Hi all, long time no speak! Looking to make more content around extended range/ baritone guitars and share the knowledge I've gained over the last 8 years odd I don't know what would be beneficial to you all though... Do you have any questions you want answers to? Maybe it'll become a new video!
Why am I even watching this video?? I can barely play with 6 strings properly... and somehow I think I could try to play with 7 and 8 strings! PS: Thanks for the video :)
Well, sooner or later I think I'm gonna try... Harley Benton guitars look good and aren't too expensive, so in case I won't use them as much as I think I could, it won't be a bad investment... best scenario, it can open a new door on new sounds and inspirations.
That's a good way to look at it.. I think a lot of the time people get caught up in how extended range should be used or how everyone else uses it and don't experiment themselves. You could have 8 of the same string tuned to the same note if you really want and there's nothing wrong with that, no matter what snobs may say!
I've been doing music for almost 30 years now, and still, the more I learn, the more I realise how little I actually know in comparison to some experts, artists, engineers, producers and geniuses in their respective categories. It kind of force to be quite humble to how we approach the music as a whole. Snobing someone because of his/her gear, his/her setup, his/her skills or way to make music is definitely not something that will help anyone. Therefore, I won't do it and won't care about people that would do it, to me or to anyone else. So don't worry about that, I'm seeking for info and to see what others can do with 7 and 8 strings, but in the end, I think I will just do like I did with every other instruments so far: Just experiment by myself. Even if in a long run, it could also be bad to only stay in my own thing, because it could limit myself (like I often do). That's why now I want to try new challenges... and having 1 or 2 more strings seems like a complete new world. Maybe I'm just fooling myself, but as said, it won't a bad huge investment... Thanks again for your video!
90% of guitar is like wanking, by you're self lol untill you have enough eh.. experience to be in the right place? lol I donno haha >.< I have been playing for about 15 years, went strait from 6 to 8 string 4 years ago and I frikin LOVE my 8 string now but it took AGES to get comfortable with it for me and year after year I wish I went with a 7 string for quite a number reasons, My recommendations is to start with a (Atleast 26.5'' for) 7 string with a coil split for tripin' out. I'm just about to get my first 7string actually and it has 25.5" for treble and 27.8" for bass side for dat slap. Oh and not one person in this world gives two shits about snobs, just be you and have fun -wining at life.
Nice intro vid mate. I've got a Schekter Hellraiser. Superb axe, one of the very few for lefties. Wouldn't be without it now. Running Ernie Ball Cobalt 7 string set but had to use a standard .870 for the bottom E. Rips holes in the gates of Hell...
How about string bending? My biggest gripe. 10 gauge high e with 27 inch scale. Bending a full step can be...painful. and using 9 gauge sounds weak. That was the revelation I got from my first 8 string. If ya want it to play and sound good in the normal guitar range then fanned fret is a must.
Solution: Multiscale and "Light Top Heavy Bottom" string sets! Multiscale means less tension on the higher strings while still getting the right tension on the lower strings. Light Top Heavy Bottom strings have lighter guage (think a set of 9's) for the treble side and heavier guage (think a set of 11's) for the bass side of the guitar. With those two things at your disposal, you should really get the full effect of that double whammy and be able to comfortably solo and bend to your heart's desire while maintaining good tension for those djenty bits on the 7th and 8th strings. Especially if you lack a multiscale guitar, you should seriously check out light top heavy bottom strings, and possibly even consider getting a set for 6 strings and just buying the 7 and 8 strings seperately from a maker like cleartone or D'Addario.
+Aspirative Music Production they take a little while but my hands are used to the size of an 8 now. A fan fret would take even less time as they higher strings have the scale length similar to 6 strings!
So, I’m looking at a few axes to play Slipknot and Sleep Token with, because i’m getting pretty into low heavy stuff and wanna play it. I don’t think a regular old manson 6-string with a dropper pedal is quite going to cut it for this case. I’m looking at the Jackson Soloist 8-string that IV plays, and the 7 string headless Ormsby Goliath GTR. Which would be better off to roll with?
Would a 27" scale length be able to go down to D#, A#, F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, C# (high to low) alright? And if so, what string size do you think would be best for that tuning? I'm looking to get the Ibanez RG8, and that tuning and drop F are probably what I'll play on the most.
