Growing up, my dad travelled a lot. If my brother and I cut and trimmed the grass, he would take us to Sandusky Speedway to watch the supermodifieds. We had the best trimmed lawn on the whole street!
These cars are sick ! ISMA has made runs at Oxford Plains a few times and after a race in victory lane, I asked winner Mark Samut just how fast he was going when entering turns 1 and 3 on this weird shaped oval and he said 137mph and that's on a 3/8ths mile semi banked low grip momentum track! My jaw dropped. Bentley Warren came out of retirement to run that peticular race if I recall around 2013. These cars are just crazy fast.
One year at Thompson they put a radar gun on them in the heat races… 176 mph down the backstretch. Avg at Bristol- 144. It’s insane My favorite moment with them was at Lee USA in 1995 for their “top dog invitational.” It was just a regular Friday night show but during Cup weekend at Loudon. After qualifying heats for all the divisions they interviewed the cup drivers on hand- Rusty Wallace, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, and Sterling Marlin among others. They asked Sterling what he thought and he responded “this is a great little racetrack, so fun!! One thing though (turns and points to the infield where the 16 or so supers were pitted) I WANT TO GET IN ONE OF THOSE, THEY ARE SO COOL!!” We all got a chuckle.
God, I still see these guys a fair amount now in 2016, and they've got to be the only racing series that hasn't changed a bit. ISMA is without a doubt in my mind the best kept secret in racing, and I'm a Formula 1 fan.
1) They're faster now, but modern asphalt sprint cars are faster yet. Both types have turned laps at well over 140 at Bristol, TN (look for that on RUclips). 2) Ben Warren won championships and major races in these cars from the 1960s to the 2000s & probably would have won more had he not gone off to race IndyCars for a while. And he =did= know G. Bush 41.
Anybody have the race from '95 on youtube? This is fantiastic! I was just at IRP last week for the Midwest Supermod Series race. Pole speed was 18.3 seconds!
possibly the coolest racing video on you tube. a 12 lap exhibition with a photo finish that not even most Saturday Night Thunder fans remember. Did I mention the photo finish? lol

This race is still bananas after 30 years.

they make my hair stand up, just the sound of them.
As a native NY'er now in Florida, Oswego and the Supermodifieds are the #1 thing I miss about NY... #2? Big Block Modifieds.
Grew up watching these guys at their home track in Oswego nothing better than the isma boys
I love videos like this!
I remember when I saw the "live broadcast" of this when espn used to have the Thursday night thunder shows
