As a beginner its easy to feel coerced into buying a ton of specialist equipment and materials. This is much more helpful to someone like me who isn't prepared to commit to a new hobby they've got no experience with.
Another method I have seen is to use cut up old bed sheets dipped into a runny plaster of paris mix in a large container, and the draw this over a dowel that is placed across the top of the container. This is very good for doing large areas at a time, and you don't have to spend so much time smoothing it out. Cheers DaveH
TheTerrainTutor Not quite yet, I'm still learning as much as possible, done a few experiments with foam, but I aint quite ready to jump in properly, I'm getting my Boltaction Soviets together first! I gotta paint em up! I will get to the terrain eventually, just learning loads from yourself and other sources! FANTASTIC VIDS BY THE WAY! We could do with a revival of this sort of hobby!
Thanks so much for the videos. My son wants to make a snowy mountain, so your tutorial has given me an idea on how to make it. It is straight forward, not difficult to understand and your voice is so clear and concise.
Another useful video. Instead of rolled up paper balls I know a lot of old schoolers used chicken wire to build up the substructure. Might be worth a go in the future.
Mel this bring back all memories of making volcanoes with each of the children as they went through their grades. We call the paper balls wads down here but I think your right about the US train guys calling it something else. Most of my gaming boards have a rolling tops to create dead ground. I use plaster bandage on them to protect the slopes and peaks. If fact any where on a scenery piece where I what extra strength and protection it goes down.
Thank you so much for your video, I have just made various pieces of terrain for my Grandchildren during Lockdown. Kept me busy and doing something to give them when I get to see them again. They will no don't use it for all sorts of toys. Your video was very helpful. Karen
Dear Terrain Tutor, your videos are literally the best thing on the internet if you're ever in the states feel free to come to Missouri and ill smoke you up some KC style pulled pork as a show of gratitude
I really like that kind of rock modelling. It's a very good way to make very realistic terrain. The camera/sound/light settings are really good, especially when you're in your hobby room (?) at the end of the video. :)
Wow loooks awesome......now ive got hood idees how to build a landscape......i wanted to use paper mache...but youre way is brilliant....many thanks and greetz
I am surprised how good it looks ! nice Mel, I have to say I do a lot stuff with my 3 y old - cardboard terrain but I use hot glue ( its not that hot - you cant burn yourself with it) ant this looks so much fun for kids! cheers Mate!
I usually use paper towels and a solution of about 30-40% PVA and water, or Spackle and water (though, I don't usually measure that out. I know the consistency I want.) However, you have a point about the plaster bandages being cheaper. I may use them in my LARP set build.
"Sci-fi/fantasy" world. Basically, it's an what if a massive EMP or solar flare happens tomorrow. Whose group will make it type of thing. 5 groups of survivalist are tested. Some places that are off the grid still have power, others don't. They need to make it to check points, and play the scavenger hunt, for supplies. But here is where it gets interesting. They loose a member every time they do something stupid. Like failure to treat a wound. Getting poisoned from failure to boil the drinking water, getting shot (paint ballls), etc.
Hi. I was the one in the tttt group that you were talking to about the board i made with a similar construction method. Just a few suggestions. 1. The smaller the bits you scrutch up the better texture you get. 2 to make level platforms get a second piece of mdf and hold it up with a hidden block of wood. Anyway. The hooks look great, thanks for the video.
Was just looking for some plaster bandage techniques for terrain and sure enough - my man Mel has a video on it. You Sir are truly a terrain building legend and I keep coming back to your impressive collection of techniques and videos. Many many thanks! Ps: Couldn't help but notice the newspaper headline at the start of the video. Was that an intentional easter egg? :P
Another great video. I have a box of this stuff in the attic I've been meaning to get around to using. Thanks for the inspiration. Random question what video editor do you use?
Lovely video. I m going to make a cave. Can you advise me regarding the texture of cave like which all colours to be used and how to make stone look texture in cave
Hi Mel. Nice rock. (rotfl!) You sure dont take yourself seriously, or you'd have edited that part out! As always, an instructional and very entertaining video. Dude, you rock! (Hey, ya knew someone was gonna say it) ;-)
Early in the video you mention the base. Now this is a problem i've been having for over ten years! I have yet to find a cheap material, which is easy to cut into shape, for making terrain bases! EVERYTHING Ive tried so far gets all warped up! Even MDF board! (which btw is not very cheap or easy to cut into shape) Whats your best tip for making terrain bases? Thanx for a great video and great channel!
TheTerrainTutor I've been using MDF in various thinckness, but they all get more ore less warped. I also find MDF rather cumbersome, since it is pretty heavy. We usually do our terrain pieces roughly 12x12". I am looking for something thin, and easy to cut into shapes. (my friend is talking about aluminium, but I think he has lost it) :p
Heĺlo there,it looks like you could really be a tutor regarding these stuff!! ☺ l am amazed by your skills and l always enjoy watching you show your techniques for one of my all time favourite hobbies! Keep up the good work, dude! 😃 By the way,l'd like to ask you three questions: -l am going to use EPS foam along with some foam board to build a diorama,so l want to know if l should use newspaper sheets wrapped around them or not? -When should l start carving the plaster? Before or after it has dried completely? -What kind of product is the filler you use in this video, exactly? Could you send me a link where l can find some information about it? Should l apply it first and then carve it or the other way around? Sorry for the big comment! Thanks in advance! Liked and sbscribed,of course!! 😃☺😊😉
that would be a awesome creation for like a insect habitat like making the terrain and then just turn it into a home for insects i don't know i'm just a huge fan of insects
This is exactly how my dad showed me how to do it many years ago! It's really good for backdrops and long cliff lines.
Mark Tookey Gottaq love the old ways matey :-)
Used this technique to make a mountain for grandsons school project. Brilliant Thanks.
Awesome, hope he got a good mark for it

David Houghton There's a few different materials you can use for the carrier, actual bandages with filler work well as well
This is a very economic way of working, as the foam is often expensive! GREAT PRACTICAL VID!
This has already given me so many ideas! FUCK YEAH!
LeSadW666 Sounds like you'll be on a mission mate, good luck!

Another useful video. Instead of rolled up paper balls I know a lot of old schoolers used chicken wire to build up the substructure. Might be worth a go in the future.

Eric Elder It's the little tips that are the best mate
I usually use paper towels and a solution of about 30-40% PVA and water, or Spackle and water (though, I don't usually measure that out. I know the consistency I want.) However, you have a point about the plaster bandages being cheaper. I may use them in my LARP set build.
Shannon Stokely Paper towels are a good carrier, what's your LARP set build?

[0:14] "She wanted me for sex" - good use of high quality newspapers, Mel!
What else would you use The Sun for mate?
Hi.
I was the one in the tttt group that you were talking to about the board i made with a similar construction method. Just a few suggestions.

Since you're putting wet gaze over the newspaper balls, what are the chances of mould growing inside of the rocky rock?
None, if it's dry enough for the modroc, it'll dry out the paper as well mate
Awesome, thanks a lot, mate.
thx sir stranger
