

Agree, idols are more expected to look pretty all the time on stage, not to make a lot of facial expressions. That's one of the reasons I loove ateez, they are enjoying themselves soo much on the stage and it looks like they are completely into performing their songs and they look really natural while performing.
I think it is a reflection of their training days, when they lived in Los Angeles for a brief time. Facial expressions and "living in the character" can definitely be found in American dance groups and performances.
That Halloween special of Wonderland is a need to view performance. They were all on it that night. Hongjoong was possessed, Seonghwa was hot for no reason & San needs to be taught the definition of "bones".
People that come for them and mock them for being over expressive are simply not used to seeing this kpop (especially when they debuted & in their rookie years). They have changed and till this day are still influencing what it means to be performer and immersing yourself into whatever concept the song is & in an industry, (specifically kpop) that favours the whole perfect face & beauty on stage, ateez defies all odds. it's why 3 years later HALA HALA is still being talked about 👀

But just because they don't mind looking like 'fairies' while performing, doesn't mean they are over dramatic. Also, anyone with eyes can tell when someone is being forced to and when it's natural. First than idols, they are artist.
I saw the performance video for Hala Hala back in 2019 and it was a wrap... this coming from someone who was brand spanking new to kpop at that time. I couldn't see their whole face but damn if I felt the energy and their eyes alone were just as intense. I've never seen it as over-expressing. It's delivering a stellar performance and actually getting into character. I grew up in the time where expression was expected and the norm, from any genre. When they performed, be it singer, musician, or dancer- it was with all of their being- face, body, & energy. So imo, to call it "too much" & "overdoing it" is like a slap in the face to the predecessors. ....Like come on, imagine The Icon MJ coming on stage and in his videos looking bland by the face...
thank you so much for reacting to this!!! i loved hearing how your background as a performer made you vibe more with demon line being demons onstage lmao. as i'm sure at least a few atinys might mention, hate comments toward ateez usually target how their facial expressions are "too much" and "overdone," so hearing you say that there's "no such thing" as that at the start was such a big sigh of relief for me lol. like you said, it's SO much more gratifying watching someone that loves what they're doing by the way that they're able to sink in and immerse themselves like that, even after the hours and hours of doing that same song in rehearsals and on stage. and maybe i'm totally biased in saying this, but it's that kind of factor that makes so i honestly have just as much fun watching more recent hala hala stages as i did watching stages from back then lol. and going off of what you said about your dance group, i've got no doubt that y'all must've been incredible to watch too!! so truly thank you so much for your reaction!! also, 100% agree on kz kandingan's performance quality too. she's a BEAST.
