It’s really a story about daddy issues: Eren, Historia, Erwin, Levi and his father figure, Eren’s *dad’s* dad; and heck, even the beast titan has major daddy issues!
Aot really changed my view on morality. Personally till S04 my favorite character was Eren Jeager. The reason being that I could resonate with him so much! I was naive, passionate, and the kind of explorer Eren is with freedom being THE MOST IMPORTANT to me. And I'm literally 16 years old, so all too close. And as Eren changed I, as a human being have also been changing. I realized that I used to see the world as black and white. Good and evil. But AOT changed my view and I realized that things are BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL. Eren might have become a utilitarian as of what he seems till now. It hurts me so much for a kind hearted Eren to see like this. Especially now that he has lost the spark in his eyes. This year(2020 when I watched AOT) I've been going through depression and the same transition of my naiveness being destroyed by the world. Eren after killing children seemed to be literally not affected, even by a bit. Which hurt! Anyways I guess we all can agree that Isayama is a LITERAL GENIUS. More than anything, more than the facade of the cool action sequences and great storytelling of AOT, there lies great depth. Immensely GREAT DEPTH. And watching other's interpretation of that Depth; philosophical analysis of AOT helps me understand things and the characters better. Wisecrack - thank you. And looking forward to a full philosophical analysis after AOT is over.
Gaunter O'dimm no, not at all. Though I was able to understand Inception. I was exclaiming about AoT being complicated as it is and how he says it’s just gonna get more complicated.
How is everyone missing the Japanese nationalism themes? The royal family are bound by a vow to renounce war. The Japanese constitution also talks about a vow to renounce war. Some characters in the series think that the vow to renounce war is like a suicide of Paradis society. The main character thinks he should raise an ARMY of Titans and then he uses that army to destroy the world, because the world won't stop attacking Paradis because of crimes that their ancestors did.
Another great chapter guys and I think this is exactly what we are seeing in American Politics now. The need to change because of the state of the world, and the desire to maintain the status quo. Keep it going.
After this season ends you better revisit it again, it`s much more about the pointless and endless cycle of bloodshed and hate of human history than just the friend/enemy distinction. The story makes you hate monsters with all you got and that gives you meaning on the story, only to later make you emphatize and feel bad for these same monsters with all you got, and you truly believe and understand how often the only thing to blame is the world itself. It`s really a genius classic in the making.
There's a lot you've missed, but I'm still interested to see how your philosophical interpretation evolves as more of the anime comes out (You have perfect timing for a throwback, because the manga just dropped a lot of shit that people have been debating about endlessly, with tons of theories going around)
I think you can draw an analogy between person and society in it's developement, and you can use some phenomena in personal psychology in describing the society. I'd say that status quo in this analogy is an equivalent of comfort zone. We all know that staying in your comfort zone forever is very bad idea. Like the comfort zone for an individual, status quo is gonna cause the society to be stagnant, unable to develop and whatever suffering it endures will never go away until the status quo is broken.
@@ShellShock145 Claymore has the same flaws as Bleach. Keeps introducing characters who does nothing in the story. The battles are very similar as well. Just finished all of season 3. I've been noticing some naturalist and even existentialist themes. I'd love to explore more of that. I'm very interested in how the final season plays out. "epistemic endosmosis" Through a process I like to call "mitochondrial sophist obfuscation", we create terminology that makes something straightforward more complicated. It helps sustain my noble lifestyle.
This is perhaps one of the most insightful video essays I have seen in a while; You have made a meticulous effort to break down and inquire the themes that Isayama seems to explore as he is partly responsible for the plot decisions made for Attack on Titan. I feel, as many others do, that the show's inquiry on social order is disturbingly relatable to the political strife we have now, and given that we are living in a fragmented world, I believe it is paramount that the delicacy of the public sphere should be enquired more by popular culture-- creators and artists have plenty of opportunities to explore this subject matter. By the way, what is the name of the soundtrack starting from 17:10 until 18:11? it made the essay that much more mesmerizing, and I would like to hear the rest of it
