I was feeling overwhelmingly sad for them until another friend pointed out that they may have checked out intentionally at this time to go spiritual and continue to help us down here (as angels). Speaking as a resident of Asheville, North Carolina, you really hit the nail on the head. In disaster type events, people show you who they really are. Their masks fall off and some surrender to fear. It’s important to remember in these situations to love thy Neighbor. That does not mean you have to like your neighbor. It boils down to patience and grace. Patience and grace are directly correlated with self-awareness and personal accountability. To me, failure is not doing anything, not even making an attempt. But planning, working on something, and taking the necessary actions that wind up not being the solution is not failure. It’s just not the right way for the individual or individuals to proceed. Giving up and/or doing nothing is the only failure.
