    Had the exact same thing with starting. We had to push start our T2 and/or jumpstart it on the solenoid for years. Tried everything, change ingnition, larger batteries , redid a lot of wiring. In the end all it was was 1 wire going from ignition to solenoid which was giving voltage but was so worn out that it didn't give amps enough to kick the solenoid. As mentioned bij
    Deano Wilson below, making a seperate circuit with a relay solved everything. First we made a seperate circuit without a relay, just adding a push button in the engine bay to start (which meant you could only start the bus from there). Then found a shop which sold relays and made it so that you could start with the ignition key again. Haven't had any issues since then.

    Hey Ben, I saw someone recommended bump starting in 2nd rather than 1st and I can say it's definitely easier in 2nd. I think I had the exact same problem with my beetle that I had before my bay window - the solenoid stopped working correctly with the current from the battery, but when I tried a jump start it actually still worked. You should try a jump start with cables when someone offers because jump starting still worked for my old beetle as it drove just a bit extra current to the solenoid and starter, saving me the embarrassment of push starting in crowded places! I have a portable jump starter battery pack from halfords (about £60) that I used to jump start the beetle when the starter solenoid was out, and it started it about 70 times before needing a recharge, can't recommend them enough for aircooled vw life.

    OMG! Flashback! When I was stationed in Germany (1975), we had this 1964 VW Bug. Solenoid problem. Husband took a class to get it fixed (couldn't take it to the free auto shop on base which had mechanics, would've been to easy). I was pregnant with my first child, on maternity leave and past my due date.
    Stayed at a friend's house when he was working midnight shift, just in case. In the morning we went out to the VW (someone I worked with's wife) and it wouldn't start. So, I was HUGE. I was so upset my husband hadn't had the problem fixed (he fixed it when we sold the car!) I'd forgotten I carefully had put two raw eggs in the pocket of my jacket for his breakfast. Put on the jacket and crawled under. Had the baby, and two months later grabbed the jacket off the hanger to wear it. Raw egg dried and broken up shells (we decided to eat breakfast at the mess hall). To this day, I don't understand how that didn't smell.
    We went all over Europe in that VW. Tapping the solenoid the whole way. 🤣
    I was in York, England when this hit. Luckily, I got out on a American sponsored flight after 14 days of quarantine. Went to Atlanta. Then it hit there and I packed up and came home to Montana. I really want to hit the road again. Doesn't look like it will be anytime soon. Bless you both, your families and Happy Holidays!

  • @whitevanadventures4116
    @whitevanadventures4116 4 года назад +6

    I had this problem with my type 2. The starter is fine, the problem is the solenoid, or perhaps a voltage drop on the long wires which lead to it from the ignition switch. Check all the connections. If it is the solenoid I think you can replace it without the starter motor.

    • @dealeru.3532
      @dealeru.3532 4 года назад

      Specifically the high current contacts inside the solenoid have carbon built up on them. It's an easy fix to take apart and clean the contacts especially if you can just remove the end of the solenoid without removing the whole starter solenoid unit.

    never bump start in first gear, it creates a severe sudden braking reaction and if the engine dont fire up on first turn of the engine then you need to push again and that applies to a run start on a hill - use second or usually best third gear.

    When you finally get to order up a starter, buy three. That way you gotta replacement starter on deck WHEN the next one fails. Because, we're talking VW here and those starters just aren't reliable. My friend always had an extra new starter on board in his VW bus and we swapped starters in multiple parking lots.
    That starter isn't that old and really shouldn't be failing already... But it's VW so it's kind of expected. For example, my 1989 Chevy G20 van has the original starter in it and it's still going.

    Stay off the stupid Auto Stradas, the Toll express ways in france,, the Autobahn in Austria and pay NO TOLL! So get a new starter solenoid and /or startermotor brushes dude!
    2 weeks isolation in Jersey is a great time to remove the startermotor, take off the solenoid and check out the Motorbrushes for lenght!

