- In 2022, China announced its first population decline in 60 years, a historic turning point for the world's most populous nation.
Here's a look at what China's population crisis means for its future and why reversing the decline may be tough.

You can stop people from having kids but you can’t force them to have more than one if they don’t want to. China’s going to learn it the hard way.
Well... you can, you just need to enslave half (third in China's case) of the population
Why do the media keep perpetuating the myth that the one child policy had reduced the birth rate. Look at when it was implemented and the decade before it and after it, and you’ll quickly realize that the policy has virtually no effect.
China already learned. They will benefit from population reduction. No country needs 1.5 billion people.
You are underestimating the chinese goverment. They were okay with post birth "abortions" and put ethnic minorities in labour camps but you think they can't force woman to have kids? Thats too far? We will see about that.
Where do you get millions of people to replace the falling population.... Perhaps you could offer Indian Muslims a better future and more opportunities than Hindu India.... Resolved....
Having children is a financial, and emotional burden. Many people just want to enjoy their own lives without the extra cost and stress.
Living is a financial and emotional burden, if all you want to focus on is the negatives.
have kids ? in this evonomy?😅
@@v-tiful hehe exactly.
Population is the game 😁.
blaming the economy to avoid being scrutinized by society.
even if the economy is doing extremely well, birth rates will still be low.
yeah and if some of these old people dont have any young chinese party loyalists to take care of them, then really it's a problem they should take up with the party rather than digging themselves deepeer in the hole. I guess this is why the CCP sees supplying weapons to Russia's military as an economic and financial opportunity to help stave off the demographic crisis which the CCP created decades ago. as if IP theft wasn't enough for them, now they want the west and the rest of the world to be come indebted to them in order to pay and work for the retirement of their senior age population. meanwhile they have the most billionaires out of any country in the world
Unfortunately, the issues are both more complex and more common than presented.
It's important to note that while China's one child policy was certainly a key factor in establishing the base of this problem, the current day drivers of this shift are drivers that have been seen before in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and others:.
- First and foremost, over the last 25 years women have made huge strides here through the education>employment>empowerment cycle, and as a result, are getting married and having kids later in life.
- Second to that, the costs of urban life, as mentioned, is a big one. Buying a 3br flat in one of China's Tier one cities can run up to 3m USD, or 1.5-2m in a tier 2. Add a bedroom (and a car to that) for a second kid, and as mentioned, having another kid is not something that many are choosing to take on.
- Add to that the burdens of caring for elderly, not mentioned, is not only a financial concern for many families, but for women this is an emotional one as they are often left to manage the care of her parents (and the parents of her husband).
Finally, if you look at the data surrounding the most recent fall off, the role of China's COVID policy cannot go unmentioned. It was a MASSIVE headwind to any couple thinking about kids, and while we need to let the data come in, it's expected that experience will have a lasting impact in the coming years.
Of course, everything I just mentioned is focused on URBAN families. Which is important to distinguish because if you travel through China, you will see that families with 2-3 kids are present outside of the major cities. Perhaps not at the rate needed to level out China's replacement rate, but in my recent travels, I am seeing more and more families with 2-3 kids in 3rd and 4th tier cities.
So, yeah, giving families a few thousand RMB as an incentive is likely not going to go very far, but at this point I think it is very hard to see a path where material improvements can be made because the reasons underpinning the challenge are not rooted in government policy.
Which only leaves us with. So now what? Do they keep building future-stranded infrastructure knowing that the population will draw down a further 30-50%?
Three things needed to have children.
1. Time
2. Money
3. Security
China has ticked none of these boxes.
China is fully able to raise their birth rate. Population decline isn't inevitable. It's whether the government is willing to accept the short term economic fallout.
That's a lesson for the best of us.
@@J_X999 Raising the birth rate, and reversing population decline are two separate issues, and while there are a few examples where both have happened they are all in Nordic countries.
In Asia, Japan, S Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, have all reverse birth rate decline, but are all still well below the replacement rate.
So, while it isn't inevitable, the chances of China, the probabilities are slim to none even with major intervention.
@@RichardBrubaker Raising the birth rate in tandem to old people dying off.
That means going up. Easy Asian countries birth rates aren't going up. They've hit rock bottom and aren't budging.
All I'm saying is long term population decline isn't inevitable, because anything could happen.
@@J_X999 Sorry, I am not sure how you come to that conclusion
1) Birth rates are lowest they have ever been in China, Singapore, Korea, etc, and in case of Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan, they have thrown significant resources at the problem... to little effect.
2) Death rates in China. Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore etc are only going to continue going up as the populations of elderly are exploding. In Singapore, it's called the grey tsunami, in Shanghai, the percentage of 65 and 80 year olds are growing significantly.
