Oh my god, that constructions site is 1-1? That's amazing. You see, THIS is how you know the people behind this movie actually cared, and they cared a lot.
And when they go down to the sewers, there's a sign labelled '1-2'.
I think some are even SMBZ fans
Well, Nintendo had a hand in it and they had creative control over everything.
At the very end of the construction zone, Mario slides down a pole like the flag pole at the end of the level. Right next to the pole is Castle Burger (or Burger Castle…I forget the exact name) and it is shaped like the castle at the end of the level.
I don’t want to be that guy but I think that’s the whole point of the movie, to do as many Mario references as possible, that’s why it was lacking in the story side. The movie was more for fun to watch than for story telling
The antique stores toad says "You have to blow on it." Most kids blew on their NES cartridges to get them to work. Loved that reference. That is probably the most/only humble joke Nintendo has ever made of their past hardware flaws.
Heh
I thought it was the flute from Mario 3 ngl
@@J.A.J.8947 Same here. I didn't actually see what the item was but heard the dialogue and assumed it was the Warp Flute.
I remember doing that to one of the Mario GBA games I had, as I got it secondhand, and my dad hadn't yet shown me how to use Dust Off.
I am austrian so I had to watch it in german and the way they dubbed it made it sound... like an adult joke😭
Don’t forget that Luigi’s ringtone is the GameCube startup! 😅
I KNOOOW!! Gamecube is life
Yep I noticed that
1:01 fun fact: this guy wasn’t actually their brother he turned out to be a scammer that wanted a share of their plumbing company
Haven't seen that episode, but I guessed right.
Good to know. I was pretty skeptical of that particular claim.
It's interesting how few saw this, but the yoshi egg was seen in the movie. During the wedding segment, it was one of the wedding gifts.
not only on the wedding. a yoshi egg, was in a glass shelf in the antique store as well.
@@Kenichi2002 oh shit, good eye

@@Kenichi2002 Holy crap it all adds up! the koopas snagged it before the wedding to use as a wedding gift, only for the big boom then you see it "dmged" at the end. YEP! And I think he did the voice of the guy playing the arcade game in the shop which allowed him to do the OG Mario voice. It was such a cool idea, him being the original voice of Mario is now the father of Mario!
@@AndrewBeavers-oj5gd Yeah that was Giuseppe
I did not realize that Mario and Luigi's uncle and father looked exactly like Ingo and Talon from oot. I really wonder if that was on purpose
One of the uncle looks like Weegee.
Nah just a coincidence 😎
Making them a referenception, as Ingo and Talon are both references of Mario and Luigi, and I think it's beautiful
Plot twist: The father actually was Talon and this is a tie-in to an upcoming Zelda movie.
I was totally seeing a Wario and Waluigi transformation happening in some future movie.
“Lack of diversity” means, “because they didn’t ask me to play Luigi. Waaaaa!” Mind you, this man was JUST in Violent Night that had only 2 diverse actors out of like 50 characters.
The new movie is actually more diverse than the original.
You got to be some special kind of insecure to need representation in a Mario movie

Another fact from the movie is during the kart customization scene, the offline menu theme from Mario kart 8/8 Deluxe plays. Also, the customization wheel is similar to the vehicle customization from said games
It’s cool they put Mario’s old character Jump-Man in the movie
Jack black wasn’t sure till they played him a short demo
The demo: “peaches peaches peaches peaches peaches!
Jack black: you had me at peaches damnit!
I guess the crew really liked the 1993 live action movie as well as the super show
I guess it's worth a reference or two.
True fans.
@@RoastCDuck How do you know? Not saying you're wrong, but what makes you think that?
I'm surprised that nobody is talking about this more - that the movie actually called it a blue shell! As you pointed out, Nintendo always called it officially a spiny shell, and Nintendo hates when fans give their stuff unofficial nicknames, which go mainstream (e.g. Wiimote). I'm almost surprised Nintendo allowed it!
Maybe the writers assumed it WAS offical and never realised it was far from the truth.
Bowser marrying Peach is also heavily influenced by Super Mario Adventures in 1992, the official Nintendo comic. This also showcased Peach as a kick-ass princess as well.
Finally someone talking about the comics I was waiting for at least someone to mention it.