Hey dude, Your tuning (apart from the C#) is a whole step up from what I have mine in so a 27" will handle that fine. You may find the low C# a bit loose though; I've recently gotten a Schecter 8 string with a 28" scale that lets the note ring better. My tuning is (high to low): C#, G#, E, B, F# C#, G# C# On my RG8, the strings i use are: 11, 16, 24w, 34, 46, 64, 80, 105 so you could use that and have slightly tight strings or go a little lighter on each for your slightly higher tuning. Hope that helps!
I have some questions related to the video: Could I keep a 27" normal fretted 8 string in standart tuning (which is F# I believe), and wouldn't it be too tight? My second question is I would like to play play some lower stuff aswell as I love fast leads. Is it possible to shred on an 8 string? (Oh and how does the bending feels like)
Hey dude, This is all down to your string tension really. 27" is pretty much the standard (for Ibanez at least) for 8 strings and they'll handle the 8 string standard tuning. Tosin Abasi dropped his F# to an E on his Ibanez's which were all 27" as far as I'm aware. You can still shred on an 8 string for sure, once you adapt to the bigger frets. Bending again will depend on your tuning and string tension - it's definitely doable though for sure. What tuning would you like to use?
Standard tuning is doable, at least on a 26.5” 7 string, so I have a bit less tension. I would recommend going with 9s, and honestly, that’s too tight for me (that’s why I’m looking at multiscale), but I’m bloody lazy, and I don’t want to put *any* effort into bending
Imll be real here, just use real light strings, you’ll be fine, & I mean like *extra* light strings, scale length doesn’t make too too much of a difference aside from clarity with tension but if you’re a little short it’s good to go slightly thicker guage & if you’re a little long it best to go as light as possible. That all being said I’d personally recommend the 27” for versatility as it seems like a good midpoint as if you’re playing clean stuff you might get interested in trying to combine a bass guitar + guitar tuning with something like drop E or drop A with a low E (infant annihilator uses that on their 8 string stuff) while still having access to that F# standard
I've now got a 28" Schecter Blackjack A8 which I've tuned the 8th string to a C#1; I reckon with the right string gauge a D1 would be no problem. Have a look at my latest video if you're curious because I play it a bit! (link: ruclips.net/video/CffMCPMoTtY/видео.html)
Hi, thanks for the tips! I have a doubt and I think you could be just the right person to help me out: I am willing to buy my first 8 string but am undecided between the HB fan-fret and the Ibanez RG8. Which would you recommend? Thanks again!
+Zeone no problem! I'd say they're of a similar level, with the RG8 having an advantage on quality control and hardware used. Harley Benton will exchange guitars if you get a bad one though but still might be safer to get a good feel for a budget 8 string with the Ibanez. You won't really be making a bad decision either way as long as you're aware of what you're potentially getting!
A 28" Schecter will Handle drop E easily. I use mine in drop D nowadays with the Ernie Ball 8 string heavy top skinny bottom sets and the tension is really good! If you decide later however you want to go tune lower then it'll start to struggle coping.
Hi. I am looking at buying an ibanez RG8 soon and I would like to play lots of meshuggah on it. What sort of affordable amp setup would work best for their sort of music? (Under $1000 is all I have available to spend on an amp setup) thank you very much for your help.
Err I'd struggle to answer that properly as from what I've seen they use all sorts of amps in the studio, especially on the Violent Sleep of Reason. Any kind of modern metal amp should be able to pull off something similar through tweaking the EQ settings on the head. I own a Laney Ironheart 60w head and cab which I can get some great sounds from that cost me about £800 brand new. Not overly sure on the tuning Meshuggah uses but their signature guitar has a longer scale length than the rg8 by nearly 2 and a half inches. You may find the notes on an rg8 may be muddier and not ring as clear due to the scale length difference. Hope that helps somewhat!
Zeke Furness ok, thank you. I was speaking to some people and they said that some amps might have their speakers blown by using an eight string. Would you worry about this or think it'd be fine? What factory tuning did the rg8 come with? Isn't it in half step down?
