The thought that some mom probably used one of these apps to digitize her treasured family photos and then THREW AWAY THE NEGATIVES makes me so extremely depressed.
I hate that these are aimed at people for preserving memories when the results are as poor as they are

@@AnalogResurgence A long time ago, when I was like, 18 or so. (28 now). I found a roll of undeveloped 120 film that my dad had shot years ago. I took it upon myself to take them to a lab and have it processed and scanned. THEN DIDN'T TAKE THE NEGATIVES BACK. Just the really small scans. I am still angry at myself. I can't imagine throwing away negatives now that I know better.
Cleaned out my closet once and tossed out a ton of negs from the 90s and early 2000s from all the green fuji single use cameras i used to take to school. I hate myself. 😔

I love the passive-aggressive (and sometimes just aggressive) tone of this video. But DSLR scanning would be a good video topic, like how to get good-ish scans with what is commonly available for people just starting out

@@AnalogResurgence you are doing gods work ;) although i did install film lab after finishing the video because using it as a quick and dirty preview will certainly come in useful. keep doing what you are doing love your videos :)
@@AnalogResurgence I think these might be a really useful tool for ID'ing found negatives "in the field", where getting a quick and dirty look at an approximately inverted negative can be pretty valuable.

A few months back, my dad took our Epson flatbed scanner (I think it is the 550?) and used it to scan like thousands of our childhood photos (as well as a very very small number of ancient photos of older family) over several weeks and while he had to do a lot of labor for it, it really was a good thing to do. Definitely scan your photos well imo. Great video, loved the absolute disdain shown here for garbage quality stuff lmao

Just bought one of these apps, great for sorting through film strips and selecting the most interesting/relevant ones but that is it. Still saving up for a proper setup for the real treatment/digitizing.

I think that film lab app would be ok for taking shots of contact sheets. You could have an archive of all of your films contact sheets in pictures. Synced to a cloud for backup of course.

Thanks so much...I have all these old black and white negatives I've placed into sleeves and a preservation box. Now I need to buy a light box and plan to either test out film box or just invert the image with the iPhone to see if worth having it developed at our local photo store...( I think its still open!!)

Great advice and having been looking to try and digitize some negatives using my cell phone, I think I will just look at using one of the flatbed scanners at work. It solves the lighting and pixel problems and I can adjust the size and color and crop the results using my pc.

Your flatbed needs to have a capability to scan negatives. Not every flatbed has that ability!

Good video. Scratched my head a bit at 13:55 the “older generation” are the ones who grew up and lived half (or more) of our lives shooting film. Even if it was just Polaroids or 35mm disposable cameras, we’re all familiar with shooting film and getting it developed at a lab. I still remember when the photo labs became the “one hour” photos labs. I was amazed. It used to take days to get your prints back. Suddenly, they could get them back in an hour? That was in the 1990’s.
I suppose there are some people older than me who might be fooled by the false promises of the digital Ethernet world. I can’t image ever putting all my trust in digital preservation. Hell, just a good dose of static electricity can be enough to smoke digital media.

I was looking for like an old style 70's tv fanfare kind of thing, but didn't want anything too recognizable. This was one I didn't know and it's funny to see some of my UK viewers tell me they remember it!

Color is always crappy when using video to scan color negatives... Back in the 90's I had an RCA telecine (600 pounds) porting to a BetacamSP camera (before HD). My color reversal (positive) footage was gorgeous -- spectacular color. But when I tried transferring a camera negative then reversing it, the color was horrible. No amount of adjusting made it look good. So I did some homework, talked to a few Hollywood experts and found the problem. You can't capture a color negative with red, green and blue filters/pixels. Film negatives store color in a subtractive set of dyes. To properly capture a color negative, you must use cyan, magenta and yellow filters instead. Then when reversed, the cyan image becomes red, the magenta image becomes green, and the yellow image becomes blue, and the color will be perfect. You can't do this with any color camera. So I tried 3 passes using a B/W camera with a cyan, magenta, and yellow filter, then reversed each to become red, green and blue, then composited them to an RGB final image. A pain, but it worked... ... As for capturing negatives with a cell phone: Tilt! Error! No! Don't! You have to be a special kind of stupid to even try this.

Made the mistake of getting a phone scanner thinking how bad it could be. I last used it like 5 months ago and have had it for 6 months.
I've inherited a ton of family slides to go through, unaware of these things.

First we need a standing tripod and a adjustable frame to keep desired stable distance from the film then on software we need the contrast calibration to put color on any film from black and white to color

Lightroom is defs the best even though its a little bit less automatic. In the app select ur photo and then press the light option. press the dot on the far left and u will see a slider going in a diagonal direction. Flip it so it is going diagonal across the opposite corners. it will look pale and weird. Then go to the color option and mess w the temperature (going towards the cool will make it redder and going towards the hot will make it cooler bc its a negative) and then keep fiddling with that aswell as the other color options and the effecrd and detail options. It looks fantastic. I also recommend using an ipad or laptop screen on full brightness with a blank white photo as well as a few layers of wax paper over it for backlight. :) there are vids on youtube also about how to do it on lightroom that show u how but its honestly very easy

