Skydio 2 Crash Video 😭 and how I got my replacement Skydio 2

  • On my second day of use, I crash my skydio 2 while trying to record a drone shot riding a motorcycle. Take this as a form of how not to crash skydio 2 tutorial and how I got my replacement Skydio 2 from Skydio Customer Service. Compared to DJI Mavic Air 2, the skydio 2 is still far superior for obstacle avoidance, but at least DJI has an insurance package you can buy that give you a little breathing room. This was supposed to be my motovlog drone but skydio 2 failed due to my stupidity. New release of Skydio 3 may solve these issues but unless the company relaxes a bit on its warranty clauses, the issue will be the same for Skydio 3. It was a heart break moment and it took a while for me to get over it. But thankfully Skydio Customer Service was very helpful explaining to me what went wrong and decided to give me a one time replacement skydio 2 after reviewing my earlier videos. The saving grace was that the Skydio 2 Drone was acting oddly by giving me "land immediately obstacle avoidance is disabled" message with an alarm. I did not know why it gave me that message but it happened twice that day, leading up to the crash. After reviewing the Skydio warranty policy and safety flight guidelines, I realized that the environment I was flying the autonomous drone at the time of the crash was against 3 things that Skydio warned me not to fly in: avoid flying in areas with power lines, avoid flying near tree branches without leaves, and do not fly on public roads when it is tracking a motorized vehicle. Maybe Skydio 3 may have better AI technology and confidence for the company to drop some of those restrictions but for me, those red tape guidelines extremely limit my ability to film myself riding a motorcycle. I am now stuck where I can continue to film myself riding and risk losing the drone for good without warranty or if I should just sell the drone to get some of my money back. I love pairing the skydio 2 and my motorcycle but not at the cost of losing +1500USD. Time will tell.

I know it was my fault for bringing the device in an area that was going against the flight guide. It was my second day using it and I got overly confident after watching other youtube videos where it was doing some crazy shit. My only saving grace was that my skydio giving me "Land Immediately - Obstacle Avoidance is Disabled" for no reason few hours prior to the crash. I sucks but life goes on! If this can help others make an informed decision, I achieved my goal. Thanks for watching and give me some feedback in comments!

Before you fly drone, you gotta know the limitation of your drone. I had a DJI mavic air but I was never able to shot action video with it. It was almost impossible. I am a cyclists and do lots of outdoor activities but never was able to shot action video alone. Skydio seems to be the one comes to closest to that dream. Miles ahead of DJI in technology, but it's not perfect. I lost my DJI mavic air yesterday in Florida off coast swamp from "return home" malfunction. What can I say! You were lucky to get a second chance. Just use it in some reasonable degree where skydio 2 can handle. I am going to buy Skydio 2. I am not going to buy another DJI. I was never happy with it.

Oh no that was painful just watching it.
I crashed my mavic air also soon after getting it also from using the follow me feature. So I gave up on that.
Like you said it's too expensive to do all these crazy maneuvers. I have come to terms that I will just be manually flying it from now on. Even then it's unnerving when I fly it too far away, also because I am usually flying it in a forest setting.
So far I've only seen only you and Bret tkacs post fail videos on skydio. It's good that you do because I also thought wow it must be awesome cause I see more mavic fails and almost no fails from skydio.
It gives consumers more knowledge before buying.
    Glad you got your replacement!

While skydio definitely has better track record than the Mavic drones when it is flying autonomously, I realized it is a steep learning curve to properly fly the skydio to fly the way it likes. And in the process of going through the steep learning curve, most likely the owner will crash the drone.. I now have a phone mount on the handle to observe its flight live and only use "fixed track" instead of "motion track" function. So what it does now is it stays in one direction of flight rather than trying to compensate every-time I move my body position. But I am still scared shitless every time it is in the air lol.

@KS Moto Cafe I think at certain speeds all obstacles examined in planned path your scared 😱 -ness will get abated. I've been that way too playing with my new one for a week, but I go a lot slower at age 72 on a scooter so it's giving me great comfort lately in its ability.
I did inquire them by email what is ok max speed at worst case obstacle course (not max speed straight ahead), this should be interesting, am awaiting their response. They should have a spec on this one would think? Like a forest of .5" bars flying into it at 30 mph? 😆 Lol🤣🤣

The S2 is overdue for a major software update. My S2 has done some crazy stuff with 2 walkers as the subject - S2 are especially bad at CROSSOVERS - where a 2nd subject is in play like a crossing or overtaking subject - even two people walking together confuses it massively. They told me it was because my 2 people had black T-shirts - retried it with one person wearing red and one black. Same problem it cannot figure out which person to track. (if you watch the advertising a bike rider is never overtaken by another) I think it ignores colors and just builds a 3D map lattice polygon. Also, they should just sell spare parts ffs as a lot of pilots can solder and use tools (FPV pilots do fine). - been waiting for a battery charger in their store for 7 months - always out of stock? You might get good results by putting it up to 50m (above most trees). Good video! kudos.

