"So I Married an Axe Murderer" is still an overlooked underrated, hilarious and fun comedy movie with Mike Myers that is just funny & charming as Austin Powers & Wayne's World
It's a pity that "The Cat in the Hat" and "The Love Guru" wrecked most of his career. He brought a sense of zany charm and humour to most of his roles.
I watched Austin Powers so much as a child, and I enjoyed it every time without even knowing it was a spoof of James Bond movies (which I didn't see any of until during college). I actually have a hard time watching James Bond movies, because Austin Powers seems so much better to me. I love it even more now that I know it was a tribute to his dad.
I know!! I watched it so much as a kid too!! Plus my daddy could say yeah baby just like Austin Powers!! Omg I loved it!! But sadly he’s not here anymore so I can’t get him to go yeah baby!! anymore.
@@zaicol850 I'm not 100% on the details, but I think there was some conflict between Jack Black and one of his bandmates, who was in favour of Donald Trump. I only hope it doesn't result in the world hating Jack Black since he's a great actor, and it would be unfair to go from loving to hating him in such a short space of time.
@@deadeyedmillennialmedia I'm not denying that, he was huge. But when you treat everyone around like they're less, and put yourself on a pedestal, people won't care how good your comedy is...
2:32 Funny you mention Jim Carrey, because originallly, Mike Myers actually wanted him to play Dr. Evil; however, Carrey was unable to because he was recording _Liar Liar_ at the time.
I remember like it was yesterday when the first Austin Powers released I was in high school and everyone in my school was quoting it, it became an everyday quotable movie in which we could use in and out of school to the point the teachers and parents got sick of it, it still very quotable and I think it's one of the funniest franchises ever with great nods to the older Bond films.
I have to admit, after rewatching Austin Powers a few weeks back most of Austin's joke didn't land for me as they did 20 years ago. But Dr.Evil is just "chef's kiss". As perfect and genius as the day he was written.
If Austin Powers was made today, he would have been frozen in 1993. We're almost as far away from the time of the release of the movie as the character is from his time.
This is similar to GTA Vice City, a video game which took place in 1986 but was released in 2002, a 16 year time gap. Whereas 2002 to 2023 is a 21 year time gap. Also reminds me of Garfield Gets a Life, released in 1991 which showed Jon doing disco moves but everyone gets mad at him, and he complains how within just 14 years disco was phased out but now we're decades past that.
Mike Myers creates his own characters from within. That's why. Can you imagine another Wayne Cambell? No, because there isn't one. It isn't James Bond.
Me and my father love the Austin Powers movies, I never knew they were a tribute to Eric Myers, but it makes sense looking back at them because they were the movies that it felt like we were more together watching them then other movies.
Couldn't have been DVDs. VHS was still big in '97 and '98. DVDs only came out in the US in 97. DVD sales didn't overtake VHS until 2001. That's the overall market, I couldn't find data specifically for Austin Powers' home video sales.
The Austin Powers movies are easily my favorite comedy movies ever. I remember when the bluray copies I ordered got delivered they had an odd perfume smell on them that made me think that's what Austin would smell like LOL. My guess it was really just from the delivery driver...
I think so... How do you watch the movies and not realize they're the same person? They do nothing to hide it besides the actor wearing a skull cap as Dr. Evil.
Freaks me out that there's been nearly the same amount of time since the first Austin Powers movie to now as there had been from 1967 until it came out.
Hard to convey how popular Austin Powers was in my age group at the time. My entire school quoted lines.. to the point we still say some of it without even knowing where it came from...
My took my mom to go see this in theaters. They walked out. He later bought a copy of the VHS that i still have, and watched so much it's completely worn out.
* sigh * Pa-lease. He is Eddy Murphey after Eddie was not making many great films anymore, and, skipping over some others, you have Peter Sellers before that. There will be another, none of them are replaceable, but also, they are, as they have been and likely will be.
While I absolutely love Austin Powers... all 3... and I mean LOVE these movies... his best movie will always be So I Married An Axe Murderer... it's the funniest, zaniest, and wackiest, while also being heartfelt and beautifully acted by the amazingly talented cast...💙
Small correction: Robin William was already a pretty big star before Mrs doubtfire. Huge standup draw, also a hit tv series. And both a critical movie hit (garp) and huge commercial hit in movies (good morning vietnam) before doubtfire.
It makes me sad because he is one of my all time favorite actors and I wish he got better roles more often. Then again maybe he turns them down and we just don’t know about it.
I love these movies, but the entrance in the 3rd movie including Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacy, Danny Devito and others was simply amazing.
If anything is a testament to the austin power series is that all of their films are far more timeless and rewatchable than a majority of the 007 films they were parodying
I was 8 when goldmember was released, that movie made me laugh so much as a kid and even more as an adult now that I understand more of the dirty humor 😂
He was the best in those roles in that moment in time. But time goes on. Peter Sellers was like Myers, but it didn't stop Myers from creating. Hard to believe that Sellers wasn't mentioned in this, with his parodies and playing multiple characters.

Austin Powers is based on 1960's nostalgia like how Back to the Future and Grease are based on 1950's nostalgia, Stranger Things on 1980's nostalgia, Etc.

With how society is these days they wouldn't get away with films like Austin powers these days.

Cat in the hat is a masterpiece
Yeah cat in the hat is unreal
Fun fact: The main character in The Love Guru was originally planned to appear in the second Austin Powers film, but was ultimately scrapped.
Thanks for reminding me of the existence of The Love Guru. SMH.