    Funny thing: I am Italian and I live in Wellington New Zealand. I restored a 1999 Suzuki Jimny which I used to go on holiday with my girlfriend to the Coromandel Peninsula. After refilling the tank at the Petrol Station in "Thames" the 31st of January the starter gave up.. the only thing I didn't replace in my engine .. long story short we push-started the car only 2 days, which with a light car like a Jimny is not a big deal but last day I drove from Whitianga to Wellington turning the engine off only once :) 645km.

    Believe me, years of experience..with a VW bay you carry a spare starter motor, either a spare distributor at least the electronics, a coil, an alternator rectifier, a fuel pump, a clutch cable and a throttle cable. It all fits in a round cake tin sealed with tape. Mine lives in the spare wheel.
    I appreciate you have a rinky dink engine with injection, but surely the starter is one of only 2 sizes available for short and long bellhousings.
    With 2 wires to the solenoid and a 3 position switch in the engine bay, you can immobilise, run or start..no hammer required..
    You will need to check also your gearbox earth strap, and the oilite starter bearing in the gearbox bell housing..just saying..
    Roll on the New Year and new adventures..
    Cordialement,

    My mom is 1005 italian and my dad is a British mutt. . . Used to have Pesto sauce made with cold-pressed olive oil and basil picked off of the shrub in the herb garden. The only thing we couldn't get local was the pine nuts, which my grandma bought from a local Italian grocery. . .Have not seen those Pine Nuts any more. That was the nineties and the grocery is long gone now.

    As a temporary solution of the starter, install a push button switch. One lead from the small connector of the starter motor up to the switch inside the cabin, the other lead from the switch to a + 12 volt source.

    One time I had 1 of 2 starter bolts break on my mid-90’s GMC 3/4ton truck, and for a while I had to lay on my back underneath my engine and put the missing one in to start it, then go back underneath to get the broken bolt that had fallen out again. Wasn’t the worst thing to do in the summer, not so much in the rain though. I’m just glad I got it fixed long before winter hit, would not want to do that in a Canadian winter.

    Why didn't you just order a Starter when it started playing up from a supplier in the UK and get it shipped to you, they ship anywhere in the world.

      Looks like something he may have been able to fix himself by unbolting and cleaning up the contacts. Nevertheless it's over now. The French mechanic said "no good" because the underside of the car isn't a great place for electrical connections, too much water and grime gets in there but he could probably have fixed it for him. There should be a panel made to protect all that and silicone sealant sprayed on it to keep it waterproof. Auto stores have the stuff. I have an old can in my shed.

      The issue wasn't the starter, it was a missing ground strap and cracked solenoid

    Engine Starter:
    If THAT´s your problem, like mentioned in the vid, that you jump with a screw driver your starter, THEN you SELENOID ist defekt.
    That is GOOD NEWS! You van jump that thing with a simple switch!. Either vie a relais, than switch or a heawy duty switch with somewhere like min 10 Amps.
    Connect it to constant power to one side of the starter. [like you do when putting a screw driver/hammer to it.]
    I do have a similar problem and made that "part time solution". Works still, since 4 years and 5.000 km or so.

    Love Alaska! From 1976-1978, I drove a 1952 Ford truck with a 6V battery. I usually had to roll start it, so I always parked on a hill If possible. I tested and replaced pretty much everything to no avail. The tons of bad advice I got made it worse. You're a much better mechanic than I, so I'm sure you'll be OK in no time! Sorry you're apart, but I try to have a Happy Solstice!

    Thanks for this season guys, it’s been brilliant. Like you say, you’ve squeezed as much out of this goddam awful 2020 as you could and for those of us stuck largely at home it’s been great therapy. You really should watch the movie Little Miss Sunshine over the holidays if you haven’t seen it. You were pretty much acting out the movie in this vid. Take care, have a fantastic Christmas (well as much as you can) and see ya down the road....whenever...

    There are VW parts suppliers all over Germany. It is a vw bug starter, even junk yards can help you. But if you can short the solenoid at starter and it is able to turn over the engine that means the starter is fine. Then it is an electrical issue with the starter switch or the wires going to the starter.
