In Michigan, where I’m from, minimum wage is $9.87 per hour but servers only get $3.75 per hour so that is why I say they live off tips. It’s my understanding that the minimum wage in Czechia just increased this year from CZK 90.50 to CZK 96.40 per hour. So are you saying that servers don’t make CZK 96.40 per hour?
Sorry, but I have to correct you about tipping in restaurants. Czechs usually tip 5 to 10 %. If you are super happy with the food and service you can do more. Yes, most of the waiters get the minimum wage. But the minimum wage is not enough to live off in Czechia. Hardly anybody works for the minimum wage here. Also if you are in any good restaurant it is ok to send the food back. I would not risk it in low-end ones where the meal costs mentioned $3.50. I would say that the average price of a weekday lunch menu is $5.50 and an ala card meal is approximately $10. Greetings from a Czech waiter :)
Are you talking in Prague or in other parts of the country, as I know Prague is more expensive that the rest of the country. Secondly, I must admit that my husband only lived here during communism so I learned that many things he has taught me may not be the same as during them time when he lived here. A lot can change in 30 years. 😊
Most of my knowledge comes either from what I’ve experienced or what my husband has told me. He lived here during communism and then in the states for almost 30 years (he visited here often during that time) and then back here so I think some of the things he tells me have changed and he doesn’t realize it. P Secondly prices here have gone up a lot since I made this video, I’ve noticed that. Thirdly, my husband takes me to only cheap Robert pubs 😫 so the wine sucks, the food is cheap and the service isn’t much to write home about. 🙂 He’s your typical czech guy in his 50’s - very frugal. 😊
I'm talking Czechia average. Of course, you get much higher prices in Prague city center if you don't know where to go for an affordable meal. The weekday lunch meals start at $ 4 but the average price across the country would be in my opinion more around $ 5.50. Ala card meal usually $ 7 - $ 20 depending on what you're having and the type of the place. In pre-Covid times I used to work as a tour guide for English-speaking tourists. I was taking them to a variety of places across Central Europe. It was in my interest to take my clients to good non-overpriced restaurants. :)

I would say you talk more about how to behave in our turistic indurstry than what not to do in CZ. If you want to make a list of what not to do in general than in top 3 things should be "Don't say CZ is in Eastern Europe." Especially don't say it in a restaurant if you don't want your waiter to spit on your food.

There never was tipping in this country till the west started it. I remember a waiter caught me at the door saying "you forgot some money" Here in the west they run after you if you don't tip asking if something was wrong? Different country different customs nothing more. US completely rely on tipping Airport staff with luggage make next to no money so you tip that's their pay
Czech waiters and waitresses are normal employees of a restaurant or bar and receive a regular salary, so the tips do not have to be so high, because their remuneration is already included in the bill.
Would love to know the name of the restaurant where you can get a meal for the equivalent of USD3.50... Maybe fifteen years ago? I mean nowadays a meal from the daily menu will be at least twice that amount, and no, I'm not talking about Prague either.
When I made this video, I hadn't yet experienced the post covid price hikes. I spent most of 2020 "covid year" in America and i returned in winter of 2021 and made this video when all the restaurants were closed for covid so my reference was to before then. I don't know the names of the beer pubs my husband takes me to in Budejce but trust me, they are pubs with great beer and cheap food - and pre-covid most the meals were about $3.50. At the time, I had no idea the effect covid would have on prices all over the world. Now, these same beer pubs with cheap food run about $7 - $10 a meal - anywhere between 150 - 250 ckz.
In 2022 / August / about: 140 - 150 Kc : 24 = 5,83 to 6,25 lunch specials. Soup and main corse. Drink is extra about 0,8 - 1.2 USD. This is in Prag but you must know where to go and as a turist this is problem. Its lot of places like this even in central Prag. US students here in Prag are eating there. I may list those places if it help you guys.
Well perhaps next time I’ll play it by ear based on how friendly the staff is, the type of place I’m in and the where I’m at. I think I can give it a try in a modern place in the city where the staff is friendly, but in some old boys pub in a small village where the 55 year waiter is also the cook and always wears a frown, I’ll probably just order something different. 😀
I feel like it is not that bad to charge someone based on how wealthy they are. When I used to live in the UK I would come back home to the south of Italy and feel RICH. It is so unfair that some countries are wealthier than other, then why should I be fair when it come to making you pay?

Are you from Prague? I’m not sure about everywhere in the country but I know Prague is way different than a lot of other places throughout the country. My husband grew up here and he’s the one that said to never order off menu. He said that it’s not like in America where the customer is always right. I’m sure it’s like that though in Prague where there is so much tourism bit he said in southern bohemian, it’s not so.

(iam czech) no, believe me this is mainly in Prague at souvenir shops and the btchez that do it are mostly not even czechs, i would say dont even go there. find a small localy owned bussines like a small brewery or somethin like that and u can get your souvenirs there. You need to go off the main tourist streets in Prague definetly, its one big tourist trap.
If you're in Prague in the main turist zone in a exchange office or any other kind of shop for tursit, than yes, you realy should nogtiate about the price. But this is a speciality of Prague's turistic area. Don't do in elswhere. I'm saying it as a Czech who worked in one of those exchange offices.

In the US the minimum wage for a server is 7.50. Also if your daily wage doesn't equal the normal minimum wage of 13 the restaurant is responsible to correct it. Places don't honor this law, but it is law.
In the USA, minimum wage varies by State. So in Michigan, minimum wage is $9.87 per hour but for servers, it’s $3.75 so as you can see that’s a HUGE difference so servers REALLY rely on tips from customers.

