Locating an Unlocatable Water Pipe - Acoustic Locator to the Rescue!

  • In this video, Ben Minutoli, manager of Geelong Cable Locations, use an acoustic locator, to locate the position of a poly water pipe from the water meter, that is in the garden at the front of the property, through to the house.
    Using his cable and pipe locator, he had first already located, the underground power cable, telephone cable, and gas pipe, which were all going from the street to the house. But when he then tried to find the water pipe he found he could not induce a signal onto the utility, which means the pipe must have been plastic and would not be locatable.
    Next, he tried the ground-penetrating radar. We can generally get good results when looking for water pipes with the radar, but unfortunately today, on this site, the radar was not able to see this service.
    So he then got out the acoustic locator and also decided to set up the camera, as back then when we did this job, we didn't have any footage of the acoustic locator in use, so thought this might be a good site to capture it on.
    Plus, it's also a good example, to show that, although we may sometimes have trouble finding some underground services, there is always more than one way to locate any particular underground utility.

    Actually, if you don't know about the Dial Before You Dig certification you can find out more about it here at a blog post Ben wrote when it first came out: geelongcablelocations.com.au/...
    And you can also read more about it on another blog post he wrote 12 months after it was started, as well as some tips on how to know which locator to pick to come out to your site: geelongcablelocations.com.au/...
    If you have a question about either of those blog posts or, better still, if we can be of any assistance to you with any of your locating needs-or even if you’d just like to discuss a project you’re working on-then feel free to call us toll-free on 1800 449 543.

      can any accoustic device which is used for underground leak detection system could locate the underground pvc pipes?

  • @sam111880
    @sam111880 5 лет назад +2

    Never considered acoustics or ultrasound transmitters/receivers for pipe detection when the piping doesn't have a trace wire or isn't metal based. Alot of times i heard that the trace wires can be corroded/ broken so ultrasound and acoustics is another option when this occurs

      @@GeelongCableLocations cool there is only two other type of underground wire/cable that i not sure how to identify fully yet. 1) fiber 2) coaxial (or anything shielded). I know you can use TDR to get approximate cable lengths and where down the wire a break is ...etc, even continuity testers give you a crude way of finding if a wire has an open or short. But locating/mapping out shield wire or fiber wires do you uses an acoustics /ultrasound transmitter for this to (aka how to map out the path of the fiber and coaxial cables underground) . Because i am concerned about the shield blocking the transmitted signal. Do you normally put a trace wire on these fiber and coaxial cables or do you possible uses ground wires on a coaxial ?

    I have a water spigot on my detached garage that doesn’t work. How can I locate the line without being able to run water through it?

    • @GeelongCableLocations
      @GeelongCableLocations  5 лет назад

      Hi Adam,
      Yeah you should be able to, you just have to use a different technique.
      You would use a EMF locator or if it is plastic then a GPR.
      But you wouldn't be able to use this acoustic locator to find it if it doesn't work.
      Cheers Ben

    Hey Aussies. I'm in the USA... Virginia... on the east coast. Can you pass-along any details about the device you used to find the water pipe? Thanks from up yonder.

      Hey Chip,
      Thanks for watching the video and yes I can definitely help you out with that.
      The unit we are using is actually a combination of a water leak detector and a domestic tap connector that is made locally.
      If you shoot us an email to ben@geelongcablelocations.com.au I will be able to put you in touch with the guy I brought it off.
      We have actually brought a few things off him, so depending on what you do, you may also be interested some of the other gear he has to sell.
      There is another acoustic locator that we have, of which he sells that we use to locate larger water mains, not domestic water pipes like this one.
      In case you're interested, here is the video I did of it, that I posted to Facebook, which you can take a look at by clicking this link goo.gl/kr8EiF
      Regards
      Ben