+Arjevdw I honestly can't remember because i changed strings and tuning as soon as i got it, sorry! Haven't heard of that amp issue myself but sounds like a bunch of rubbish in my opinion. A bass guitar through a guitar amp could mess up your speakers but the pickups in a bass are different to any guitar. I've had 8 strings for 3 years odd with the same amp and it works absolutely fine... Even with my low as hell tuning!
Zeke Furness great, thanks. I've heard good things about the laney cabinets but the head is out of my price range as it is $1200 where I am. Which laney cabinet are you using please as I may look into them if you think it has a good low end for metal?
I'm actually playing an RG2228 27 scale and I'm toned down to drop D#, and my 8th string is an 0.80 the tension is fine, not the brightest nor clear but, what gauges do you recommend for that tune? and for C#?
Sorry dude, I didn't get a notification for this! If you're looking to get a low C# similar to the RG9, I'd recommend a .105; this works okay on my 27" RG8 but the scale length could do with being longer. I even experimented with .115 bass string on the Harley Benton! It had great tension but the scale length didn't really do the note or the string justice and also resulted in me boring holes in the tuners and putting a bigger ferrule in the back. I've since recently reverted to C# standard tuning for the middle 6 with a high F# for the 1st string and a lower G# for the 8th. This is nice and low for a 27" and gives you a lower and higher string to your range.
The longer the better to be honest but I'd say 28" upwards. I actually tune to double drop D on my Ibanez M80M (29.4") with a pack of Ernie Ball 8 string Skinny Top Heavy Bottom... It's nice to not faff around with custom string sets and a lot cheaper! 🤣
So I have this issue. I have an 8 string guitar with active emg pickups. My problem is that my amp can't handle the low end. At low volumes it sounds alright but I need to be able to hear myself over my dads crash symbols. Was hoping you would have a solution. I know this amp I use is kind of old so I'm planning to get a new one But I was wondering if maybe I should try getting some pedals? I currently use a Boss ME80 processor.
Weird as it may sound, you may want to try using full range speakers, especially if you use Boss ME80, or any other modelling processor. See, most guitar cabines, whether cabs or combos, use guitar speakers that focus on mid range, in other words, what a typical guitar typically produces. Modellers, used on extended range guitars, typically produce sound that goes way beyond natural capabilities of typical guitar amplification. Full range speakers will expand that on both ends.
Yeah it's all about the string gauges really but you end up in custom set territory trying to get thick enough strings; I've got a 29.4" now which handles 8 string drop C# with a pack of Ernie balls... no more spending a fortune on custom string sets!
+OW_it_broke sorry mate, I didn't see a notification for this! I haven't had any experience myself with 8 string EMGs but from what I've researched they're good for even response from all strings but they sound flat like most EMGs do... You lose some dynamics with active pickups it seems... Those fishman fluence look interesting though!
Check out DiMarzio, Fishman, Seymour Duncan. I personally don't like EMG's. Am Very happy with my Seymour Duncan Blackouts, if you want it only for chunky distortion and going for a particular sound then go EMG's. EMG's are everywhere so best idea is to go to you're local music shop and ask if they have a guitar with the pickups you want/ what they recommend and have fun
Dude, what 8 string set do you use? I use D'addario 10-74 for drop E on a 25.5'' to 27'' fanned fret guitar, but the 4, 5 and 6 string felt tight as hell, and then I've got a 74 which sounds like a fart no matter how I try.
I don't actually use a set as such... I rather annoyingly have to buy single strings and kind of make my own "pack" to suit how I like my tuning. It costs a bit more but I'd recommend buying singles and changing the strings you don't like to heavier or lighter to suit your taste!
i dont need one it is on my bucket list .... i still have the guitar i found in the barracks in vietnam ....67 tedesco del ray i plugged it into an old AFC pa system ...it sounded crappy but playable! it sounded like somebody toke a hammer to the stings!lol
@@baritonebadboi the tedesco is the same model ed van halen started on... i knew ed in LA we werent friends but we talked about guitars a few times when i went to back yard parties they played at! i thought the brothers were a little strange!
A lot of 8-Strings out there??? There are just a few Models of the big brands without a good variation. The cheapest 8-String with a longer scale is the Meshuggah M80M. That are not a lot of 8-Strings. There are not enough out there.