So, sure, perhaps they can stabilize (reverse) birth rates some (Europe was less than .5% gain), and ok, major medical breakthrough could extend average lifespan a year or two, but outside of that, there isn't much to suggest that this decline will be avoided.
If you've got a model that has proven otherwise, please reference it.
I'd be interested to see how a city/ country has make material progress to avert.
As a Chinese female, I only want zero to one child, not only because of economic reason, but also because of the hate of boy preference. Son preference is a big factor in how many children women want, yet the government and media don't realize its impact, or they just ignore it.
I want to correct one thing in this report. At 3:21, that lady who speaks in Chinese said it is the most disrespectful to one's parents is having no children. This is completely wrong! The meaning of "不孝有三,无后为大" is that: "Not loving one's parents can come with many ways. The worst one is to not fulfill your responsibility." This is just the first part of the passage, and most people ignore the second part. The second part describes an example that Yu failed his responsibility because he did not inform his parents that he was married and started a family. The original passage never mentions about no children.
无后为大 specifically refers to offspring/descendants, ie. 'not having descendants is the biggest (unfilial act)'. 后is for 后代=descendants.
@@pjacobsen1000 In Chinese, one word can have many meanings. Since it seems that you can read Chinese, I would suggest you to read the entire passage. Do not try to comprehend one sentence without the context.
@@learnbycoding I can read some, but not all. So here is an interpretation from someone else (taken from Baidu):
20世纪知名学者杨伯峻《孟子译注》的翻译是:“孟子说:‘不孝顺父母的事有三种,其中以没有子孙为最大。舜不禀告父母就娶妻,为的是怕没有子孙,因此君子认为他虽没有禀告,实际上同禀告了一样. 无子的结果是无孙,换个语词说“没有子孙”或“无子孙”,是继承赵岐说法。
@@learnbycoding native Chinese here. 无后 appeared in many old literatures and all of them means “no offspring” or “no children”. It’s nothing to do with the responsibility.
@@alex-shanghai Please read the entire passage. 不孝有三,无后为大。舜不告而娶,为无后也,君子以为犹告也。So, based on your understanding, this means that Yu has no children because he did not inform his parents that he got married? Your logic does not make any sense!
Reducing consumption by limiting population growth, Making solar energy the cheapest renewable in the world.
I mean you need to give credits to China on those.
No thanks for the additional noise !
China is strugglin for water resources. Declining population means sufficient food even in in drought years for most of the population
Except for Africa, the world's population is shrinking. In the next 10 years immigration patterns will begin to shift. The waves leaving Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America will slow. Africa will be the largest source of immigrants and labor to the world.
10 years from now NA and Europe might be competing harder than they are now for top immigration talent. This also depends on what India does. If India continues to be protectionist and not improve itself, it will continue to see massive brain drain as top talent leaves for wealthier countries. But if India becomes better at keeping it's talent at home, NA and Europe are in for some tough times.
NA and Europe will have to address their own birthrates if immigration dries up. That will require some social engineering. I think Japan is a pioneer in this, and likely Japanese policies (reduced housing costs, child care, etc) will be adopted by NA and Europe.
@@FC-xc3zy China is renewing passports again, without restrictions. This started soon after the zero covid policy was ended in November, 2023. To be fair, I also feared that the restrictions would be permanent, but that doesn't seem to be the case, at least for now.
Then india will need some 'freedom' by american.
@john doe..The birth rates in Europe and North America has been low for decades now and the numbers are increasing. Less and less people want to have babies because the cost of living is high and people in western nations are the epitome of individualiusm, consumerism and YOLO lifestyle. African nations are not all growing its some nations that are like Nigeria, Ethiopia, Niger, Congo DRC among others. People often use ''Africa'' as blanqet statement with out the nuances and multifacted aspects on the African continent. There is also a braindrain in Nigeria where alot of high educated and talented doctors and egineers are moving to places like the UK, Canada and US. Japan population decline has to do with their own societal physcology and development of being introvert anti-socials. Where many Japanese men are even afraid to approach women and women shy to even look at men but biologically want assertive men. Many men have go to go go bars to see young women in Anime clothing dance and act infantile or have relationship with androids. If that is not epitome of masculine degeneracy then i don't know.
@@onlineonlineaccount2368 Japan is it's own nut show for sure. However, the NEET and otaku culture has spread. First to China with "lie flat" and "let it rot", and then to NA with "men go their own way".
There is societal engineering at play. In China and NA home ownership is so pricey that some men feel they will never be stable enough to own a home, get married and start a family.
