Thanks Peter, for the spread sheet. Now to get my mind to move from factions of inches to millimeters and centimeters. I thought working for 32 years working with 64ths and 32nds of an inch was bad. I am hoping that the old adage that you can teach an old dog new tricks is for real. You have been an inspiration. Even purchased several mm measuring tapes and a couple of combo tapes with both metric and inch.
Hi Peter. Been watching all your videos in the last few days. Really inspire me to do better quality and accurate woodworking. Thank you so so much for the cut list too. Gonna make my life a lot easier now. Keep up your amazing work.
Peter - I downloaded this, I guess 3 years ago when you published it. I have TV / bookcase thing to make for my home (2.5m high and 4m wide, so quite big) and used this for the first time. It was perfectly easy to use. I only had trouble printing the cut list at at a size I could read as I am a doofus at Excel. Thanks for this. I hope 'retirement' is going well, even in lockdown.
I use a similar spreadsheet, that I then copy and paste into a program called cutlist plus, to optimise the panels and components. Every little bit helps with efficiency I find. Love your videos.
Love all the videos Peter great work. Would love to see a video on your router table set up. Seems very effective the way you use it. Could do with one in my own small shop. Keep up the great work. David
David Woods Thanks! Yes, I'm very happy with the router table/bench for the way I use it, works really well - probably in par with the Festool MFT cutting table i.e. when you're not using it, it just reverts to being a bench! I have a 'shop tour' video planned, and will be dwelling on the routing end of things, for sure 👍Cheers, Peter
Thanks Peter, nice work! I have to ask though and I know that @kevinherring79 asked the same question about the cabinet depth now shouldn't the complete 'depth' of the cabinet be from the backside of the 'backing' panel to the front of the facet/front? which means you should take the depth input and deduct the backing thickness and the thickness of the door and if you use blum hinges then they should be set 1.5mm proud of the carcass so that the door opens without touching the side panels and that also would raise the question of what if there is an edging? that then should all be deducted so lets say 550mm total depth - 6mm (backing) - 1.5mm (unspoken hinge space) - edge thickness(optional lets just say 1mm) - door thickness of 18mm which works out to 523.5mm? that's your sides and base "CUT" size after all it is a CUTTING list! Or am I completely missing something here? Please advise. Thank you!
Was looking a simple 'sheet' to calculate shelf spacing. Basically take opening of cabinet and number of shelves (& thickness) and working out spacing. height - shelves*thickness / shelves+1 This would give you a spacing, you can then you can make a spacer from scrap and work from that...
Old vid, but thanks! If the door is in a run of cabinets, or the cabinet butted up against a wall or ceiling you’ll want a small gap around it. I’lll be doing a door spacing video soon. 👍👍
Hi peter. I have found your fantastic ,easy and enthusiastic content so encuraging and informative. You have given my the confidence to crack on with my own projects. Is is possible to beg, steel or buy this simple spreadsheet please and how would I go about doing so. Yours Chris
Hi Chris. Mine’s a little bit convoluted tbh and you’re probably better off doing one of your own, but happy to give. You a copy as a starting point if you like. I’ll see if I’ve ever posted a version online anywhere - this is quite old now and I honestly can’t remember- but in the meantime shoot me an email - channel name(at) gmail.com - so I can keep track, OK? 👍👍
Hi Peter, thanks for sharing this. I'm a bit confused though, and given no one else has mentioned it, I'm guessing it must be me! If you have sides that are 520 deep and then slap a 6mm back panel on it, the total depth will be 526mm. Shouldn't the sides (and top and base) be 520 - 6 = 514mm deep? 🤔
Getting myself in a right muddle with this for some reason. Should the formula in D14 for example be divided by 2 before the rails/styles & groove are taken away? (i.e. =D12/2-(2*F12)). This would also be the case for the panel calculation in D16? Sorry if it's a stupid question it's late and I'm all confused!
Hi Adrian. I don’t have the spreadsheet in front of me right now, but the short answer is that you shouldn’t have to muck about with the formulae at all, unless you want to make changes to what the sheet does. From memory, the only cells you should interact with are the ones with a grey fill. I also go through using the spreadsheet in the video, with a sample. It should be straightforward - you put in the cabinet dimensions & thickness of the board and it works out the sizes for you. For the panel door you need to add the rail/stile depth, and the groove depth for the panel calc. Let me know where you’re getting stuck, OK?
The calculation for me on this makes just 1 big door that covers the whole area. Dividing the calculation by 2 on the rails and the panel would make it into two separate doors (I think?), as long as I put on the cut list 4 x rails/stiles? Sorry for being a pain, trying to send it to get cut.
The clue’s in the title: “single cab” ie a single cabinet, not a double. So yes, it’s for a single door. To make a double cabinet, you’ll need to divide the cabinet width by 2 and use that as the basis for the doors. 👍
Two questions Pete ,one is the groove depth for both side on the panel and two what no standard measurements for us multi choice north Americans .,signed converting metric to standard Canada...lol
great video Peter! ive wanted someting like this for ages, can you link or send me the excel version ? I have the full office package and use it extensivly, but find google sheets a little unhelpful. cheers Graham
Instructions are on the big grey panel covering the spreadsheet. Also in the video description. You don’t need permission, you just need to ‘save as’ it ‘copy to’ 👍
Hi. Sorry, I don't really understand the question. Four sides? As in a top & base, left & right? This is designed to help build an alcove unit, so a cabinet at the base, bookcase above, all the same width. If you just want to use the bookcase, then you need to put the width in as the cabinet width, as all calculations are made from that .Thanks! P
+James Francis Ah Ok, I see what you mean. No, that’s not what this worksheet was meant to do, you’d have to do that manually e.g. let the spreadsheet Donita thing, then subtract the combined thickness of the dividers and divide by 3; with 2 dividers you’d end up with 3 shelves, yes?? But no easy way to incorporate that into my spreadsheet I’m afraid.

+James Hi. My little 2D plans are done in an old copy of Omnigraffle. I should upgrade to something else, or learn how to use sketchup properly, but there’s a lot of muscle-memory to combat after so long! All I really want is a simple drawing package that can work to scale, but everything else I’ve looked at seems like wanna-be CAD; I want up down, left right, not X and Y axis. So yeah, still using omnigraffle... 👍