    • @KSMotoCafe
      @KSMotoCafe  3 года назад +1

yeah every time I fly my S2 - I am only 51% certain it will come back to me safely. I am able to get some nice B Roll shots (which was my intent of the drone) but it definitely is not worry free like their promotional videos shows it as. I honestly believe it is the current firmware for the drone and the beacon. It just flies around wildly if you don't have a firm grip on it (ie have a dedicated pilot). Time will tell... thanks for your input!

Similar story to yours, crashed mine after the 3rd flight. It hit a power line while it was filming me at a bike park. I had to pay 600 bucks to get a new replacement. I also couldn’t find the battery so I had to buy another battery.
I wasn’t very happy but it is what it is, since I was already too deep into the money pit, I purchased the controller, and now it opened up different type of flying possibilities.
But as you mention, the Skydio 2 really does have very LIMITED autonomous flying abilities. To top it off, you’re always wondering if it’ll crash because you don’t have the confidence to set it and forget it.

Wow you are very lucky to have gotten a warranty replacement. I've learned a good tip from u of having a recording of any error encountered. I agree, since my first crash it made my confidence level of skydio avoidance lower and I definitely feel its 50/50 chance it may crash if one flies it over small roads with a mix of trees with leafless branches. I would recommend you get a handlebar phone mount so that in future you can watch the footage of your skydio as it flies to be sure its not getting into trouble when it is not in your line of sight

As I just commented on another video by a Skydio user ( Ryden Dirty ....I wish everyone saw his videos with skydio before buying it), there’s a lot of room for improvement……
It looks greater in most RUclips videos than in real-life….
Got mine a week ago…..even with the beacon, it gets lost fairly easily, erratic, flying totally disoriented…..
I use it to truck me in my motorbike…..riding very slowly, yet, crashed twice…….against a huge light pole….and a thick power line……I may understand the last crash….. but a huge light pole on a bright, sunny day???
    Very frustrating and disappointing.
Unfortunately, I am using in PR, a US territory, where it is excluded from the warranty. ( plus the power line.....but the light pole????)
Maybe, this is not a drone for everyone. Having to stop what you enjoy doing every time it gets lost, crazy, or even worse, crashing easily, doesn’t look as fun as I thought it was gonna be.
    Thanks for your review.

@@seveleleventwelve which is why people pay more to buy electronics that have better AI to help those 90% of the people who are negligent or want a device that can fly automatically like skydio promotes. If you say leafless branches are that common, they should expect customers to fly in areas with leafless branches. Even the skydio company's promotional videos have footage of skydio flying in areas with leafless branches but if a customer does the same thing and accidentally crashes, it gives skydio the opportunity to first deny the customer because of that clause. I am not saying skydio is a bad company, I just believe that clause seems too restrictive considering how common it comes up.
My point is, I paid extra to get this because I was convinced Skydio flies better than any DJI products. But at least DJI has an extra protection plan customers can buy for added insurance if they crash it or lose it under any circumstances. Skydio does not offer that. 2. You could use neither the beacon nor your smart phone to move or stop skydio in case of emergency, because you were busy riding your motorcycle and both beacon and the phone were in your pockets. What were you thinking?!
Do you want FAA to impose more and more restrictions on drone flyers? Do you want people to get hurt when accidentally struck by a drone flying by itself in an area where it's not supposed to be flown?
Respect other drone users: DO NOT EVER FLY A DRONE ON A PUBLIC ROAD

@@seveleleventwelve I see your safety points and they are 100% valid - thanks for that. I did end up putting a phone mount on the handlebar to give me more control over the drone while filming.
Flying over public road is not illegal but it needs to be 30m away from bystanders and must have full control and visual line of sight which I failed on both accounts on the day I lost my drone. I have learned my lesson and you have emphasized the issues I experienced. Thanks
edit: the second para is only valid within Canada. Every country has different regs for drone flying.