You should do a video on Trigun and how it fits a lot of archetypes from westerns as well as exploring utilitarianism and whether people are inherently good or evil plus a lot of other stuff
Thanks Jared, for doing my anime homework -- now if only my son could do his actual homework for me, he'd be a good kid like you. ^.^ I knew if I waited long enough, either my teenager or this show would do the homework for me past where my attention span died.
I love what AoT has evolved into. It’s started as a post apocalyptic, last humans on earth show into something so complex and interesting that I can’t even talk about just so I don’t ruin it to people. World building and twist and turns done right!
So many people complaining that this is information is Moot because it's based off of anime and not the manga. When in reality the creator has influenced the anime for the better in their opinion and no matter how far ahead the manga is, any video about its current state will be out dated eventually unless its based off the manga after its officially ended
hey wisecrack. just to tell that there is something you haven't talked about social status quo in AOT that i'd like to hear from you; it's a theme that is also present in Animal Farm, and that is how social classes are always one against the other for the sake of power (marxist ideas). think about how the government tried to destroy the survey corps and then the survey corps started a revolution that ended with Historia as the new Queen. SPOILERS: then in the manga, the new goverment they set up is in danger to be destroyed by the jaeger faction. that's the other side of the coin of the human condition; that it doesn't matter who is in power, because power will always shift by an oppressed group (yeah, power corrupts).
Critiquing and dissecting various philosophic themes and overtones in one of the most beloved anime/manga series currently in circulation all the while wearing a swishahosue t shirt. So much win in this video!!!!!!!!
Not to mention that the site he created looked like total arse, if I where a recruiter looking at that thing I'd probably insta-reject it. Just learn HTML and CSS guys, it's not hard! I'm a complete and utter idiot when it comes to computers, but even I was able to figure it out after a few free courses (try CodeAcademy, it's pretty great).
in the manga too, oh you'll learn the secrets all right, but new ones ALWAYS take their place. And freakin more secrets too. It's like Lost in that aspect, the characters are also the center of the story.
What makes people keep coming back to AoT is the hope that they will begin to unravel one of the many deeper secrets the show has to offer. Be it the titan (or titans) in the walls or the mystery that nearly every character has behind them. Hats why I come back anyways.
I'm so confused why Wisecrack continue to discuss issues regarding AOT while not reading the manga. The manga is much more complex, as the anime is an adaptation and as such makes changes to the story. So the conclusion these videos are attempting to reach are based on corrupted information. The manga provides information that they anime simply does not, also the anime's pacing in all over the place in comparison to the manga.
True, but the anime WAS super-faithful to the manga right up until the 3rd season, and those changes WERE made by the author himself, so that's a bit debateable. For the record, though, I don't agree with the 3rd season changes either.
Tbh the anime is the reason I haven't caught up. The voice acting is on point but the art is pretty meh and the pacing makes it rather hard to keep interest. If I had to give the series a go I'd go with the manga. No matter how faithful an anime is to the manga, it's all for naught if the direction of the anime is not very good
I think 1 or 2 points with regards to why when Rod's younger brother became the founding titan (or any previous heir for that matter) they decided to let things be... It's not that they decided to stay behind the walls for "protection" Its because as the true coordinate (look it up) with royal bloodline they basically have some divine foresight and can see the events that will play out should the 'status quo' be changed or if humanity within the walls' curse be lifted. And all of this is with accordance to the will of the King that sealed them in the 1st place. He created some lasting desire that permeates through each generation of 'Royals'. But Rod saw what happened to his brother and instead of taking up the reigns himself after seeing how his brother became essentially a pacifist monk and the whole 'Die in 13 years' thing decided "Nah... fuck that noise". Although that last bit isnt revealed until part 2 (and the manga ofc). Its waaaaay deeper than just a matter of protection and keeping humanity "docile". Love this lore

