  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Certification body of India that issues BIS licenses to the manufacturers and importers for various products comes under #BIS voluntary or mandatory certification schemes. BIS certification is a third-party assurance of the product's quality, the consumer's security, and the trustworthiness of BIS. The government of India established the Bureau of Indian Standards under the BIS Act, 1986, under the supervision of the Indian Ministry of Consumer Protection, Food, and Public Distribution.
    Basic Requirements for BIS Certification
    The following are the basic requirements for obtaining a BIS license, as listed below.
    • The product must meet the Indian Standard Specification criteria.
    • BIS license is only given to the factory (manufacturer of finished products), not to the Distributor/Retailer.
    • If a manufacturer has multiple factories, each of which is located at a distinct geographical address, the #business must file a separate application for each product and factory location.
    • The laboratory should be fully equipped with product testing equipment as well as qualified quality control personnel to test the product in accordance with the applicable ISS.
    • All production machinery and testing facilities should be located on the factory premises as per ISS norms and respective SIT.

    India is the second-largest producer of food in the world - that does not only make India the highest consumer of food but a contributor too. However, as a matter of fact, the degraded quality of food can cause serious harm. That’s why the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has made the ISI mark for food products.
    How is a BIS certification is applicable to food products?
    Well, the answer to your question is that - a BIS certification is applicable to distinct food products, yet is only products like Follow-up formula - complementary foods; processed cereal-based complementary foods; Milk-based hexane foods; Milk powder, and more fall under the mandatory certification scheme list.     There are some food and food related products which are mandatory for BIS certification
    • IS 15757 - Follow-up formula -complimentary foods
    • IS 11536 - Processed cereal based complementary foods
    • IS 1165 - Milk-powder
    • IS 12176 - Condensed milk, partly skimmed and skimmed condensed milk
    • IS 13334 (Part 1) - Skimmed milk-powder, standard grade
    • IS 14433 - Infant milk substitutes
    • IS 14542 - Partly skimmed milk powder
    IS 1165:2022 for whole milk powder
    This standard specifies the requirements, sampling methods, and tests for milk powder. The material shall be white or white with a greenish tinge or light cream in colour. It must be free of scorched particles and lumps except those that break up easily under slight pressure. It must also be free from extraneous material. The flavour of the product or reconstituted milk must be pleasant and clean.
    Milk Powder is a material made by spray drying of standardised milk obtained from fresh cow milk, buffalo milk, or a mixture of the two. Standardised milk must be free from additives. All processing and drying should be done to minimise loss of nutritive value, particularly protein quality.
    The product shall be manufactured and packed under hygienic conditions as per IS 2491. All processing equipment should be thoroughly cleaned, and precautions should be taken to avoid infestation. A laboratory that is adequately equipped and staffed to carry out the various tests specified in the specification in accordance with the methods specified in the standard.
