These guys were part of The English Beat after the band broke up. Most of the other guys became General Public. Both The English Beat and General Public are worth your time and attention.
I think I was 12, and it cracked my best friend up that his voice was the only one I could perfectly mimic. I'm not sure if it's weirder for him or me that that was the perfect voice for me as a 12 year old girl.
Yes Shon, 'Suspicious Mind' is a cover of Elvis, though Elvis's one was also a cover. In the FYC version Jimmy Somerville (Bronsky Beat, The Communards) did the backing vocals. Jimmy joined the band at least once to sing the song at a live concert. Look it up, if you're interested: Fine Young Cannibals - Suspicious Minds - 5/31/1986 - Ritz
Always loved this song. I read somewhere years ago that the singer did not audition. He was hired for his looks and likely told them he could sing. They were thrilled what a great singer he was.
These are the fine Young Cannibals, 😮"She Drives Me Crazy" 🤪 what a great video! 80'S, 80'S, 80'S all the way, part of the New Wave that swept us away loving every minute! Peace 😊✌️ Gary ☮️ Great Reaction👍
I love this one, and I love their "Good Thing" even more 🙂 Both songs were in the movie "Tin Men," which was filmed when Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfuss were in their prime - great movie.
2 years after this was released, I was taking calculus in college and my TA looked just like Roland Gift but wearing a Mister Rogers sweater! I will never forget him!! I loved this song!
I remember when this came out, and to this day I have had no idea what he's saying in most of the song, lol! Also, I agree with you his falsetto is awesome! ❤
When I first heard it no other group had this same falsetto sound and beat . . . It just rocked your speakers like crazy. One of the best techno songs ever.
Now you must do "Good Thing" and "Don't Look Back" from the same album. Good Thing is possibly the best party song - you can't sit still. The singer, Roland Gift, did some acting, most notably in the British movie "Scandal", a true story from the early '60's.
Never knew the name of the song or the group! I listen to it in the radio, and at the time I didn't even understand the lyrics, because I learned english many years after. Even without that, the emotion on the singing hit hard, it was one of my favourites back then. Fantastic seeing it again here, on this day, after so many changes. Half a life later.
This album ("The Raw and the Cooked") had a bunch of great songs. After finding this one, I went back to check out their first album with the hit "Johnny Come Home" and Elvis cover "Suspicious Minds", but both albums had good songs - the radio hits were just the more popular ones.
Another one of FYC's big hits was 'Johnny Come Home'. A completely different vibe but Roland Gift's voice is really unique and hard to ignore. 🙋♂ Hope you can check that one out too Shon. Nice reaction man.
This was one of my road trip albums back in the day. The Raw & the Cooked. Great album - my favorites: Good thing, Dont Look Back Its ok, its alright And this one, but the whole album is good!.
I was in the last year of high school when this rocked the charts - I love the guitar riff in this, there's another hit of theirs called 'Ever Fallen In Love' which is quite catchy too, when i first heard FYC i thought they were American lol, cheers bro :)
Additional songs to checkout are "Good Thing" and "Johnny Come Home". The bassist and guitarist were in another band called "The Beat", although in the US they're name was The English Beat. When The Beat broke up they formed FYC, two of them listened to hundreds of audition tapes before choosing their singer. As for the video, well it was the 80's and we like to be wacky and/or weird, plus if the video was also low budget.
Defiantly both surprised and intrigued first hearing them in the 80s - my thought then was... another new 80's vibe? Had just adjusted to *"Gary Numan - Cars"* (completely composed on synthesizer)
One of the signature marks of a lot of 80s videos is random weirdness, and it was delightful. But you could say to me “I have no idea what is going on in this 80s video” and I wouldn’t even ask which one. I’d just nod. 😂
Exremely talented band that had a very short career. The song that broke them in the UK was "Johnny Come Home" a great jazz pop song. I would suggest to try a band you have no done before - the iconic 40 + years in the business NEW ORDER = they have the biggest club single of all time - but I would suggest the great pop song "CRYSTAL" all actors in the video and influenced the band name for the KILLERS from Las Vegas. NEW ORDER have a ton of hits!
Please do 'Good Thing' by them! And yeah, 'Suspicious Minds' is a cover - but thanks - I'd never heard their cover before, or at least didn't remember it.
Absolutely love this group shon.roland gift so unique. Suspicious minds is the elvis song and is a great version.massive rabbit hole "good thing". " I'm not the man I used to be". "The flame". "Ever fallen in love"the list goes on and on.
yeah, those 80's videos were sometimes abstract and weird -- as opposed to telling a story from beginning to end as in current videos tend to do. As for Suspicious Minds, their version is AWESOME, and yes it is a remake of Elvis' version.
Drummers keep the tempo so the speed is constant. Of course, drummers also add emphasis on certain beats to establish the feel of the piece. It is the heartbeat of the song.
a few 80's videos looked like art student projects.they're fun and memorable.which is good cause the video will remind you of the song and you may listen to it again. no auto tune just ro land gift.
Haha. Some singers are born with "Squeezed Nuts Syndrome" lol. The reason I liked the crazy song was because in 89 not much happening in the music world. This song stuck out❤
Hey man I got something totally WACK for you here 🤣🤣 These guys were the most brilliant conceptual art of the 1970s(!) and almost no one knows now how coherent, super talented and fun they were! The concept was technology and chemical pollution were de-evolving the human species: regressing and ILL. But they also wove through a LOT of humor 😉 So: now for something you didn’t know existed! ✊🏽 [ideally, watch as a Reaction] ruclips.net/video/pegs3LFf6t8/видео.htmlsi=NAnfUDhlfmQJqV0s
Still on my list to this day. Perfect 80s vibe.
Good Thing by them is great!
😊Yes !😊
I ❤ Good Thing.
Yes! Plus, the scooters!
Their song "Good Thing" from the same album is another great one to check out.
Also worth a look is "Good Thing" from Terence Trent D'arby.
Great band with their own distinctive sound. That song ruled the airwaves when it came out.
He’s got a great falsetto (that high voice technique you’re describing). I can’t believe this song came out in ‘89. I’m so old!!!
Me too! I was in grad school and working at a record store. Brings back a bunch of great memories.
Mayer Hawthorne (from group Tuxedo) also has a brilliant falsetto more modern soul/dance tracks
Loved this group and the unique vocals of Roland Gift. Another great song by the group is 'Good Thing'.
These guys were part of The English Beat after the band broke up. Most of the other guys became General Public.
Both The English Beat and General Public are worth your time and attention.
Im so lucky ..I married someone that looks exactly like Roland Gift🥰30 yrs together...love this song ...the while cd is a masterpiece
Wow your husband is only about 5 year old :)
Yes, Suspicious Minds is a cover of the same song that Elvis performs but in a totally different style..
Just a classic song from the time. This whole album is full of hits and great songs but this is probably the stand out.
Johnny Come Home, Good Thing, Ever Fallen in Love and Suspicious Minds all brilliant tracks
I believe the video was done by the same director who did the video for New Order's song "True Faith". Another great song.
I remember sitting in front of my old beat-up tv in my room when this came out. I was 14, it was something new, fresh and it rocked.
I think I was 12, and it cracked my best friend up that his voice was the only one I could perfectly mimic. I'm not sure if it's weirder for him or me that that was the perfect voice for me as a 12 year old girl.