Here's some depressing stats. Married couples are the minority among NA adults (37.5% in Canada). 4/10 children are born to single mothers. In the black community, 76% of families are single parent (usually mother). Society is following Japan down the infertility rabbit hole.
I blame cost of living. Homes are 10 - 20x median income and cost of living is eating up the largest share of wages since the Great Depression era. The middle class is the new poor.
@@rollinghippo2940 India will be too big(almost impossible) of a bite to chew for America
The population would shrink by 48% and still be more than most countries across the world..
Why is this a concern!?
🙄
Its not the decrease in population that is a concern
Concern is dependency ratio more old people and less young people
Having a much smaller working population trying to support the much larger elderly population is a strain on the economy and the people in it.
Because it's not even across all ages, it's shrinking cause there's less births and that means less people who can work and pay taxes etc, you get too many old people who don't/can't work and fewer and fewer young people contributing to the economy. Not to mention that China's economy right now is very reliant on their surplus of workers for all the factories that make basically everything we use, factories are going to close due to the lack of young workers.
@@shubhamgarg09 you don't know what you're talking about
Fk u all leave us alone
Fertility rates in Taiwan are much healthier. Maybe try some of their politics and culture instead of trying to get them under the same politics and culture as mainland China. Same people I hear.
Not sure why news agencies always report population decline as a negative thing. We need more of it.
When the population declines in a particular town or city what happens to the economy? It goes into decline.
Then add in the national obligation to pay pensions and healthcare for an aging population with a declining number of workers paying taxes to finance those systems. The biggest protests Putin has ever faced occured when he raised the retirement age. And he's going to be forced to do it again. China faces a similar crises and much more.
Not because of population decline, but because of china. When china’s population grows, they don’t care; when western countries especially Nordic countries have population shrinkage, they don’t care as well. Only when china’s 1.4 billion population slightly decreases, they call it “crisis” lol😅
You need to understand what you are talking about. If population is declining, it means you do not have labour and productivity, rather people who the State or country must provide for. This is already affecting Western countries who are not trying to increase retirement age. If your population declines, it becomes a welfarist state with more people being supported than are those who are productive
It may not be a negative thing. We don't know. The only sustained period of depopulation was during the Black Death. We do know that rapid decline is a serous problem.
India has the biggest population
Wait a minute... They have always been overpopulated. The problem is??????
The problem is workers, which is a problem for wealthy people. For the average worker however, which after all are most people, this is great news.
The problem is dependency ratio
More old people less young people
The problem is they can't blame low wages on immigration like we do in the west, so they blame a low birth rate instead - you saw in the video having kids is a big thing in China, so it's an easy target. Even fewer workers in years to come and employers might have to pay a living wage to get them.
@@MrMakabar As a local resident , i can confirm that you are completely right, the decline of the population will force the wealthy to improve their industrial technology to face the problem of the lack of working people, which may bring a better result to the new generation in China

This is not that bad since technology can replace majority of cheap labor that required many people before. This may even push China into a more advanced economy. So you never know.
With that attitude you will never know. Ahahah.
Productivity increases occur regardless of the birth rate. A low birth rate will only lead to economic stagnation, which will discourage all types of investments needed to increase productivity (as in the case of Japan). It makes no sense to say that de-growth pressures can be compensated by increases in productivity because these are independent of the birth rate and are harmed by a lack of it.
@@pelayocf4558 If productivity was increasing regardless of the birth rates, like you say, then the CCP wouldn't make the birth rates a big deal (since they are growing regardless). You are contradicting yourself in the next sentence, you are separating economy-production and the reason for it (births and reproduction). Ahahah.
@@Ilusha77 This is not how the economy works, it is true that initially the fall in the birth rate causes a positive economic effect called demographic dividend as a result of a decrease in the proportion of the non-working population. These forgone expenditures can be used to invest and increase productivity. However, this effect lasts only a couple of decades and causes detrimental effects for the economy in the long run for the reasons I have already explained before.
@@pelayocf4558 You didn’t explain anything. You are just digging a hole even deeper for yourself. Not sure what's the objective of this reporting.
If it's about concerns of aging population I am very sure you can find much more concerning figure in Japan, South Korea, Europe and even US. In fact the againg population concerns should be even more serious in other countries because on average asians have better saving than many westerners therefore better prepared for old age.
On gender equality, just spend a bit more time in China you will see capable females have much better chance to rise in modern corporate China than many many countries I have seen. Any gender discrimination will be frowned on since many many years ago.