Also in hindsight, in the anime as well! 🤩
Don't forget that in Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser straight up LIED to Bowser Jr. about Peach being his mother. Know what that means? Though he doesn't show it like in the movie and the Super Mario Adventures comic books (Which I have read before, which ALSO reveal that Bowser ADOPTED the seven koopalings, Larry, Morton, Wendy, Iggy, Roy, Lemmy and Ludwig, and wanted to get married to Peach so she can be a mother to them), Bowser in the Mario games is also obsessed over the princess, so much that he would lie to his own biological son about her.
The Super Mario Movie is from Japan too, and you don't consider it's portrayal of Peach "Japanese humor"? Hypocrisy at its finest, folks, and for the record, Peach in the movie isn't a spoiled brat, she is just as capable of defending herself as the version of herself in the Super Mario Adventures comic book which you were referring to, and Bowser in both the movie AND the comic LOVES her beauty and feisty attitude.

Another fun fact is that they play Mr. Blue Sky toward the end of the movie, which is played at the beginning of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2. The connection there being that Chris Pratt plays the lead role in both movies.
That really isn't a fun fact😊
Once those credits start rolling… imma clap and cheer the hell outta that.
@@johnfive2440Your existence isn’t a fun fact😊
Or ya know, they just wanted to play the song 🤦♂️
@@cheddarsunchipsyes8144 wow so funny 😒
The segment in the beginning where Mario and Luigi hit the question block reminded me of the opening of Super Mario Maker 2
The movie is basically super mario maker 2 + mariokart
Another thing about fact 2. Mario was playing the original Kid Icarus game. Hopefully it means a chance for a comeback because so many people loved Uprising
It's also a foreshadowing of Super Smash Bros.
This movie was entirely made for us the nerds the super Mario lovers the people who grew up with these games and I love it there's so many Easter eggs and callbacks it's beautiful
I'm just now realising something
The construction site scene at the beginning of the movie is 1-1
A sign saying 1-2 is seen in the sewers
1-3 contains Mushroom platforms, which Mario traverses in the next scene
And 1-4 is a castle, which Mario likely explored during the adventure montage
Well, 1-4 could easily be Peach's castle.
@@cbcsup3rg0d oh shit, maybe it's the obstacle course
2 things. 1 is at least as of Saturday when I went to see the movie the dude who wrote the DK rap WAS credited. I specifically was waiting for the music section so could count all the extra songs included. I had already forgotten about the DK rap and seeing it reminded me of it. His name was included. Idk why this is still being passed around...
2. Mario's father reminds me more of Captain Lue Albano who played Mario in the Super Show more then Talon
Okay but the moustache-into-sideburns with a bald head is exactly how Talon styles it and entirely not how Captain Lou Albano does it.
When I SAW IT, he wasn't.
When I saw it (twice, mind you), the DK Rap was credited as "from DK 64". If your claim is valid, then they fixed it AFTER the outrage and not in time for opening weekend
Just saw it today and he still wasn’t credited so idk.
When I saw it, he wasn't credited and I didn't know about the outrage I just thought it was weird that it just mentioned where it was from and not who wrote it.
John Leguizamo is just bitter that he wasn't invited back.
Yep. And that Charlie Day did a better job as Luigi than he did.
As a Latino myself, John Leguizamo is a clown. Like, it's Mario, who cares?
@@megaman37456
And he did it WITHOUT booze.
I hope Illumination gives us the names of the other family members (the dad, mom, kid in the pink hat, the grandpa, I'm pretty sure the three Uncles and the Aunt had confirmed names).
Aunt's name is Marie which was confirmed by someone at Illumination, I forgotten the uncles names
@@dantemustdie00 I did remember them mentioning that. Although I don't remember what she looks like...
I believe each of them are named in the credits proper, though I don't remember them exactly. I think the uncle voiced by John DiMaggio is named Arthur?
This is just a theory of mine, but I'm pretty sure the grandpa is the OG Jumpman from the Donkey Kong game.
Cranky Kong is included in this film, and Nintendo has confirmed he is the original Donkey Kong from all those years ago, so maybe the Grandpa is the Jumpman we saw from that game.
Once again, this is just a theory of mine, and I'm not sure as to how true it is. Could make for a nice Film Theory episode though!
@@JennyBlaze253 okay, that checks out, that's what a developer said.
There's a lot of corners of the Mario universe where Peach is forced to marry Bowser, I don't think it's a reference at all considering how many times it happened.