Just wanted to say I love seeing how you check out and appreciate all kinds of music. Thanks, as always, for sharing with us.

10,000 Maniacs (with Natalie Merchant) the MTV live version of "Because the night"....wilk blow your mind. Instrumentals to die for.
Her singing is astounding!
This song... and album, were HUGE! LOVE your enthusiasm, Shon!
I love this one, and I love their "Good Thing" even more 🙂 Both songs were in the movie "Tin Men," which was filmed when Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfuss were in their prime - great movie.

You can certainly tell when you see an 80s video!

Yep - I’d second ‘Jonny come home’ sung as a parent of a runaway son 😢
This was one of my road trip albums back in the day. The Raw & the Cooked. Great album - my favorites:
Good thing,
Dont Look Back
Its ok, its alright
And this one, but the whole album is good!.
Love, love, love Fine Young Cannibals ❤
Thank you for reminding me of the songs I used to love!
Loved them. Still listening to them from time to time. Yes Suspicious Minds was a cover
Great memories that this song brings back ! 1989 was quite a great year !!👍👍…
I was in the last year of high school when this rocked the charts - I love the guitar riff in this, there's another hit of theirs called 'Ever Fallen In Love' which is quite catchy too, when i first heard FYC i thought they were American lol, cheers bro :)

Don't forget General Public - the other half of the beat. Tenderness. :)
😊😊Fun, funky 80s !😊😊
Their version of the Elvis song... ''Suspicious Minds'' is my favorite ! You should listen !
Roland Gift also acted in a few films.
I never knew that. I'll check it out !

Yes suspicious minds is a great cover of the Elvis song!
You are the perfect reactor.
Love your positive attitude man!! Keep up the good work!
I’ve always loved this song. Thanks for the great review Shon
Yes it's the Elvis cover! ❤
This was HUGE at the time ✊🏽
Defiantly both surprised and intrigued first hearing them in the 80s - my thought then was... another new 80's vibe? Had just adjusted to *"Gary Numan - Cars"* (completely composed on synthesizer)
I would say they made it more colourful for MTV. Please react to their song “Johnny come home”.
One of the signature marks of a lot of 80s videos is random weirdness, and it was delightful. But you could say to me “I have no idea what is going on in this 80s video” and I wouldn’t even ask which one. I’d just nod. 😂
Please check out “I’m Not Satisfied” from the same album as this song! Super catchy chorus and overall just a banger!
Exremely talented band that had a very short career. The song that broke them in the UK was "Johnny Come Home" a great jazz pop song.