Peter Pommersche there's quite a few out there that aren't necessarily big name though yeah you're right, in the ratio of 8s to 6s for example, there's basically nothing! I've seen a lot of small scale companies/Luthiers etc who make some outstanding guitars but that's when the budgets start to climb...
It's a .115 bass string - had to drill out the tuner head, drill a larger hole through the guitar, put a bass ferrule in the back of the guitar and also make the hole in the individual bridge bigger! The 115 actually snapped the original bridge so I had a steel one machined at work. For a low C# I'd recommend a longer scale length but appreciate people can't go out and buy a new guitar that easily. I went to a 28" Schecter not long after this vid and recently I finally got a 29.4" Ibanez M80M. Handles it much better.
I have yet to find an 8 or 9 string guitar with a real Floyd Rose tremolo system. That is a show stopper since I use a lot of whammy bar tricks in my guitar playing.
Schecter have the C8 FR range, I was tempted by one a while back but I couldn't find any decent videos of people using the whammy so kinda put me off... I'd imagine there's a load more tension due to thicker and more strings!
Just watched both video, both great, but one thing I need to ask... your hair man, how can it be a tight as fuck topknot and then suddenly that glorious mane‽‽‽
Thanks mate; haha, these are the questions that deserve answers! The short answer is a lot of swearing and breaking of hairbands... Maybe there's another video idea there? lol
Aha I know the pain, I have a normal ponytail now but had a top knot a while back when it was popular, I'm going to be shaving the sides off so I will actually have a very similar hair to you, I was just surprised at how long your hair is, it looked like you had a bun in on the review video 😅
how about a riff? il post a video of a riff, you do a video of a riff :) what ever you think could be usefull for beginer players but i have a nother tuning but we are in key i play with a g# c# f# b e g# c# f# tuning like a 7 string with a high f# :) il translate your rill if it wont be 2 difficult for me on my tuning :) so in on it?
Sorry dude, my youtube app hasn't been showing me comment notifications. Sounds interesting! I'm not really following though sorry, what would it help people with?

Hey dude, Your tuning (apart from the C#) is a whole step up from what I have mine in so a 27" will handle that fine. You may find the low C# a bit loose though; I've recently gotten a Schecter 8 string with a 28" scale that lets the note ring better.

C#, G#, E, B, F# C#, G# C#
On my RG8, the strings i use are: 11, 16, 24w, 34, 46, 64, 80, 105 so you could use that and have slightly tight strings or go a little lighter on each for your slightly higher tuning.
Hope that helps!
Thank you for replying. As long as it's not too loose, with thicker strings and all, I think I'll go ahead and go with the RG8.

This is all down to your string tension really.

I know this amp I use is kind of old so I'm planning to get a new one But I was wondering if maybe I should try getting some pedals? I currently use a Boss ME80 processor.
+Cody Christodoulou hey dude, what amp is it? Do you have EQ control on it?
Weird as it may sound, you may want to try using full range speakers, especially if you use Boss ME80, or any other modelling processor.
See, most guitar cabines, whether cabs or combos, use guitar speakers that focus on mid range, in other words, what a typical guitar typically produces.
Modellers, used on extended range guitars, typically produce sound that goes way beyond natural capabilities of typical guitar amplification. Full range speakers will expand that on both ends.
12” speaker, I’ve tried 8” and 10” but 12” is what you want. Turn the bass down and boost the mid range.
27 is tiny lol, my 7 string is a 27 and still struggles with drop G#, with 11 gauge
Yeah it's all about the string gauges really but you end up in custom set territory trying to get thick enough strings; I've got a 29.4" now which handles 8 string drop C# with a pack of Ernie balls... no more spending a fortune on custom string sets!
I bought a Schecter c-8 Deluxe SBK off of eBay and I'm gonna replace the pickups. Are EMGs good for 8 strings? Thanks!
Use a 80 for the low E string
String Joy out of Nashville will make you a custom set for $15.
It sounds like fart on amp or acoustic too? Cause if it's only on the amp you'll probably need to tighten it up with Tube Screamer or smth
i dont need one it is on my bucket list ....
i still have the guitar i found in the barracks in vietnam ....67 tedesco del ray i plugged it into an old AFC pa system ...it sounded crappy but playable! it sounded like somebody toke a hammer to the stings!lol
Nice!
