Pearl cotton comes in different sizes depending on the thickness of the thread. I’ve used #5 on needlepoint canvas. A smaller size might be necessary for embroidery depending on the fabric being used.
The ideal for working with the floss, is that the floss will fully cover the fabric it lays over, like the Aida cotton hole. Generally that is two or three strands, depending on the material. Because the floss is twisted, separating the strands allows each strand to untwist to its accurate tension. The best way to accomplish that is the dampen each strand and allow it to fully untwist, then put it next to its pair. Then while laying the stitches down, use a stiletto to lay the stitches on top so that they lay neatly side by side as you finish pulling the thread through from the top side. All of these steps allow the floss to puff up slightly after the thread is laid in place and more fully cover the fabric. There is an item available called “The Stripper”. It is a thimble with a small absorbent pad on the tip that easily lets you pull one strand of floss at a time, untwisting and dampening it slightly as you do. I always add a tiny amount of white vinegar to my dampening water too, as despite claims to the otherwise, some darker colored floss will sometimes bleed and this will help to alleviate that problem.
I just love how you look so happy to be doing this series. It's like watching someone grow and blossom into their own. I'm so proud of you Natalie!!
You are so special Natalie!!!
For all the cross-stitching I used to do, I never knew that tip about the label number! Thanks!
Hooray for you Natalie-you are definitely your mama’s daughter!!😊
Thank you so much
I was taught to separate the strands one by one and then put two or more together. It helps keep the threads from tangling as you stitch.
Love your info on embroidery it’s been years since I have done embroidery so I am looking forward to your feedback 🤪
You're a doll. Thanks for the beginner embroidery series - just what Ive been looking for
Nice to know the tips
I enjoy these videos and really enjoy my round bag that has everything especially the book
I learned when doing petit point never to have a too long thread. 😀

Thanks for sharing
Love this.
Never knew the trick about which end to pull the strand to prevent tangling!
I ordered the kit, can't wait to get it!
I know, it feels like it's taking forever, plus mine has to travel to Australia. Excited🎉🎉🎉
I would like to see the inside of the new embroidery kit and what comes in it.
You should develope a ribbon embroidery curriculum. Also, develope a group of ribbon embroidery products.
I bought a tackle box and keep my thread in it. It came with the same tote boxes and was cheaper.
What type/size needles do you use? Haven’t done embroidery yet, I do cross stitch
Ms. Natalie. For newbies explain why you separate the dmc thread. Does it pertain to the hole size or space on your fabric ex. Aida 18?

@@megstaton6990, great info, thanks!
How long should your thread be when embroidering.
The thread should be no longer than 18" for embroidering, hand quilting, or hand sewing. This is to help keep the thread from knotting.
Got a kit for kids 10+ y/o?