Bottom line, balanced reporting is essential in achieving mutual understanding and peace and we should all strive for it
South Korea and Japan, maybe, but I'm not sure how China's position is better than that of Europe and US. Europe and the US have higher fertility rates, migration to take the edge off, and are still _far_ richer in per capita terms than China. Chinese people save significantly more as a % of their disposable income, but Westerners have more income overall as well as national pension schemes and welfare states. And regardless, at a macro level you can't run an economy off household savings. Chinese households will have their savings invested predominantly in Chinese assets and companies - which means if the Chinese economy does poorly due to not enough workers, the savings of Chinese households will perform poorly as well.
Because Americans are afraid, and they have to use these things to bolster their collapsing leadership😂😂😂
china is safe until 2100, US is way worse than China. South Korea and Japan are gonna collapse first

At what point do they start blaming the West for that fertility problem?
It means China's GDP per Capita will increase.
What is happening is a population adjustment based on the future needs of society and is underway in many advanced societies.
People behave like a large organism that adapts to environmental conditions to survive.
The problem is that backward societies still have unsustainable and unrealistic demographic dynamics.
Yes, but for the wrong reasons. On the farm, children are needed for labour. In the cities, they are expensive furniture. Keep it simple, because it is.

China's population has decreased due to the Chinese running to other countries like USA, Canada, India, Australia and New Zealand. There the crime is high, housing crisis exists, and drug problems. And the international media remain silent and focus on half of the decline in population. The population has increased significantly in these countries. In Canada, pregnant Chinese citizens come to give birth in Canada and get Canadian citizenship. No government officials do a thing about it. Lottery tickets are given in China to come to Canada.
Population decline is a complex issue that can be influenced by various factors. While calling back all of Chinese population of 60 million people at the overseas may help alleviate the population decline of China to some extent, it is uncertain whether it can fully resolve the issue in the long term. It's also a big problem for other countries, lottery is not only for these Chinese who run out of China and also for these country so no government will do anything about it. Why refuse the people who work hard, pay the tax and tension?
I was thinking the same thing, seems like the chinese immigrants just give birth the same even if it's just one, although the higher and the richer one seems like not in the mood, I mean I get it though I would be too if I have that much money. Isn't everyone's dream to just travel and sleep without thinking about bills
Chinese immigrants in other countries will add up to a total of 60 million with the birth rate much higher than China's, the average number of children per family is 2-3, some having 4-5, I am Chinese living in America and more and more families here are choosing to have 3 children

@@beaversroastingbacon1679 china has many in rural areas that can be brought into big cities. It's their equivalent of immigration
This video has so strong Chinese accents, keep dreaming beats America in terms of economy
but china is far beyond us. It already saw this coming decades ago and began to use make their industries capital intensive by using more machinery for production to counter this issue. Thus, the population decline wont be much issue.
British population would be falling in the next two years if not for positive net immigration. Yet, politicians here are trying to curb immigration. What should the country do?
It really depends on the quality of the migrants for the sake of the country's stability and future prospect . I think the government is trying to attract high quality ones and curb the illegal immigrants.
I've been to the UK many times. Let me tell you one thing.
If you move to London, I fully support you in all your endeavors. But if you are coming to London to join a "gang" and hang out at 8PM carrying knives, politely, go back to where you came from.

actually china , japan ,south korea is on the way of AI adoption , robotics which means that robotic wotkers will outpace the human ones.
see even in china some restaurants are completely & partially automated so shrinking population will not be an issue .
Who shall represent the population of china? The people or the robots? And does the government acknowledge this?
I can’t wait when robot and ai unionize for better wages and representation, and they deserve to.
@saiana Yes, interesting point, but it's not clear yet what the net effect of this will be. It could actually make things worse. In western economies there is a great fear that robotics and especially AI will drastically reduce both the number and type of jobs available. There are so many jobs which will, partially, or completely, be replaced by AI systems. This may increase the productivity and profitability of individual commercial entities, but overall, it will decimate the job market. Remember, we need a big working base of people to pay taxes, so that pensions can be paid, and health care provided to an aging population. Many people, if they have jobs, will be able to help support parents/grandparents directly. Remember also, that it's much easier to tax working individuals, than it is to tax highly profitable companies. These kind of very high profit, high-tech companies have been proven very difficult to tax fairly or properly. Just look, for example, at the way Apple has managed to avoid paying taxes in every single jurisdiction it operates in. It has an absolutely huge slush fund which is not taxable in *any* jurisdiction. It's just ridiculous.
It's very difficult for me to see exactly how AI and robotics will actually make things better for the majority of the population. I may be wrong, but I think they will end up poorer, and find themselves living in an even more unequal society.
@@richardconway6425 don’t worry about it too much, you’re not in control. The best thing to hope for is that you’ll be atomized into material resource for the paper clip maximizing AI.