A fun fact that most people will notice if they watch the trailers and the movie: the scene at 2:55 , although it’s played in the trailers, was initially cut in the final film after Mario gets his face sucked by a fish. So we don’t get to see Peach and toad trying to help Mario get the fish off his face in the film, we just see the fish sucking on Mario’s face as the scene dissolves into a new scene.
Yeah I noticed that right away when watching the movie actually. Don't know why they removed it.
Really good Easter egg: the hole Mario and Luigi makes while they are down by the green pipe in the sewers, is a pixilated mario face.
I liked the movie. I have never been a Mario or Nintendo guy but this is how those types of movies should be.
The first castle Luigi goes in when running away looked like the castle from Mario RPG in the beginning with the Chandeliers fighting Bowser.
Correction: M&L Father's design is actually a 1:1 recreation of a scrapped design of the hypothetical father M&L would've had, should they ever appear in the games. I believe it was either by Shigeru Miyamoto, or someone else who had a big contribution to Mario.
2:00 Yeah, a lack of diversity in a voice cast that includes three VAs of color (Key, Richardson and Payton), two Jewish VAs (Black and Rogen) and one Latina VA (Taylor Joy). TRULY a cast that lacks diversity...
DISINCLUDED 😤
Luigi is Italian... not Latino... further, these are voice actors. It's a little more difficult to recognize ethnicities in voices... so I think there's more correct source material and diversity in this new Mario movie due to Luigi's voice actor exhibiting flairs of an Italian Brooklyn accent. Leguizamo racialized the character, and didn't respect the diversity of the source material.
He's just mad that his Mario movie bombed
wait jack black is jewish?
Imagine talking about diversity while the main character of the story are Italian-american plumbers made by some Japanese 😅
Mario was also playing " Kid Icarus," and when he fell down, the main drain if you look on the walls, was 1-1, 1-2.
You missed one easter egg, at the start of the movie the toads tell Mario and the other toad that the princess is in a different castle which is a resemblance to the first New Super Mario Bros when you defeat bowser, and the toad says the princess is in another castle.
i guess it was obvious enough, but yeah, amazing reference
That's not a reference to that. That was a reference to the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES, where every castle except 8-4, after you defeat the fake Bowsers, Toad says that line. The line from New Super Mario Bros. is in itself a reference to that line from the NES game.
I knew the toads in that game were being smarmy bastards lol.
Also the song played Peaches training "Holding out for a Hero" is from the Footloose soundtrack and Chris Pratt in the MCU asked Spider-Man if Footloose was still the #1 movie of all time.
(Not to mention I played that song myself a ton of times playing SMB1 just because it went to well with the game's pace in 1987...) felt like I had something to do with it or someone else did something similar! Plus... Footloose.
I was sad to not hear Charles Martinet in the movie since I was watching in german, but when you said he voiced Giuseppe, I remembered that it really sounded like him. I just did not expect it to be him, he spoke very fluently. Really impressive 😮
And thanks for those infos!
The guy who created the DK rap has a fair point tho 😂
The accents at the beginning of the movie was very impressive honestly
My friends and I had fun spotting all the Kongs, and that was fun. Although if Cranky Kong said DK was his son, that would mean it was DK Jr that was fighting, because the current DK, is Cranky's grandson. That would also explain the missing youngest Kongs like Tiny and Kiddy. Although that would also mean Diddy is older than DK the 3rd? I liked seeing Funky Kong, even if it was brief.
Post credits scene smells like the sequel (if it exists someday) is gonna be inspired by super mario world.
Koopalings!
@@LagoonKnight I really hope so, hopefully we can also get the NCU as well, just do it right and don't make the movies like the MCU where you HAVE to watch other movies to get whats going on. I remember being confused when I watch Thor: Ragnorak and had no idea why Hulk was there, didn't figure it out until I watched Age of Ultron
0:54 It's not a first, the Mario Super Show had MANY more relatives, including the mom, cousins, various uncles, the fake third brother, a niece, the ghost of grand ma...
2:08 I don't think Anya Taylor-Joy is considered "Latin American" by our standards, just notice her name. She wasn't even born there (she was born in Florida), Anya just lived in CABA for a very short period of time.
Even by CABA (Buenos Aires) standards she is surely seen as a foreigner and a also a privileged girl. Also, she learned English at a very very young age, such thing is very uncommon in Argentina. Let's also remember that she began acting at 16 and has a very light Argentinean accent.