Haha... The only one of these apps I've personally tried is FilmLab, on Android. And you know what, I thought it was glitchy as heck and the results were terrible :-)
(And my use case was just a quick preview to show off before feeding the film into a proper scanner.)
I figured out that my light table was just too bright. I put some window tint on it (no idea how dark the tint is) and it helped a lot with that washed out look. It was a bit better.
Thanks for this. I had tried a few of these apps already, and was super frustrated for many of the reasons you've listed. And some of the subscriptions are insane. I mainly wanted something for scans of 4x5 film, which won't fit on my scanner, and for taking quick scans of paper negatives out in the field. But now I'm thinking I might as well just use the phone camera and invert and edit on my computer since it doesn't seem to be any worse than what these apps can do!
Great video, but left me with no choice but to go to an expensive lab, which I was trying not to do. U gave me hope, then dashed it.
I would, no joke, buy that book to forgo a warning of these trendy moments in Film.
Just imagine: there are probably some people scanning their negatives with one of those terrible apps and then throwing them away, thinking that they've captured the photos "forever."
I've scanned some photos for people before and had them ask me "Can I throw away the negatives now?" *Cringe*

How do you do it without getting reflections on the negative? No matter what I do I always get the reflection from my phones camera lenses coming back off of the negative in the photo.

My local library has a scanner for 8mm and 35mm film that is free to use as long as you have an account with them!!
What FilmLab does is already built in to iOS. Turn on the triple-click accessibility shortcut, select Classic Invert, open the camera app.
I mention that at the end of the video. Because it’s a straight invert it doesn’t properly handle inverting color negative and the orange mask. FilmLab is a better inversion for color negative then just the straight invert on iOS.
This video was very helpful! When I try to take photos of the negatives, my camera reflects off the negative so when I take the photo, you can see the camera. Anyway I can fix this?
These are the videos the film community needs to expose the BS that people try and put out when it comes to trying to capitalize on a market that needs innovation.

I'm looking for a way to get my Kodak Disc negatives on my computer. Nobody processes them anymore.
Film box tells you to hold the negative away from the light source because it assumes you’ll be using a screen as a backlight, and if you hold it against the screen it’ll pick up pixels. It’s still hot garbage, but it’s good advice.
You probably haven't been in the same funny mood as of this video since you talked about the "new" Kodak Super8 camera :'D

I use Film Scanner Pro to scan my 4x5 (which won’t fit in my scanner) and the larger negative size isn’t actually half bad in black and white when scanned properly on a light table and a diopter in front of the camera lens.
You're shooting 4*5 then using a phone app to scan it?! Why not sell your scanner and upgrade to one with 4*5 capacity for the price of a couple of boxes of film? You could do it pretty cheaply if you looked for an Epson 4990 - previous generation, more or less the same quality.
Which the best scan on the app ?
I just got the dustiest scans back from a lab, maybe just give them a test roll before giving them a bunch of negatives

I just tried the new version of the first one, but for slides (not that different from film strips, and wow... they look terrible still because you just held it whereever and an undetermined amount of space between your computer screen and your phone cam. My iphone 12pro has good cams on it and it is still crap. Ah well! I agree that the final app looks cool in what it allows you to do , and different in idea to the others ,but still...

If I ever shoot any pictures on film, I'll use a good film scanning device for it, or take it to a lab like you suggested. I would not use these garbage film "scanning" apps.

No experience with those ones at the moment, but a friend of mine has a Nikon Cool Scan and really really likes it. I believe it’s on the higher end of things price wise though.
I ways though you were a youngster that was into film, but after seeing you use that phone I think you might simply be 75 with a great complexion
I’ve tried “film box” before and it’s only free for 10 photos. You have to pay for scanning more.
This is best for microfilm in future archive and future ebook publishing and film 36 mm real color movie and projector movie
Amazing, I did better than most of the apps just using Snapseed! Had, problems with the curvature of the negatives though.

I know nothing about photography and your video made me confused. I recently came across a huge amount of family negatives, photos and slides plus some super 8 movies. I’m definitely going to take the movies to a lab but that’s all I can afford. What do I do with those negatives though?
Take the negatives to a photo lab for scanning! Search for something in your area that scans film or any photo lab and they should be able to transfer those negatives to a digital image for you.
Any ideas on why smartphones don't have negative filter in their camera apps? It used to be a thing on old phones
I know iPhones have a setting to invert the screen so you can use that with the camera app, but it's just a basic invert so it doesn't properly invert color negative film which has the orange base to it. It's fine for black and white though!
I use Open Camera, which does have a negative function.
I could get better results with a standard flatbed scanner.

I hate trying to find new apps to use. All the reviews are paid nowadays, or like some, they offer something for a 4 or 5 star review. I've tried a few, they all looked like crap so I came to your video.

Not really, motion picture film is in such large lengths that need to be captured frame by frame for quality results. Not something that just an app could do well.
Oh I am glad that I have a scanner (2) A Canon, and a Primefilm, even though that they dated from the late 1990's to early 2006 I am happy that I can use them.... These Cell phone apps are not going to work, Really can you really want to have a photo exhibit, and then tell them that you use your phone to scan them??? If you want to present your work from film (35mm to 4x5) spend the extra $$$$ and get a scanner - BUT make sure that it is updated to ACCEPT your computer if not then Go Ahead waste your time using your Cell Phone TRICORDER, and try scanning your images with OFF COLOR shots...
luckily in my country film scanning only costs 91 cents per roll of 35mm negative
