"I'm going to show you what happens when you fly into a wall at full speed on Hard mode" *ship explodes instantly* "And, that's why it's in Awful Games" No, this isn't a good reason. This is not an awful game. That makes sense in the context of the game. Even on Easy, running headlong into a wall at full speed does a great deal of damage.
I'm baffled that this game is considered awful. Controls are great, graphics are great, gameplay is awesome. Most importantly, the game is original and quite deep. Games like Lunar Lander played with the same momentum in flight mechanic but Sub-Terrania takes it to a whole new level. It's a space shooter that has a different objective every level rather than: shoot everything you see. And the difficulty curve is totally fair. Anyone can get past the first level, second level takes practice, third level takes real problem solving skill, and so on. If anything Sub-Terrania is a grossly underrated classic whose worst crimes are not being identical every other shmup of the 90s and taking more than 20 seconds to figure out. Oh, and it was tailor made for speedrunning. Ignore what everyone says, try it for yourself, form your own opinion.
Sub-terrania is undoubtedly the best game that has ever been featured in the "awful" block of a GDQ. Seriously, what's it doing here? The only reasons they have are that the controls are sensitive and it's hard when you play on the hardest difficulty. It's an excellent game.
@@allencummings7564 If you are flying close enough to get caught on a tiny block and self-destruct, you're flying too close. That's a player fault, not game fault.
I saw the clips of this in the official terrible games compilation and had to watch this in full - Mike and the couch really had the gift of gab during this run and it looks deceivingly fun...
Sub-Terrania is one of the best games of the 16bit era, it didn't receive a 9 out of 10 by EDGE for nothing. It's just that most people (especially in America) have no experience with the sub-genre of gravity shooters (which is amazing). Here in Europe, the success of games like Thrust and Oids back in the 80s created a fanbase for this style of games. This is why europeans usually appreciate Sub-Terrania more than americans.
By "awful" game, you mean "awfully hard" game. That was part of its charm. It requires intense focus to master, just like the original Flashback. The soundtrack is awesome because it was done by Jesper Kyd JAKOBSon. If it took more than one shot, you weren't using a Jakobs. *Note:* PixelJunk Shooter is the spiritual successor to Sub-Terrania. 14:32 Every SHMUP from the '80s and '90s had to have something that resembles "options." Why are they called "options" anyway? 17:50 Svin's final form looks like a nudibranch (aka "sea slug"). 19:55 Notice how they even use the descriptor "cool-minded," no doubt referring to the mental focus this game requires to be played proficiently.
this is such a rewarding game. It's really hard to learn but once you learn how to play it you have a good time. It's sort of like Ecco the Dolphin in that regard
I god damn knew I've heard something reminiscent of Jesper Kid in this soundtrack. Something that reminded me of his music in the Batman & Robin game for Genesis.
How have I never heard of this game before? Leaving the "Better than Super Mario Bros. 3" joke aside, this game is awesome. Like how is it not one of the most well known Mega Drive games? I can totally see this game being released even today.
You can get a new, sealed copy on eBay for $15-20 right now, if you are so interested. Several different vendors have it. A couple people are even selling boxes of the game, so it must have been extremely overproduced. I think it's a really fun game, too, in any event.
To be fair, _"how is it not one of the most well known Mega Drive games?"_ is something you could say about basically every good Mega Drive game that isn't Sonic.
I have to admit their reason for it being here didn't make sense to me. You explode when you run into a wall full speed in hard mode? That sounds about right to me. Did I miss something?
Had it on the Genesis as a kid, and it's an excellent game! Maybe Hard mode is shit, but I've never played that one before Might not be a classic, but it's not bad enough to be with Superman 64, Arabian Nights, and A Dog's Life
lindo lindo demais esse jogo , cara joga muito , sem dizer que agente acaba aprendendo a finalizar mais rapido mesmo que não seja completamente igual ao video
I was dumb enough to buy this game from a bargain bin growing up, and holy shitballs was it hard. Absolutely hated playing it, the controls really are a huge pain, this guy makes it look super easy though.
I feel like if you havent played this game you don't understand how hard it is. This game destroyed 10 year old me. This game was hard for the sake of being hard, like dark souls games.

I have to admit. Mike is one of the funniest runners I ever watched.

i love uyamas runs. hes got such a great personality and really seems to enjoy being there.
I... loved this game as a kid. There's no way this should be listed as a terrible game it's INSANELY fun.
Probably one of the funniest runs I've watched at AGDQ
"Another reason why this game is objectively better than Mario 3 is..."

Right? I loved this game as a kid. "Hard mode is hard!" No shit Sherlock.
Agreed, and it's not even close. Sub-Terrania is an EXCELLENT, albeit hard af game.
I Love the game. It's still awful that you get caught on a tiny piece o' the map and vibrate-death.
It belongs in this block

I had that game when I was 8 years old, watching this guy crush it is awesome.
I'm convinced. This Subterrania is better than Mario 3

Glad Mike finally made it back
"Made it back"?
What happened to him?
He had a long absence due to being very sick.
I had this game as a kid. It's fucking hard as balls.
"Genesis does what NintenDON'T."
Mike Uyama's commentary is fantastic.

this is a really great run and I love that Mike is obviously a turbo nerd about this game. dude just fuckin' loves him some Sub-Terrania.
Sad people will never understand just how hard that game is. And he’s casually chatting and speed running it....
better than mario 3

This game does not belong in awful block.

I love the look of this game and it seems like it has some pretty cool mechanics too.
This game is making my Solar Jetman PTSD flare up...... D: !
Why, Rare? Whyyyyyyyyy?! *cries in corner*
"now this IS a first party game"...as the title screen reads "(c) 1993 Zyrinx" .....lol

I rented this several times in the 90s and never got anywhere. Hard but very good fun
this game looks incredible!!!
Welcome back my old friend
Was this in the Awful Block? I don't think this game is awful at all :(
Fair enough :P
ikr? this looks great.

Watching a speedrun of it from a previous awful block actually made me buy it.
Best music hands down
Great game
That runner entertained me more than Super Mario.
I remember playing this game way back when. Loved the soundtrack and the gameplay. The controls were a bit wonky, but overall enjoyed it.
i always thought that was master blaster on level 3 down there by the huge cannon thing. nice to see he got a mining job after his adventure
monkaS Clap You're doing great boss
That Kenny Omega shout out at 18:54 though.
This game actually looks pretty good to me. I definitely would play it on normal difficulty

OMG, I played this game as a kid. I didn't beat it, unsurprisingly. But I had fun while I tried.

So many shots fired during the commentary this time.
4-way race when?

this was funny af
"I'm gonna get out of here and think of what I did" what did you even do
funny as hell, just thanks !
Oh cool! This game is like Pixel Junk Shooter!
Is it just me or does the main character look like Derek Zoolander with a ponytail?
good god it's like jets n gunz crossed with lunar lander
still better than mario 3 though I gues
Nice run. How did you do to have such a good resolution on the genesis?
13.15 definitely my worst nightmare in this game lol
What does the guy in the crowd shout?
Soundtrack by jesper kidd
I can not get past the fourth stage in the easy imagine play so
this game went through 2 difficulty reductions!? i had this game as a kid and could only get to level 3. the controls are extremely sensitive.

Mario 3 should be in Awful Block over this.
Mario 3 is bad. Legitimately.