At the end of the day, her dad's is British and her mom too, not a very pleasant nationality in Argentina and they both are ethically British not just their name...
I don't get why Peach had to be "diverse", anyways, but to use this actress as an example is a very weak argument to say the least! She's just Anglo and Peach is an Anglo princess.
it's a nod to Odyssey, which is why Bowser has his top hat.
Since we all know there will be a Mario 2. It will either need to be Luigi’s mansion or wario and waluigi need to be villains.
I thought Mario & Luigi’s uncle looked more like Weegee from the Mario Is Missing PC port.
Woah, No way, Uncle Tony was played by f***ing Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon! Which is funny because Tracey Moore who played the first English speaking Sailor Moon was the second Princess Peach in the animated series.
The green yoshi was actually one of the first running yoshi to the furthest right.
3:15 There's also the Super Mario Adventures comic, but that has Kamek hypnotizing her.
1:53 That’s fine. I refuse to watch his movie because I don’t want cancer. 😂
I got chills seeing the first level of Super Mario 64 during their travel montage
Leguizamo was in the 90s version of Super Mario?! He shouldn't say shit about this movie ... his version bombed in the box office and over all sucked lol😂
Mario and Luigi are so cute without their hats
Luigi's ringtone is the GameCube intro when you start the console up.
The sequence with Toad leading Mario to the castle includes some features from Captain Toad.
I also thought that the "Superstar" references the winner of Mario Party which makes sense since there is a Mario party where Bowser is a playable character. I always thought the stars were called Starmen or Power Stars so I'm not sure where else superstar comes from.
And finally, DK is shown throwing barrels at Mario while standing on the same red metal platforms that looks just like in the NES game.
Green yoshi conspicuously absent when they showed the others in the trailers? That yoshi scene you showed of them all running, I was able to find 2 green yosh near a red one in the shade.
Let's be real, John doesn't hate the movie for lack of diversity, he hates the movie because he didn't get cast as Luigi.
EDIT: Forgot to add: Surprised Giuseppe didn't make an appearance.
yeah, he's pretty stupid for that.
2:43 ?

I dont think Bowser forcing Peach to marry him isnt refernce to the Super Show episode, but is likely based on the anime Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! which was a few years BEFORE the episode aired.
Also the opening of the movie is mainly based on their sprites from Super Mario Maker.
ANd another note that NOBODY didnt even noticed is when Peach was about to select the bike she wanted a quick second showed a A button was seen which is a HUGE reference to the classic Nintendo button A button and also for Mario Kart 8 when when you picked the customed kart you wanted too.
There are also games like super paper mario that peach is forced to marry bowser and bowser just goes along with it and odyssey where the entire game has bowser getting stuff for the wedding with peach
Why has no one that I have seen brought that up
I see no one also bringing up the newest game Super Mario Odyssey! Bowser was trying to marry Peach in that game!
@@Nelsito99 I stand corrected! Yeah the final level in Odyssey was fighting bowser at his wedding lol!
And in the comic book series, Super Mario Adventures, that exact same subplot happens.

and if I recall this dude ended up not actually being a long lost brother.
Man, Leguizamo always embarrasses himself haha
I think you missed the real refence with Mario and Luigi's Dad and Uncle. They resemble Captain Lou and Danny Wells pretty well if they were animated.
I love how nintendo even made sure to pay attention to parts of their own cannon that nobody else really cares about like the first mario movie. It shows dedication.
Luigi's ringtone is the Gamecube start up sound
These eatser eggs make me respect the people who worked on it even more

I spotted Yoshi's in the 3D movie. But never seen it in it. So I am sure it may be in the part 2 series. The movie was great and Bowser was really funny guy. Even at the end was sooooo funnny!!
"But it could also be a nod to Super Mario Odyssey!"
Seeing as Bowser's wedding suit is straight from the game, and I believe the piranha plant bouquet is as well, I don't know why this was presented as a "maybe."
My favorite Easter egg/ hidden secret is when bowser is playing the piano in his lair… if you look closely when it zooms in on the piano you can see it says Ludwig Von Koopa
I wish I could have worked on that film. I have not seen it yet. One of my former classmates animated on it. I actually grew up with the original Mario on Nintendo and Super Nintendo in the 1990s when I was a kid.
I don’t know why I thought this during the movie but I thought Spike would somehow be Wario. But I guess not.
