    Great points at 31:00 and following about hitting with power, blasting through. And fist relaxation, clenching as you punch through the target. Even at short distance of 6-12” you can generate a lot of power by starting relaxed, shooting the hand forwards, and clenching as you punch, and then if you add weight shift, hip turn it boosts it more. I love watching clips of Bruce Lee doing that, loose,... then BAM!

    I really liked your thoughts on the form and seeing concepts and application so clearly and explaining it very well.
    It was a great mental exercise to learn from you and you are a good teacher.
    You can prevent someone from following the line and getting under and through a tan sau by keeping your elbow in, but if you do that tan it has even worse rotator cuff weakness issues so you have to know what you are defending.
    And I think you can use a bong lap bong tan lap type of defense against a hook only because of the next hand ... The bong slows it down a milisecond to get the other hand on the other side of it and it's a sideways block.
    I saw evandeer holyfield block tysons punch with an outward firearm block once.
    But that is really hard. For hook punches if it's a long looping hook I'll gate block it if I'm stronger but I see how that's risky.
    Up close I do still gate block but often I use the boxers helmet block.
    It's best to use your forward energy.
    That's why you are doing that is because it's correct.
    Does it work best ... That's the most functional idea is to move forward.
    forward pushing energy with structure and backward pulling energy as a lot of strength and is extremely that's like one of the most tactical things.

    I like your interpretation of different hands. I have seen Wong Shon Leung lineage differ from Ton-Sau from Duncan Leung. I disagree with your statement about the Ton-Sau against the hook. If you use a Ton-Sau in a whipping motion, shift or step in the direction of the attack; the Motion of the Ton-Sau will not only attack the hook; but will cause immense pain. As you shift or step; the opposite hand punches or palms his center mass. Wing Chun has more than one center of attack; once you shift you create multiple centers. I have used this several times in training, against different schools, and in the bars. Otherwise, interesting video.

    I like that you understood so many different groups or traditions of Wing Chun I agree with your thoughts on gate blocking low knives and weapons and that you won't see them in time I've seen them in time I've been attacked with weapons but it's true sometimes you won't see them. I also agree that you can defend an overextended taanvsau that's the best I can do I'm in the middle of stuff by bringing your arm back with a lower elbow with a jut and I think it's good to identify earlyI don't know everything right so you know who knows but I think it's good to identify early if you should keep your elbow in when you use your sky Palm. I really like Bruce Lee I like that you mentioned flexible thinking and being practical in a real situation ... I've seen your other videos some of them and I like your ideas on the intercepting fist I don't think that that is something that is only g kundo I think that is both Wing Chun in-gee kundo so voice text is failing very badly I think I'm going to get off. keep up the good work and there's a lot of things that I agree with you it I still don't think that it is impossible to block a hook with a bong but I think that if you do that the key is to be on the outside of the hookand to use your other hand you're going to need your other hand to block it so you want to be on the outside and in front of the hook when you block it and the bong is just slowing it down and putting it in a place where your other hand can get to it whereas if you just tried to use a cross sky Palm I guess that could work I don't know it's hard to get that timing right and it's hard to get that strength in your frame right in time to deal with that type of attack. Some people want to point out that cross blocks are always wrong or mistakes yeah just that I have awarenessand I understand that but there are so many times when I believe that you need a cross-block for many many reasons one example is you've only got one arm left and you're about to be hit another example would be you're dealing with a knife or something like that and you need to block on the same side twice and you don't want to use the same arm you're going to switch arms ... Unfortunately I was attacked with a knife before and I saw it ahead of time. just keep coming through relevant I think that pretty much all Kung Fu at least the way I feel I feel like all Kung Fu should involve Jeep commando I hope voice text gets that right Shaolin and Wing Chun those are all great types of kung fu and the rest of the types really help support those styles I don't know if you can use those other styles on their own very well but it's a shame a very functional practical styleKung Fu which is great for self-defense and is great for sport it's too bad that people don't like it now I think that is a terribledirections for society to go because it's sew creative it has so many answers for people some of them they don't need some of them they need but it's just so exhaustive it's got so much in it it's just a shame to see people not like it and it's also true that people don't need more answers they need to keep be better at what they already do but I think it's good to have that understanding ... Maybe understanding and different answers might be different concepts i don't know. Good job. Just good job. Nice. Entertaining. I enjoy Kung Fu.
    I'm in Kentucky or I'd stop by.

      Davis Barr ; tan sau punch is used to block hooks and attack at the same time, if you step in you can fire your block at their bicep which stops them dead and can incapacitate the arm. Try in training with someone gentle. It depends on the maturity of the strike or it's distance but if someone cocks their arm back they will be in trouble if they throw as you come in. Ouchee!

      No. It’s just that there are variations in the applications of the principle and structure. What we try and show is that the structural foundation and principles are key and people should be free to improvise from them. That keeps us from the errors of tyranny (hyper-traditionalism…don’t change a thing, just mindlessly conform) and anarchy (everyone does whatever they feel like, regardless of whether or not the foundation is compromised).
      Great question. Thanks for asking, and for watching.

