Named in tribute to the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist and his influence in introducing Eastern culture and music into the world of Western rock and roll, the Brian Jonestown Massacre formed in San Francisco, California in 1990. Some 40 different members passed through the group"s ranks over the next half of the decade, but throughout their focal point remained singer/guitarist Anton Newcombe, who along with bassist Matt Hollywood, guitarist Dean Taylor, organist Mara Keagal, accordionist Dawn Thomas, drummer Brian Glaze and Spokesman for the Revolution Joel Gion recorded the Massacre"s 1995 shoegazer-influenced debut LP Methodrone. A collection of early recordings, Spacegirl and Other Favorites, followed on the band"s own Tangible label in early 1996, and was the first of four Brian Jonestown Massacre LPs to appear that year; next up was the brilliant Their Satanic Majesties" Second Request, a full-blown homage to the Stones" glorious psychedelic-era excesses. Recorded live in the studio, the grittier Take It From the Man! found the band exploring even broader territory; finally, the year ended with the release of Thank God for Mental Illness, a showcase for strong country and blues leanings. In 1997, the BJM -- now consisting of Newcombe, Hollywood, Gion, Taylor, guitarists Jeff Davies and Peter Hayes, and drummer Brad Artley -- resurfaced with Give It Back! Upon signing to TVT, they released Strung Out in Heaven the following year, but the band and Newcombe"s eccentricities kept them from staying on the label. After a few scattered EPs, they resurfaced in 2001 with Bravery Repetition and Noise, distributed by Bomp. And This Is Our Music followed in 2003. Despite a continued lack of major distribution, the Brian Jonestown Massacre earned the largest profile of its career in 2004, when it became the unlikely focus of an award-winning documentary, DIG!, which charted the trials of Newcombe and those of his rival, Courtney Taylor, leader of the Dandy Warhols. We Are the Radio: The Mini Album followed in August 2005. Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
Dan is a superb drummer, love his vibe man!
The best intro to a concert ever...
This is my fav. I consider it to be within the Pantheon of concert intros.
@@jaystubbs1355 i've watched a lot of BJM shows online, as must fans have -- thiis one stood out as steller -- I think there's a backsory. He doesn't talk to cowd at all -- a rarity given the rants he's unleashed over the years and especially last years. This remains my all time favorite online BJM show -- the encoure, Hide and Seek just takes off like a B52. Great stuff. Too bad, Australia is also where he gave dreadful shows in 23 and bottomed out on alcoholism -- I hope you'll give him another chance...Sober, he's on fire.
also, I think this ,may be among the first shows after he quit drinking. He seems serious and nervous -- but deep and heavy....and he has dispensed with the onstage rants. He finalluy just shits up and plays....
This is 2010 -- this is a far different Anton than the one who put out Who Killed Sgt Pepper a few months or a year earlier.
I always wondered why Matt Hollywood rejoin the band for this tour -- I mean, Matt's OK, but, just saying..IMO his best work with this band was when he played reckless bass.....I like Cabin Fever - FINALLY.....I had to listen to it 1000 times to make sure it wasn't just a load of crap....I was satisfied it was not --
Anyway, my hunch was that asking him back was a SOBER gesture of kindness for all the shit he gave that guy......Also, the encore -- Hide and Seek. It's hands down the best version I've heard with the Smiths rap -- or screaming -- at the end. I can tell he really meant it that night. Notice: He even smiles slyly at the band and nods his head in approval afterward. That about as much "good job" talk you're gonna get from him. Sorry the last tour ended so bad in Australia -- where he made such good music here -- It's all about the booze. I like sober Anton. I recoil from the drunk Anton .
But it's the SONGS man......yeah, but the song isn't so great after you've been called a CUNT before he starts it and then expects you to like it. The thing is, I DID.
I've noticed he can make me so angry and annoyed - -and I'm just watching it on youtube! Pity the crowd. But.....As soon as he starts playing another song, all the tension and drama of the previous rant sessions goes away -- until the song ends... rinse, repeat, rinse repeat --
I was there. The intro stood out as special - really set the mood and it being a relatively unknown tune made it such an amazing bonus. Here’s to the good ol’ days
Amazing!
Straya and one of the best bands known to man