A one bedroom outside of the city can go for 1300, in the city thousands. Servers seriously depend on their tips. That's why depending on where you go, you have younger and older more skilled Servers. To survive you must learn to make an experience rather them just serve your guests. I'd love to go visit there! My family came to America from there in the early 1900s. My great grandparents were the last to speak the language, as back them, to speak anything but English would cause major issues, so my grandfather was never spoken to in his own language, sad.

Oh goodness, I'm sorry if the video made you feel like you shouldn't come to Czechia. Honestly, there will be cheats and pickpockets everywhere you go if it's a high touristy area. However, Czechia has ranked in the top 10 of the safest places in the world to visit for MANY years in a row. It's honestly a very safe and wonderful place to visit! I encourage all my family to come here. These are just some inside things to look out for while you're here and honestly most of them can be applied to any tourist place you visit. Secondly, the part about sending the food back came from my husband who grew up here in communism and is still probably true in the villages where you have old timers from the communist era running the restaurant, but I've gotten a lot of feedback from people that it's not like that in the tourist areas of Prague. Those cooks are used to tourist sending food back, so although I won't send my food back in the outskirts of CZ where we live, I would probably do it now in Prague. :) I hope this changes your perspective of CZ and you get the chance to come visit this beautiful country!

That thing about waitress. Of course give tip on how that service is but they dont get that much money per month, tips usually balance their low wages. We are kinda cheap and poor country. In Prague you can’t food for 2.5$- 3$, you have to pay at least 5€-6€ . Most restaurants charge 8€-9€ for food..

the standard for tipping is 10% regardless of where the person is from. Rounding up is for when you get small things like a cup coffee or a beer.

(iam czech) no, believe me this is mainly in Prague at souvenir shops and the btchez that do it are mostly not even czechs, i would say dont even go there. find a small localy owned bussines like a small brewery or somethin like that and u can get your souvenirs there. You need to go off the main tourist streets in Prague definetly, its one big tourist trap.
If you're in Prague in the main turist zone in a exchange office or any other kind of shop for tursit, than yes, you realy should nogtiate about the price. But this is a speciality of Prague's turistic area. Don't do in elswhere. I'm saying it as a Czech who worked in one of those exchange offices.

@@dhand0178 What is so surprising about not drinking? I am Czech and don't drink beer at all. You can always look up breweries on internet I think most do some sort of tours. I have been to one in Třeboň years ago.

That was all actualy very true. It´s a shame that people don´t make a good living here, so a lot of them are just trying to scam anyone, especially in Prague.
In the US the minimum wage for a server is 7.50. Also if your daily wage doesn't equal the normal minimum wage of 13 the restaurant is responsible to correct it.
Places don't honor this law, but it is law.
In the USA, minimum wage varies by State. So in Michigan, minimum wage is $9.87 per hour but for servers, it’s $3.75 so as you can see that’s a HUGE difference so servers REALLY rely on tips from customers.
@@CzechingWithKatrina Servers absolutely depend on tips, I know I'm one lol. The wage isn't enough for an adult to live, as you said it's by state, but in NY it's impossible to live on 7.50 an hour. A one bedroom outside of the city can go for 1300, in the city thousands.
Servers seriously depend on their tips. That's why depending on where you go, you have younger and older more skilled Servers. To survive you must learn to make an experience rather them just serve your guests.
I'd love to go visit there! My family came to America from there in the early 1900s. My great grandparents were the last to speak the language, as back them, to speak anything but English would cause major issues, so my grandfather was never spoken to in his own language, sad.
@@beentheredonethat5908 yes it was quite common for immigrants to refuse to speak their language as they wanted to integrate so badly as not to cause any problems for themselves and their family. At the time, they were doing what seemed to be (and possibly was) what was best for their family. But now it’s sad because their grandchildren have lost an integral part of their culture.
Geez....I've wanted to travel to the Czech Republic because my wife has strong ancestry there. But constantly being worried about people taking advantage of us or doing something to our food doesn't sound like a place I want to go to 😒
Oh goodness, I'm sorry if the video made you feel like you shouldn't come to Czechia. Honestly, there will be cheats and pickpockets everywhere you go if it's a high touristy area. However, Czechia has ranked in the top 10 of the safest places in the world to visit for MANY years in a row. It's honestly a very safe and wonderful place to visit! I encourage all my family to come here. These are just some inside things to look out for while you're here and honestly most of them can be applied to any tourist place you visit.
Secondly, the part about sending the food back came from my husband who grew up here in communism and is still probably true in the villages where you have old timers from the communist era running the restaurant, but I've gotten a lot of feedback from people that it's not like that in the tourist areas of Prague. Those cooks are used to tourist sending food back, so although I won't send my food back in the outskirts of CZ where we live, I would probably do it now in Prague. :)
I hope this changes your perspective of CZ and you get the chance to come visit this beautiful country!

No, not correctly. But you can check out my playlist, Mluvím Česky to see how I say it. I’m sure in one of those videos, I use a word with Ř. The hardest is when it’s at the beginning of a word like řídit. It’s a little easier in words like představit.
That thing about waitress. Of course give tip on how that service is but they dont get that much money per month, tips usually balance their low wages. We are kinda cheap and poor country. I think you talking about this country little bit too as country where everyone try to steal from you. Its not true. Its more comaprison to Prague but in other towns or in Moravia its not that much.
