This is genius! Thank you Mariana! Realizing how long tasks are taking me is the way for me. I tired calendar blocking but I always had things come up that would ruin my plans anyway, because I have a young baby. This is the way to go to realize how many things I’m actually able to do on average during a day. Thanks for this!!!
Great great video. Thanks. I think it is one of the best videos on time-blocking I've ever seen. What youcall reverse time-blocking is nothing but time-tracking. You have many tools on the market for that, but doing it in your calendar app is also a good idea. Me I didn't find a tool that fits well my time-tracking needs. So I designed a special webapp for that. I have some issues with my current task and calendar management app. I will take a look at Akiflow.
I do a combination of the two which I would welcome your thoughts. Although my role is very reactive, I find if I don't at least plan and time block to do certain tasks that they never get completed. Inevitably as you mention things crop up which mean a task may take two hours longer so I go back and extend the existing block to the time it actually took as a reference for the future.
I've been using this method for months, I didn't know at all that it was a method separate from time blocking, it's just how my brain works and by doing it like this, I can analyze my schedule every Friday evening to check if I am using my time well each week, for work, for school, for my personal activities and my hobbies, adjusting the time slots afterwards if necessary, I am not stressed to follow my job time when I simply cannot, and due to my workload which is very variable from day to day and meetings constantly moving I cannot be limited by a calendar.
Thank you for a good video. What you call reverse calendar blocking seems to me to be logging *actual* time spent, and then using that to provide realistic calendar block(s) for tasks and projects in the future. Am I missing something, or is that essentially what you are saying? Thanks.
I have the same comment. I think it is that. This is also called time-tracking. You have many tools on the market for that, but doing it in your calendar app is also a good idea. Me I didn't find a tool that fits well my time-tracking needs. So I designed a special webapp for that.
Thanks - makes sense. When I have time tracked before it's on a note page (analogue), but never on a calendar - will try it on a calendar on my laptop.
omg haha what a coincidence! I feel suffocated and unproductive under the blocking system. So instead I use google calendar to log and journal my work instead of planning my work. I usually determine a buckets of tasks, a direction, or some tangible goals at the end of the day/week, and let my energy take me to whereever. I will color-code my small steps towards a certain goal like "DAY 1 Learning Git", "DAY2 setting up my workspace" and assign a color to it. I will do them to drawing, writing, and other concurrent goals respectively. I'll take break and exercise when I need to, and log them in green. After a week I can look at a wall of color and get a sense of what I have accomplished and what workload is the best for me. And I will plan my next week's buckets of tasks accordingly without feeling overwhelmed.

You can also think about a time-tracking app.
Great information Mariana as always ❤🙏
This channel deserves 1 M subscribers .
I like the app Structured for this, it syncs with Google calendar, too! Makes it easy to just drag and drop your activities into the day.
I really enjoy your flexible and sustainable approach to productivity, it helps a lot 💞 In the end, the best tools are the tools that work for you.
Thanks so much! 😊

It sounds like an excellent alternative to journaling where work or time-dependent activities are concerned. Thank you.

I didn't understand what reverse calendar blocking is from this video. Can you explain how this method works?
Just awesome!!
I mentally feel trapped with time blocking. However I do block in what I spent time doing so I can see where I spent my time.
Wow 😍