    Western boxing shifts position every now and then. But I can understand your point of adding something to the technique thereby giving you an increased chance of winning the fight. The original wing chun does not shift position like western boxing. We do shift yes but not too wide. We use side stepping and pivoting.

    Thanks for making your videos, their great. However when you show an application of a form, have the attacker come at you full speed. A Western Boxers jab for instance, isn't just going to "hang out there". If the attacker is attacking you slowly, respond slowly (in any given demonstration). How does Sil Lum Tao apply to a constantly moving, bobbing and weaving, hard jabbing and even hared crossing opponent? Too many YT instructors do this: they show a fast response to a slow attack. How does wing chun deal with take downs. I mean what do you do if you are taken down? I am not trying to trip you up. I am really curious. I ask because I had a fight with a guy I to wrestling and I was screwed. I am not a martial artist but I am good in a fight for whatever reason, but on the ground I am beat.

    • @jchien

      Diederik De Vries i understood u need live instructions and interaction to learn a martial art properly, if that's ur point. I agree.
      FYI, I am studying wing chun with a coach but find it beneficial watching other instructors' explanation/interpretation, preferably based on real fighting experience. Wing Chun is a theory heavy system but the majority of chunners dare i say even some instructors don't have any real fighting experience. I find Sifu Jason's explanation thought provoking, helping me better understand when and how to apply the techniques I've learned in class. For example, gan sao. My coach first explained u can block a body hook or a kick with it. My previous karate competition experience taught me u cannot block a kick with a downward hand block (i broke my wrist) and my boxing experience taught me a body hook may be too powerful and the extended hand block leaves u way too open. Sifu Jason's point on using gan sao to prevent a possible knife attack in a street situation rings true and shows much experience and thought behind his presentation. Anyways, happy training.

    This sifu's technical application is very good. His one mistake is he does not know the truth about Sil Bin Tap. His applicational crosses is chasing arms.

      @@vartuolosaadeldin8923 sorry about your shoulder. Though I’d first advise you to have a doctor check it out, you can also try to strengthen the small muscles by placing your upper arm against your body and using a very light dumbbell (a pound or two at most!) and bring your hand away from your body without moving the elbow or upper arm. Go very, very slow. This will strengthen the shoulder and, depending upon the issue, take the pain away. Hope that helps.

      Andy Bauer hi, Andy and thanks for watching. Unfortunately, I’m not too familiar with the Windy City but I’m pretty sure that’s where Dominick Izzo is. You could look him up. If anyone else knows someone up there let us know. But, either way, I don’t have an affiliate up there. I’ve got an instructor in Madison, WI though. And if all that doesn’t work, you can join our online Academy too. Thanks again and good luck. Just let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

    Good video and explaination..The tan sao can work against the boxers hook if you demonstrate it as a tan da then it would be harder for the opponent to get off the other punch while you defend and attack at the same time, followed by multiple strikes after the first initial hit.

    • @mokyan7
      @mokyan7 5 лет назад

      If you have tried having a partner hook punch you, increasing the force, you feel that a plain tan sao is not stromg enough. Plus if you meet his elbow his arm will fold and hit you in the face.
      I much prefer the fak sau/biu type arm interception, it is much stronger, you can slam the other arm into attackers neck as you keep inside the arc, then grab and knee them.

    • @tomrocs
      @tomrocs 5 лет назад

      Matthias633 yes, but if your opponents force is too much on a punch when employing a tan sao then you should immediately switch to bong sao to redirect his energy.

    If nothing else, these movements are good dynamic stretching. let's face it, static stretching boring as hell. 😀 As we get older, we're not as flexible as we used to be. You know you're old when you get up in the morning, the first thing you do is check the obituary section of the morning paper, if you didn't see your name on the list, then you can start stretching 😀Don't get me wrong, I still love chasing women at my age, but now, once I catch them, I don't know what the hell to do with them. 😀
    BTW, love all your videos. new sub here. Love the way u explain things. 😀

    Good video for the class room setting But as a seasoned practioner in wing chun different in the street and a non compliant opponent.a must for these techniques spar all out even spar with someone who doesnt know wing chun a good boxer or mma that is how you will know if any of your techniques will work on the street

      Mark Cohen because EVERYONE on the street (or any where a fight might happen) does boxing or MMA, I'm fed up of everyone just saying that like a bunch of parrots, if you do Wing Chun you should know, or at least believe, that Wing Chun can holds its own against a boxer or MMA fighter (they most likely won't be professionals) if you don't believe this then don't do Wing Chun do them styles

      @@ninjafeet7915 yes I understand this I been doing wing chun for over 20 yrs 10 of those years was with moy yat.and I deal with agression and violence just about every day as I work in corrections.and most practioners they dont know what real violence or aggression is wing works of course if you make it your own.and also wing chun sifus get destroyed out on the street from just someone who can scrap.wing chun makes your odds better of course.Will it make you invincible like alot of wing chun practioners think.like you I also train in diffrent arts wing chun,jkd,krav maga as well.there is just not enough free sparring in schools it is all about chi sao great but does not prepare you for real life violence
