"Doctor, my eyes \ Cannot see the sky \ Is this the prize \ For having learned how not to cry?" -- Jackson Browne wrote "Doctor My Eyes". It was big hit in 1972 that stood out on the radio for me when I was a little kid. Dig how the guitar solo resembles tears falling, fits and starts at first, building towards a wail. The bass line really grooves in the chorus too. David Crosby and Graham Nash sang the backup vocals and Jesse Ed Davis played lead guitar. Browne wrote the song in 1971. The years he sings about could well be the late 1960's filled with wars, riots, and assassinations, take your pick. Jackson Browne also wrote the Eagle's classic "Take It Easy" together with Glenn Fry. When you're ready for more from him, check out "Fountain of Sorrow" and "Late For The Sky" among many others. Also check out Linda Ronstadt's cover of the Jackson Browne classic, "Rock Me on the Water", with Glenn Frey on guitar and Don Henley on drums. Brilliant!

Now your talking about a huge catalog of music. "Somebody's Baby", "The Pretender", "Running On Empty", "The Load Out/Stay" and they just keep coming from this singer/ songwriter.

Best bass playing I ever heard, and Jesse Ed Davis on guitar - wow, not to mention the Crosby and Nash harmonies!

He's lived with his eyes wide open. He's seen injustices without hiding... while others have looked the other way. He asks the doctor if he's kept his eyes open too long...if there's something wrong with him.

Wanted to credit everyone on this track because it's a who's who of great session musicians and recognized artists (via Wiki) "Jesse Ed Davis played the electric guitar (including a much-lauded solo) in the track, while David Crosby and Graham Nash sang backing vocals. Russ Kunkel played drums and Leland Sklar played bass." "Ruhlmann of AllMusic called it "a rollicking pop/rock song about being almost terminally burnt out." I think that sums it up nicely. One of my favorite karaoke songs, too.

The legendary bass player Leland Sklar played bass on this song. He has his own YT channel where he shows how he played it. If you like bass guitar, it's worth a look. Very interesting guy who has played with many of the greats and is features on some famous albums.

You got that exactly right, Angela, extremely bright, uplifting music, but there’s a serious lyric behind it… doctor, my eyes… tell me what is wrong? Was I unwise to leave them open for too long?
We all fantasize about driving down the coastal highway in California with the radio blasting… well in 1991, I did happen to be driving there, and THIS song came on the AM radio in my car… a couple years ago a friend asked me if I’d ever driven through Santa Barbara, I said I don’t think so… but I checked the map, and I had… then I pulled out my logbook of the 1991 trip… and just where it should have said Santa Barbara, it said instead “Doctor My Eyes”…

You have stumbled upon one of the greatest singer/song writter of our time. His portfolio of work is extensive. Any of the songs off of his 1st 5 or 6 albums were outstanding. I know you like "story tellers", try the tune "ready or not" or the song he wrote @ age 15, "These Days"

Interesting. I have never considered this song as a happy-go-lucky dance song. I've never seen someone interpret it that way. Anyway, I've always love the song and the lyrics are quite meaningful. At least I thought so.

Angela...love it when you react to Jackson Browne...but it reminds me that you didn't hear "Running on Empty" in its entirety ...you missed hearing the last 45 seconds or so...an amazing guitar ending. In my opinion, that particular clip butchered the song.
