  • In this special SEGAGuys Re-view voted for by our Members, James and Dan look back at Sonic Team's last Sega Saturn title Burning Rangers.
Is it hot property, or did Yuji Naka and team burn themselves out?

One of the very, very few games I with it got an upgraded version on the Dreamcast or Xbox. I also would had loved if they had actually released Shenmue for the Saturn as intended and its upgraded version on the Dreamcast, but you know, we can dream.
I was 12 or so and this was one of the best games of that generation for me, among Tomb Raider I through III, Gran Turismo 2, Shining Force III (all scenarios), Grandia and more.

The Jumping in this game feels exactly as floaty as Sonic Adventure with the 3D pad. Most likely was the blueprint for their ...next adventure ;P

I see what you did there.

The irony being had this been a launch title it would have been viewed on the same level as Mario 64 at the time.
Sadly it came a few years too late for the final product that was delivered. I can't begin to imagine a polished sequel to this on the DC and how good it would have been.

Love this game. It’s up in an attic somewhere, hopefully not rotting

Definitely sounds like a gem of a game - maybe if it had more time it could've been a classic. Eye watering price though! 😅 great double review lads!

Great REview lads. I'm like James - great game but the camera does naff me off a fair bit. I haven't sat and completed it yet but I did finish the first episode and really enjoyed the game itself. Brilliant stuff

I'm gonna buy a Satiator this year... and THIS will be high on the list of games I'm gonna finally play first!

Another great review. Will we see a return to a Saturn Racer soon, Sonic R perhaps?

I'm going for 'hot mess' I'm afraid. Sonic Team were 'gaming gods' as SSM had it, so I can't condone them releasing a scrappy title that wasn't optimised for the Saturn to produce the best graphical performance possible. The SS needed a AAA title at this time, and after shitting all over the Sonic titles others had tried to produce, it was fairly unimpressive for Sonic Team to come out with something that looks this poor. A few things I don't get - why the round mesh 'shadows' under the characters, when there's no light source above them anyway, so why not just not have a shadow and lose some unnecessary code? With the fire effect using a new programming configuration for the VDPs, why is the smoke still an ugly mesh? It's all very puzzling and as they said, their thoughts were on Dreamcast development at this time, so they half-arsed it. As you can tell I was a wee bit annoyed. 😂 Not taking away from it being an amazing game, it was just that games coming out looking dog rough was all we needed as Saturn owners back in the day.

Can understand the annoyance, it was either rushed out of Sonic Team had more than half an eye on Sonic Adventure.
We still feel it's a fantastic game, and the effects and scope are often superb, it's just rough in places and feels like it needed a few months more QA! - Dan

I remember buying this when it came out. one of the last PAL releases if I remember correctly, it was so disappointing. the game felt so janky, they should have held it back and released it on the Dreamcast instead. Wish I'd kept it though...

I do love what they did on the Saturn, just wish they spent time to polish a lot of it up! Love what they managed to do visually though we do agree it's a little rough - Dan
