Dredging With Vicky - NorthWest

  • An intermittant series, involving the fun and games often encountered on the more shallow canals of England. We start on the Trent and Mersey, for two bridges, and then the Shropshire Union Middlewich Branch for another two, the second was fairly deep just wish they were all like this, then one near the end of the Shroppie main line, and finally the Staffs and Worcs at Stafford heading the opposite direction - I'd previously spend nearly an hour getting through the other way, but it went though on the second attempt this time.
    It's the not the most exciting of videos, just wanted to save it for posterity and future reference.

      @@mykaskin Oh thanks for that, now I feel old. I passed you on the T&M or Staffs and Worcester a couple of years back, I was impressed by the way you worked up through a lock; so efficient. I haven't fully mastered doing them all on my own yet, there is always someone with me. I find going up is not too bad, but haven't mastered going down. I need to practice your trick with the centre line to open the gate.

    a tricky passage well handled, love the sound of the trad engines, on a good day you can hear them for miles away.

    Once again Mykaskin thank you for posting another great video, and yes even though it may not be exciting to some well it's exciting and suspense-full to me hoping you make it through the sallow water, please keep posting videos and always with the engine sounds, I love to hear those engines....wish I had one driving my pick-up truck,I'm no speed demond anyways Ha! and as always GOD bless you Mykaskin.....Johnny b

    Dear old Soote Hill Bridge, 200, north of Anderton. I got well and truly grounded one winter, heading north, just out of the bridge 'ole on Tebay. Couldn't move her an inch. Eventually, four walkers pulled her over on the centre line and I managed to creep out.

    There's a hell of a skill involved getting through that lot! I'm not sure I'd be able to do the same without a lot of practice ... not so much of a worry for the lighter boats I'm sure.

    Install a two blade rudder for better steering. Functions like a jet pipe

    Wow, don't know why I hadn't seen this video sooner. How deep are you? I'm 2'9" and only remember dragging under bridges on the Llangollen.

      Mine draws 29" at the skeg and last time we did the Llangollen we scraped bottom through many bridges. As for the length from Trevor to Llangollen itself, it was fine going up, but we bounced on the bottom coming back down. Beautiful canal though; we will be doing it again.

    How fast does sliding over mud wear out the hull? Not much I don't imagine or you wouldn't do it. Looks like great fun btw.

    The CRT should have dredger for each canal.

    You are very fortunate to have such a government maintained inland waterway. Although here in the USA we have many nice canal, river and lake navigation systems, (maintained by our Army corp of engineers). The beauty of your system astounds me, (even viewed from video). I have long wished to visit the UK. I have a question for you; how do you ever manage to keep from ruining your propeller while churning the bottom as you "narrow boaters" seem to often do? Gary, , Port Huron, Michigan U.S.A.

      The boats are designed so that bottom of the boat touches before the prop. Have a look at my Dry Dock video!

      I Just did, now I understand. We do not have dry docks available for anything ,but large ships. boaters here use travel lifts and marine railways to haul out for maintenance. inboard engine d and of course outboard engine boats pretty much have their propellers exposed to the bottom. We have a navigable canal here in Port Huron, Michigan. It connects Lake Huron to the Black river; which connects to the Saint Clair river; which in turn connects back to Lake Huron. This technically makes the north portion of Port Huron an Island, since it can be navigated clear around. Our canal is lined to prevent erosion with rock . this makes it hazardous to use, unless you are carefull to remain in the center.

      Hi Tor, glad you've enjoyed. It's a Lister JP2, 23hp at 1200 rpm. There are videos showing the engine better on my channel, including hand starting it as it doesn't have an electric starter.

    If they want more tourism, you must take care of the waterways. I think its time to dredge out for aprox 30 cm and everybody is happy

    Allthough i'm not familiar with the Brittish canals (yet), might i sugest aproaching those shallow parts at dead slow speed? That's how i do that on shallow canals here on the main land. I do hit the ground sometimes, but the ship slides over most of the times, because i don't take all my own water away.
    I do hope you understand what i'm saying here. :-)

      I understand, but often there just isn't enough water to float over, it's usually soft stuff, so I find getting it moving with a flow of water and squashing it down helps get the rest of the boat over. On really bad ones using the wash helps it get through too. If I went slow enough not to steal my water then it would take twice as long to get anywhere as it takes awhile to loose the speed when so well loaded as you know. You can see for bridges where it is deep enough it isn't much of an issue.

    Could someone explain the narrowness of the canal at 7:30? My only guess is that it was the site of a former bridge...

      It is the remains of a stop lock,These are used on long lenghts of canal to save water when maintenance is reqiured .

      Strangely the Ashby isn't a problem at the bridge 'oles however it can be silty in other bits.

      @@mykaskin My Steve Hudson would always drag the bottom, although now the Ashby is really full after all the rain and the breach repair at Snarestone.

    You cut the corner rather badly on the second bridge ! Have you been on the Caldon!?

      Hi, I happen to know that the outside of that corner is full of leaves and twigs, mainly because all the tourists cut the corner so best to pick the deepest bit!

    You need more horsepower!
    They should make it a bit deeper , so you can pass it at a normal way.... Dregding out is not as difficult as it looks like.. They only need a excavator for it and a lot of little barges to carry the mud away...

      The trouble is getting rid of the silt and spoil.
      There are now lots of rules and regulations to get rid of it, but you are right.

    The depth of this canal really is a disgrace. A lousy epitaph for the seventy years of state controlled British Transport Commission.
