    Andrew, if you invest in a 3D printer you can make all sorts of adapters to mount antennas in things where the standard SMA wont bolt on as well as making soooo many other things antenna related and for all sorts of other things!
    My Rc transmitter had a non removable antenna and an SMA socket would not bolt in the hole so i 3D printed an adapter for it.
    Im actually designing a mount right now as it goes, an aerodynamic mount to place an SMA socket the tail part of the fuselage on a Rc plane, it perfectly flits the curved shape of the tail body and its an elongated dome with the socket recessed so only the actual antenna is in the air stream

    Thank you Andrew, I recently bought the same camera but brand Citronics. I still haven't mounted because the same disappointment. You should show the other antenna that is not fake, never seen like that.

    Does the dual band ReoLink Trackmix camera have a fake antenna too? They both look identical to me.

    Cool =)
    Btw, should the 'PCB => SMA' coax be tuned to 1/2 wavelength of target frequency?

    Turns out that the model Hisseu outdoor camera that I have uses longer cables than you suggested. I need closer to 50cm, so now I'm trying to find those before I forget how the thing came apart. Not only that, but the cables don't seem to fit the antennas that you also suggested. I'm not sure what's going on there, but I'll figure it out.

      You often find this problem with Chinese products as they will just use what is cheapest for each production run

      @@andrewmcneil I’ll figure it out, but as I said, I’m more concerned that I’ll forget the tiny details how it goes back together before those parts get here. Also, it seemed that either (unfortunately I had an appointment and didn’t have time to tinker) that the thread pitch or the diameter of the cable didn’t match the SMA of the antenna. The ones that were included with the antenna were a breeze if they weren’t so short.

      @@andrewmcneil I haven't looked at it again, even after I returned home yesterday, but it might be possible for me to reroute the cable so I don't need more length than 30cm. I'll go down and look it over today. I'm having a hard time finding a cable as long as the factory one that came on the camera. I am surprised at how short these Amazon antennas are. But I did discover, since I'm about to enter the world of Meshtastic (I also bought better antennas for those that arrived the same day) that I was trying to connect the wrong antennas to these longer cables.

    Can you share a little more specific info about those 5dbi antennas and the connectors you used? I have 3 of these same cameras and they're okay, but do have issues, some of which may be built into the circuitry, such as the connection seemingly timing out after a couple of minutes. They also, due to signal strength don't react quickly enough to the pan inputs to change the direction of view. I'm sure that would be aided by a better signal. I was also curious, if you know, if that antenna chip can be replaced with a dual one. I know it would require soldering, but I'm not sure how it's set up to interact with the main board.

      Are you in the UK? I can post so links so you have an idea of what to search for. But no, you cannot change the chip to make it dual band.

      @@andrewmcneilStill not sure how I'll route the antenna lead, but I just received a pair of 8db gain antennas today. I don't have one of those TinySA devices, so can't verify the specs, but I'll just take it at their word for now. Now I'm waiting on a new pair of those same antenna leads I returned to Amazon in hopes that I can find a path that doesn't require the same OE one. Then hopefully I can put it back together without taking another one apart to see what goes where.

    I don't understand the appeal of such cameras with WiFi when they still need to be powered anyway. It makes sense to run a single UTP or STP cable with POE.

    • @TheWebstaff
      @TheWebstaff 10 месяцев назад +3

      People have more power sockets than network sockets.
      However I agree with you that running a network lead is so easy that it should be the preferred method.

      TPLink makes a dual band Access Point that will reach 600 feet. Using a directional antenna on a security cam will connect to the Access Point at that distance. You do have to use a battery pack and solar panel though on the cam. In my case the cams (2) are 450 feet from the AP.

    • @WYLMAS
      @WYLMAS 9 месяцев назад

      If you don't have to run power cable to them then WiFi does make sense. As long as you are running a cable it might as well be a LAN cable with POE.

      Perhaps if you had a wife that stomped her foot and mandated that no holes will be drilled through the walls, you'd more likely understand. I'd ordered a wired system that came with 8 wired cameras and a hub. She made me return it.