18:37 First, I want to say, *I love this video already.* This seems to be an *extremely* interesting take on *Attack On Titan,* what with the show's presentation of "us vs them," manipulation of the status quo, pretty much *everything* related to it. I'm especially surprised about +Wisecrack 's take on Historia (Hystoria?). She seems to be the most interesting character of the show considering her hatred of humanity. It would seem that, in a way, she almost relates to *me.* I mean, as much as I appreciate *living in this giant habitation we call Earth,* I legitimately thought that the most important thing for us, as *human beings* is to *survive natural threats* and overcome potential risks. Needless to say, that, in and of itself, may very well be a stigmatization by *society in general.* That being said, whenever I *do* hear of threats, it's always from "groups outside of our groups," not, I don't know, *the bias we hold against each other.* So let me get *this* out of the way and confess something right now. *I FUCKING hate our current system!* I FUCKING hate how society just writes down all these *random* rules with no given thought to *question* them! I FUCKING hate how society *presents* these rules, much less put them to practice. I *especially* hate how much *significance* society tries to put into those rules! *I FUCKING live in America, GODDAMN it!* If I wanted to *sell my own SOUL* just to *try* to conform to beliefs and ideologies *outside* me, just to *try* to fit in with *everyone else,* the *first* thing I'd LITERALLY have to do for that is *suck somebody's genitalia,* for no other reason than to *serve them!* But as you should figure out by now, *I'm not that kind of guy!* However, from what I've seen so far on the *Internet,* there's pretty much a *massive slew* of people abroad *sucking each other's genitalia* for no other reason than to "feel safe"..., because after all, *that's how we make FRIENDS for the most part!* You know what FUCKING disappoints me the *most* about this? The fact that we have the *potential* to communicate at a foreign distance, thanks to social mediums like +RUclips , +Facebook , Twitter, +Instagram , etc., *and those companies have DELIBERATELY allowed us to do FAR more harm than we have done since ancient times!* Of *course* words aren't supposed to hurt! *They're just WORDS in the end, right?* Not according to all the growing *hundreds* of people in *my own generation* who are DELIBERATELY using social media to *ATTACK* each other more and more, and using other *tools* and *resources* online, *all* just to prove their points and keep up their advantage! That's how we're still *trolling* each other, that's how much *memes* we're making, and that's *especially* how so many people *being* hurt online *suddenly choose to commit SUICIDE, and let the others know before they actually DO!* No one should even have to *go* through this type of shit! No one *asked* for those kind of conflicts, and yet, *despite all the freedom we have been GRANTED by social media,* the hypocrisy *clearly* shows when on *one* hand, these companies turn a *blind eye* to REAL legal issues taking place on their part, like *PLAGIARISM,* and on the *other* hand answer to *mainstream* companies with their *own* agendas, one of which being to *take down these social media platforms USER BY USER!* That's not even *mentioning* the poor communication we get from *RUclips* after the fact! What kind of company *DOES* all this to their *own* consumers?? A *lazy, ignorant, money-hungry, often-cowardly FUCKHEAD* company is what! I don't care *who* in the their headquarters *suddenly* decided at the *LAST* minute to inform us that they've been taming their *algorithm* program *their entire time,* RUclips might as well be *in* on this scheming act when they've been busy dealing with *paycheck after paycheck,* while their *users* have been literally *TROLLING each other to death!!!!* On a sidenote, I'm actually *glad* someone in their headquarters have *finally* told us about that bit, because after a *whole* decade trying to *follow* their trends, and figure out exactly *who* in the entire multi-medium industry is *leading* the charts, *simply* so I could find a way to compete in the market, I can *finally* say with *pure* confidence that *I'm totally over RUclips, now.* Now I'm just waiting for the right moment to *exploit the ever-living SHIT out of them!* Because let's face it, for as much as I love +PewDiePie , +Markiplier , MatPat of +The Game Theorists , and all the hard-working RUclips Animators coming on the platform, and as much as I appreciate all the celebrities trying it out, Hollywood and otherwise, they *all* came up on RUclips *not* for RUclips, but for the fun and *discovery* of it all. And if the *ultimate* discovery of this kinda thing is that *all* those hypocrisies I've mentioned is *leading* all of us to *Article 13,* then I *never* wanted part in the social media *in the first place.* *FUCK* social media, *FUCK* those *puppet* companies, and *FUCK* society and their *manipulative* system. *They can ALL BURN IN HELL for what they've done!* I'm going on a *rant* about this, but it's all to point out something this video actually *is* missing: the undeniable fact that all the mainstream media companies have been trying their *damnedest* NOT to be as *lazy, ignorant, greedy, and cowardly* as all the social media companies I've mentioned, and actually *appeal* to society as they are. How does society *repay* the mainstream media *time after time?* *With utter HORSESHIT* (trolling, call-outs with no true cause, worthless memes, death threats, and the like) *But "[y]a gotta love the Internet sometimes!" (- MatPat)* *FUCK the world and then leave her the FUCK behind! SHE'S DEAD TO ME!!!!*