John Luigiziamo is just mad that this movie is doing WAY better than the 1993 film

In Mario Kart 8 between races you see a lot of ads and one of them is for “Burning Donkey Kong.” So it’s funny that he gets the fire flower power up in the film
Give the dude who compose the DK rap credit in the movie for having compose the original music even if it’s a remix
"Peach being forced to marry bowser is similar to the Super Mario Bros Super Show or to Super Mario Odyssey"
This is blatant Super Paper Mario erasure.
Ah yes
The game that Luigi dies and is sacrificed to become god
A fact left out was the song from Mario's plumbing ad was the ending song from outro Mario super show. Pretty much the intro with slight difference. Outro "unlike all the others we don't get all the fame" intro "found a secret portal unclogging a drain"
in the beginning of the movie, when luigi and Mario are making shocked faces in the advertisement. the face luigi makes is the same face from luigi's mansion
Luigi's ringtone was the Game Cube start up tune. In the final battle against King Koopa you can see a store called Disk Kun; Disk Kun was the mascot of the Family Disk System. When their van gets busted, you can see a travel agency called Shine with some dolphins, a reference to Super Mario Sunshine. When Mario says that the white gloves are for standing out itnis a reference to Shigeru Miyamoto saying tnat they gave white gloves to Jumpman in order to distinguish his hands from his face. In the news report about the flooding Pauline is being interviewed. Also, when Mario returns to Brooklyn you can see a store with one of ther guys from Ballon Fight.
The piano Bowser used belongs to Ludwig Von Koopa.
I don’t know if others saw this but I did, around the end of the movie (or at the start, I only saw it at the end) when you can see the outside of the place where they were at the start with spike, its actually called “punch out pizza”, obviously a reference to the Punch Out game
My son’s favorite Easter egg was the piano Bowser was playing said Ludwig Von Koopa in reference to one of the koopalings.
Luigi's phone ringtone in the movie is the GameCube start up chime!
Don't know if this was obvious but Spike is a reference to the game Wreaking Crew and was the Mario bro's employer
You forgot that Luigi’s ringtone is the GameCube startup music and the image of the unknown caller is a Mii and when they crash through the brick wall in the sewer it’s in the shape of pixel Mario’s head
I love how we saw all these new characters we never saw in the Mario games like blue shell
0:45 Just that? Not the ENTIRE FINAL BATTLE? Mario crashing both Bowser's wedding and castle, him giving a run of his life while desperately reaching the super star, finally gets it with the help of Luigi, taking a stomp from Bowser like a champ and then tossing him in the air by his tail, way before SM64 made it "gay"?
Let's not forget about Spike, from Wrecking Crew. Also we see a group of Yoshi's running and Mario eating the apples that they eat in Super Mario World.
They use the line "It's on like Donkey Kong" which Stiffler uses in American Wedding.
Maybe Uncle Tony's name could also be a nod to the late Tony Rosato, who played Luigi on The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 and the Super Mario World cartoon.
If you look closely to the wall Mario and luigi crash through underground - the shape of the hole is the exact same shape as the Mario’s head in 8-bit
the thumbnail cracked me up lmfao
3:00 - You can add Flemish to that list as well.
3:30 the irony of talking about Grant not getting credit and not crediting FamilyJules video...
I hope they make a smash brothers movie eventually and they can use all the bosses in the NES crew to go against the hero’s! King K Rool, Koopa, Andross, Ganandorf, King Dee Dee etc
They did say there are many galaxies, all these things could be like an MCU thing, having a big combination in a smash movie. It would not be terribly hard to do and yet keep things separate enough to not confuse people who don't catch all of them and just drop them all into smash. Maybe they could even talk to Sega and get a Sonic cameo since his movies are also doing pretty well.
2:04 he’s upset that there wasn’t enough Luigi fan service
2:47 that's supposed to be jumpman
Uncle Tony looks familiar, reminds me a bit of Jimmy from Warioware
Missed a jump man arcade game when Mario runs in the pizza shop before the final fight with bowser
Whilst a lot of people don't like the choice of music used in the movie, there is 1 song that I've given a free pass to; Take On Me by a-ha.
Why? That's because it was #1 in the charts in the US when the NES was released to the test market in America (October 18th 1985)!
I hope in the second movie they have Mario in another racing scene and he uses a mushroom to escape the blue shell last minute , always felt like neo when I was able to pull it off in Mario kart
I was so surprised to hear the Dk rap in the movie I loved it
