My Homebrew Ice Goddess is more focused on Survival of the Cold rather than Suffering in the Cold. Chaotic Neutral and respects those who Survive and Thrive in the Tundra.
I think that cold weather is regarded as evil because for a super long time, there would be high chances of death for all creatures, with the lack of food, and the chances of freezing to death
The Ring of Winter novel is #5 in the Harper series - probably a difficult find. There's also a choose-your-own-adventure book in the D&D Endless Quest series called Into the Jungle that deals with Artus Cimber and the Ring of Winter in Chult.
Also, as stated in the 5e Tomb of Annihilation adventure module, if the ring was given to Titania, the summer queen of the Feywild, the ring would thaw into water and be destroyed.
I read Ring of Winter! It's a good book, proper adventure story akin to King Solomon's Lost Mines...only problem is it takes SIX CHAPTERS to get to Chult. But once you get there you get a lot of cool stuff about Chult. How the natives live there, their relationship with the dinosaurs, the Barea and Ras Nsi. A good book, I do recommend it.
Hmmm, do you think the Ring of Winter will make an appearance in Rime of the Frost Maiden? It's been mentioned twice in two campaigns, and from what little I've heard of the upcoming compaign, it sounds like what would happen if the frost giants got ahold of the Ring.
Love the video! I'm always excited for more Jorphdan Lore! Lol Now, I'm obligated (like always) to ask for those individual Daleland videos! Shadowdale, Battledale, Daggerdale, etc! I'm just gunna keep aaaaaasking! Lol. Thanks, as always, in advance and keep up the great content, Jorphdan!
Jordan, your timing could not be better with releasing this. I am running two games of Tomb right now, and I was thinking of how badly I needed to read up on this.
I used the Ring of Winter in my campaign. I had my party destroy the ring because the Church of Auril wanted it in Luskan, as well as the Frost Giants.
A character that I played once found the ring of winter in the prologue of a campaign. He did not know what this ring was so he returned it to the man on a white dragon that was searching for it nearby as he had lost it. That man's name was Artus.
There is a pre-5th edition writeup of the Ring in 2nd edition Volo's Guide to All things Magical! Which I would use for any edition before the reliease of 5th!
I really wish there were more artifacts/sentient items that *aren't* evil. I understand the fact that more evil forces, devils/demons/evil gods/etc, have a bit more of a reason to leave these things laying around in the material plains to collect souls and whatnot. But you'd think the forces of good would try their damndest to stay on some sort of equal footing
@@Jorphdan the original ring of winter in 2E was good aligned. The novel did a good explanation as to why its alignment was actually good. I guess having a ring that powerful for good character was considered unbalanced, so they changed it for 5e.
It could be the ring of cold from Mhzentl but, changed by the evil goddess of cold when she wore it. Like when Mhzentl might have been sucked into the ring of T'shala.
Hey man, I was just thinking of you! Do you have a discord we can chat on? I really wanna talk to you about my campaign, but don't want to bug or pester you. :p
@@testtest648 It takes place AFTER Ring of Winter, it's closer to 5e DnD current timeline. It's a good book for fauna and flora in Chult, the author did a good job describing just how hellish the jungle is. It also immediately starts you off at Chult with flashbacks taking you back to mainland Faerun. They also delve into the Albino Dwarves, something Ring of Winter didn't do at all...but the problem is there is no mention of Mezro or any of the events that happend in it. No Batiri Goblins either. However it reads/listens very well, the main characters are amazing and their banter top notch and it will give you more ideas about Chult. Deffo worth a read.

ToA SPOILERS: Alissanda is with the other Ba'Rae in Ubtao's demiplane of paradise, has been since the spell plague. Artus has been looking for her for some time now. In ToA, it is revealed that the only way Mezro for return is Ras Nsi dying.
Some of your sources got it wrong or omitted a bunch of stuff. It's been a while since I read the ring of winter but I remember a bunch of things surrounding the history of the ring didn't happen that way. Like Rayburton wasn't the one who had the ring and that story about him using it was actually about someone else who's trail he followed to Chult in a similar way to Artus. He was actually just an explorer chasing it like Artus, hence why they got along well, but gave it up when he became a bare and over time his story got mixed with the other guy who actually brought it to Chult. I may be wrong about that and it was Rayburton the whole time, but the ring was actually given to the king of Mezro to protect, by whoever the person in the story is about because he couldn't handle the evil, but thinking a paladin king could. Also the king eventually used it, because he fell out of favor with Ubtao for some unclear reason and lost his longevity. The king gives it up to Artus in the end of the book to save the city. Also side note, Artus's travelling companion Hydel Pontifax was a noble but he was a wizard so the knight depiction was not the best choice.
My players had to recovered the Ring of Winter from Xandara who stole it from Artis Cimber....then they sold it to a lich, still trying to figure out what to do with that.
if the ring can be destroyed by the queen of summer then that makes me think it was originally made by the Winter queen... this will at least be true in my game

".. probably crafted using magic." - if I had a nickel for every time I've said that in a game . . .
Note that the current FR year is 1491ish. So if Artus got it in 1363 DR then he has been the same age for only 130ish years, not 1200 years.
I was there, Jorphdan, I was there 1200 years ago, when the strength of men failed...
Sounds like there was a typo in his script.
@@anthonyalexander8886 or got Artus and the previous owner(Sir Raysumthin) mixed up.
This was a good vid. I do wish the cold wasn't associated with evil so much, however, but that might just be me melting in the summer heat.

The cold never bothered me....
Any extremities of temperature are regarded as evil, because it's deadly.
I think that cold weather is regarded as evil because for a super long time, there would be high chances of death for all creatures, with the lack of food, and the chances of freezing to death
Hard agree. Same feeling with fire and its seemingly necessary connection to Devils
Also, the ring can only be destroyed if placed on the finger of Queen Titania
Destory the ring get a wife sounds like a win win?

Bro I’ve literally running tomb of annihilation right now and the PCs just found Artus Cimber and Dragonbait
I took one look at Artus and decided to throw the entire concept of that overpowered DMPC in the trash.
Riesenfriese the book, i believe, explicitly says that Artus will not want to travel with the party because he doesn’t want to endanger them.

I concur, Ring of Winter is a great read. It is a fun pulp read, like a light hearted Indiana Jones story, or Conan type story.
I'm not sure I could call it a great read, but it's very much a fun read and it did get me interested in Chult, so win win. :)
@@halcyons2106 I highly recommend the Crown of Thorns, its the other Chult book. It reads a lot faster and has a good plot.

Something cold related, and unintentional. Use the ring too much you turn into unbreakable ice for 100 years.