@@baritonebadboi the tedesco is the same model ed van halen started on...
i knew ed in LA we werent friends but we talked about guitars a few times when i went to back yard parties they played at!
i thought the brothers were a little strange!
Would a 26.5" scale guitar work for tuning down half a step?
I'd imagine so yeah, potentially with some thicker strings dependent on how tight you like them.
Lower tunings I'd advise a longer scale length!
i should've picked the multiscale instead of the normal fret 😂
Your C#s are C#1, C#2 and C#4 for sure
+Filip Abramczyk cool cheers
hey dude can you tell me the modeol of that harley benton?
Errr.... The 8NT QEB DLX. Haha
Thats why i am currently overworking my Ibanez RG-8. I set the bridge lower on the body to gain 3 Inches of scale
Peter Pommersche oh nice! I'm about to buy a new neck for my RG8 to match an M80M. You got any pics or vids?
Yeah maybe i do that too i hate dot inlays^^. There are no pics yet.
Mate take a look at Agile, Ormsby, Keisel,
what string gauge you using for that C# Tuning?
It's a .115 bass string - had to drill out the tuner head, drill a larger hole through the guitar, put a bass ferrule in the back of the guitar and also make the hole in the individual bridge bigger! The 115 actually snapped the original bridge so I had a steel one machined at work. For a low C# I'd recommend a longer scale length but appreciate people can't go out and buy a new guitar that easily. I went to a 28" Schecter not long after this vid and recently I finally got a 29.4" Ibanez M80M. Handles it much better.
I dont Think that this is a c#0 because that would be an octave lower than on a normal 9 string guitar
No you're right, it's the same as a 9 string so C#1.. I got it wrong at the time!
I have yet to find an 8 or 9 string guitar with a real Floyd Rose tremolo system. That is a show stopper since I use a lot of whammy bar tricks in my guitar playing.
Renaissance Man That would be a pain in the ass to have a floyd rose on 8 string.
Haha, it's pandora's bun... Yeah, shaving the sides gives you best of both worlds; it's like a 2 in 1 haircut!
Zeke Furness that's what I'm hoping for! Smart and easy to get out of the way but still retaining long hair when I wana look like a nordmann 😂
I loved the first review, I'm just broke lol.Btw are you in England?
+William Patini thanks man, I'm glad you liked! Yeah I am, South West England.
Zeke Furness Can I add you on Facebook?
Yeah, no problem!
Летов Егор?
Хаха! Кријем се...
Could I string up an 8 string guitar with 4 wound and 4 plain? Get back to me, please.
Sorry dude I didn't realise I no longer had the creator app to see comments!
When you say plain, do you mean like a 9, 10 gauge or similar?
I wouldn’t recommand because i never liked a thick unwounded string.
c# two octaves down... my guy is insane
I think it is only 1 actually dude, it's a C#1... I mistook it for C#0 😅
make more videos!
+AJ Brown cheers dude 🤜 I keep meaning to but I'm forever leaving my camera at work... Soon!
Glad to hear it!
how about a riff? il post a video of a riff, you do a video of a riff :) what ever you think could be usefull for beginer players but i have a nother tuning but we are in key i play with a g# c# f# b e g# c# f# tuning like a 7 string with a high f# :) il translate your rill if it wont be 2 difficult for me on my tuning :) so in on it?
*ill *riff
Sorry dude, my youtube app hasn't been showing me comment notifications.
Sounds interesting! I'm not really following though sorry, what would it help people with?
+Zeke Furness Dont know i wanted to play that day xD
+Matko Max Pogačić what kind of music do you like to play?
I'll have a go at most things to be fair!
I just wanted to hear the sound of your guitar... ㅠㅡㅠ
ruclips.net/video/rUQmjkerRRE/видео.html
fuck it i am going to buy a Harley Benton fanfret 8 I can't justify buying a $400 ot $500 guitar just to play in my bedroom
Did you go through with it? How did you find it if so?
Save your money, buy an Aristides 080, never need to buy another guitar again.