Mystery box narrative. You hit the nail on the head there. The first season was amazing, but since the story relies on pulling the rug from under your feet every time with a new revelation, the effect is it just goes more and more crazy into the rabbit whole of multi level conspiracies. Each next reveal has to be crazier than the previous one. Eventually it makes the show tiresome.

That's... An interesting thought.
From what we see in s4, its more close to say its bares more of a resemblance to Animal Farm.
@@JohnL-m2l Dude what you described is applicable 1 to 1 with Germany and their action taken during ww2

I hope they revisit Attack on Titan since Season 3 Part 2 just finished.

There's a lot to say in it about how patriarchy exploits women for its own benefit.
@@ShellShock145 Claymore has the same flaws as Bleach. Keeps introducing characters who does nothing in the story. The battles are very similar as well. Bleach with girl power.

Just finished all of season 3. I've been noticing some naturalist and even existentialist themes. I'd love to explore more of that. I'm very interested in how the final season plays out.
Edit: Upon further research, the show seems to be heavily adapted from the works of Nietzsche. Perhaps most specifically "Thus Spoke Zarathustra"
I heard some people say it also took inspiration from Norse Mythology. When season 4 airs, people will understand that claim.

By the way, what is the name of the soundtrack starting from 17:10 until 18:11?
it made the essay that much more mesmerizing, and I would like to hear the rest of it

hey wisecrack. just to tell that there is something you haven't talked about social status quo in AOT that i'd like to hear from you; it's a theme that is also present in Animal Farm, and that is how social classes are always one against the other for the sake of power (marxist ideas). think about how the government tried to destroy the survey corps and then the survey corps started a revolution that ended with Historia as the new Queen. SPOILERS: then in the manga, the new goverment they set up is in danger to be destroyed by the jaeger faction. that's the other side of the coin of the human condition; that it doesn't matter who is in power, because power will always shift by an oppressed group (yeah, power corrupts).

No matter how faithful an anime is to the manga, it's all for naught if the direction of the anime is not very good
InsideJoke what changes were made in the 3rd season that are different from the manga.
Anime has better pacing than the manga.

First, I want to say, *I love this video already.* This seems to be an *extremely* interesting take on *Attack On Titan,* what with the show's presentation of "us vs them," manipulation of the status quo, pretty much *everything* related to it. Needless to say, that, in and of itself, may very well be a stigmatization by *society in general.*
That being said, whenever I *do* hear of threats, it's always from "groups outside of our groups," not, I don't know, *the bias we hold against each other.* So let me get *this* out of the way and confess something right now. *I FUCKING hate our current system!* I FUCKING hate how society just writes down all these *random* rules with no given thought to *question* them! I FUCKING hate how society *presents* these rules, much less put them to practice. I *especially* hate how much *significance* society tries to put into those rules! *I FUCKING live in America, GODDAMN it!* If I wanted to *sell my own SOUL* just to *try* to conform to beliefs and ideologies *outside* me, just to *try* to fit in with *everyone else,* the *first* thing I'd LITERALLY have to do for that is *suck somebody's genitalia,* for no other reason than to *serve them!* But as you should figure out by now, *I'm not that kind of guy!* However, from what I've seen so far on the *Internet,* there's pretty much a *massive slew* of people abroad *sucking each other's genitalia* for no other reason than to "feel safe"..., because after all, *that's how we make FRIENDS for the most part!*
You know what FUCKING disappoints me the *most* about this? *They can ALL BURN IN HELL for what they've done!*
I'm going on a *rant* about this, but it's all to point out something this video actually *is* missing: the undeniable fact that all the mainstream media companies have been trying their *damnedest* NOT to be as *lazy, ignorant, greedy, and cowardly* as all the social media companies I've mentioned, and actually *appeal* to society as they are.

Your point makes no sense.
