In the early 80s I inherited my paternal Grandmother's Singer machine. You know the old black one that had its own wooden case. I always dreamed of being able to have them all setup. Emmy thank you, your video reminded of these great memories. My Mom passed March of 2021 at the age of 95 ❤❤❤

I love this idea. I started collecting the plastic grocery store bags that I was accumulating and before the month was up I was amazed at how much plastic I was consuming by not using a Green Earth Bag. Remember, there is a floating garbage patch twice the size of Texas floating around in the Pacific Ocean (see: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch) as well as others in all of our other oceans. This is a great idea, creating reusable grocery bags! 👏👏

I love this so much! I have a German Shepherd, so we go through a lot of dog food and it comes in these big, sturdy plastic bags that aren't recyclable and it always bothered me to have to throw out these giant bags every month or two. I figured there had to be something you could do with them, but it never occurred to me to turn them in to tote bags! Now that I've seen them used as a textile, I'm wondering what else I could make with them. Key tray? Tarp? Oh, the possibilities... I'm never throwing out another dog food bag!
It's funny...I'm watching this video while making poop bags for my dog. Newspapers are delivered in these long bags. I cut them in half and seal the one half using my straightening iron and some tin foil. I have my neighbours saving their bags too. Haven't needed to buy poop bags for years!

They'd work double duty for Christmas presents too 💜 We actually got sidetracked today and got a few that are cute at a free thing and thats my plan for them.
I cannot thank you enough for this idea to use my bulk rice bags! I think polyester or nylon thread will last better, and backstitching by hand would actually be stronger (although I don't want to do that to my hands). But I wouldn't be thinking about it without your idea! Thank you!
I have quilt made by mother and grandmother. The fabric came from flower bags. They would come in lovely patterns and my grandma would make dresses for my mom. The scraps and the white bags made the quilt. Love what you do!
I highly recommend making the straps longer than even your original variety. Roughly 12 years ago I did this using cat food bags. The longer straps made it possible for me to make it from the car to the house in one fewer trips. These things are sturdy too! We're still using the original ones from 12 years ago. I wish I had time to make some more.

I used to make similar reusable totes using "disposable" plastic grocery bags! If you cut the bottoms and tops of the plastic grocery bag, you can stack them flat (I used 3 to 5 bags stacked I think) and use an iron over a towel to "laminate" them together and get a similar strong plastic "fabric". Then I cut and sewed similar to this tutorial. I've used some of these for years and they are still going strong! And to not waste the cut bottoms and handles, I would tie all those pieces together and use as a twine for various purposes around the house
Love this video as someone who made a homemade handsewn temperature resistant Violin case out of 85 percent recycled and found materials and is "allergic" to sewing machines any project that is a sewing machine project can be done by hand if you A use a high quality upolstery thread and B backstitching french knots and carful thread melting with a cigarette lighter as needed. Thank you for making me a video that will improve my daily life emensly but that I didn't even know I could ask for.
This is the first video of yours I watched, I loved it and started binge-watching as the weather is miserable outside and I was staying home. I watched so many of your cooking videos and hope you consider doing more videos like these, I am going to contact a couple friends who buy chicken feed and see if I can have some of their bags. For those that don't have and can't afford a sewing machine, I recently found a channel called the Sewn Company that has easy and clear tutorials for sewing things by hand! They have left and right handed tutorials. The stitch that might be good for this project is the Back stitch, since it seems to be pretty strong. It'll be a little more time consuming, but this seems like a good project to learn hand sewing with!
Thank you Emmy. I been looking for videos on how to reuse my rice bags. I go through them so much and I use it for garbage bags but always feel is a waste and now since the corintine i have saved the bags and put them aside in till I can find a video on how to make them in to bags and also purchase my very 1st sewing machine last year too. So thank you for making this video is going to help me a lot.
I can’t wait to do this! I love the idea of repurposing something that is so useful for every day life! And it’s such a great project to work on my sewing skills! Thanks for sharing 💕
I was literally just dusting off my unused sewing machine for a different project when I saw this post. I am for sure doing this. I am potentially going to seek out products I will use but wouldn't normally buy just to have cool custom bags. 😎 love this kind of stuff
I remember in elementary school, we had a project for Home Economics class. we had to use juice packaging (like Capri Sun type of packaging). We'll clean it to make sure it's not slimy or sticky and make sure it's empty of any liquids inside, then we will sew it together. Then we had to make sure it stands up on its own and is durable for heavy loads.
My mom has been doing this for years with chicken, dog, and horse feed bags. Mom mixes and matches the panels on each side to be the "good" side of different bags. You can go to the dollar store and get some of those flexible cutting boards to put in the bottom to make it stiffer. My sewing machine is a singer model 66. It can sew forward and back stitch, thats it. It does have enough power to man handle leather and thick denim.
for beginners especially... its much easier to attach the handles before you put the front and back even on the bag! just keep them well away form the sides
I have a handmade purse from India that's made from recycled sari silk and the liner is made from rice bags. I get them from Darn Good Yarn and they're really pretty and all one of a kind. I love the idea of reusing the rice bags!
Ah the 70.ties is back, my mum and her friends used to make these and even quilt work with coffee bags. I have the pattern in one of my 70:ties crafts books.
theres a store called ten thousand villages that is fair trade items, in poor countries. this reminds me of some of the bags i have seen, so creative and so useful!
I didn't think of those big strong cat food bags. Thank you so much for the idea. I just hope that the needle holes won't weaken the plastic and make them tear since they are not woven. I'll give it a try.
This is an awesome idea! I love your sewing machine! You dont even have to manually lift the presser foot! I have an OLD singer sewing machine. I love it but boy it is moody as hell! I've broken needles, It stops sometimes mid project! lol. So I relate to your first sewing machine story!
I use a (capped) sharpie marker to make good creases on folds - nice small, ergonomic item that's got a slippery curved design that glides but allows good application of pressing force on one point. Thanks for the vid!
We have these in market areas here in the Philippines! Also in our town, we are exercising no plastic for years now so we use paper bags and eco bags. ;)
I remember sewing in highschool and breaking the needle because my ambitions outweighed what school machines could do and then yelling the teacher's name because replacing needles and rethreading machines was NOT my bag while mentally cursing. Not wanting to get in trouble for breaking any more class needles I became queen of hand sewing!

I love your personality you are bubbly and explain everything very well.
every time I watch your videos it brings me right back to all the best qualities of early RUclips. you just never stopped making that kind of content and I appreciate you for it

Been upcycling rice bags to grocery bags for years! So durable ♥️
I was literally just dusting off my unused sewing machine for a different project when I saw this post. I am for sure doing this. I am potentially going to seek out products I will use but wouldn't normally buy just to have cool custom bags. 😎 love this kind of stuff
Thank you! Every time I throw away that dog food bag, I feel a little bad, but it doesn't say it's recyclable. NOW I have a thing I can do with it!
That’s a great idea! Good job.
This reminds me of flour sacks made from cloth during depression era so they could be used to make clothing. My mom had flour sack dresses.
What a phenomenal thing to do to repurpose bags. I love this idea!

I love this so much! If I had a sewing machine, or sewing skills in general, or the Patience for sewing, I'd make one! Lol
This is a good project. Those bags are great for shopping. You should make one with insulation for cold or warm stuff and with a zipper closure.
What an awesome idea! That’s reason 1022 why it pays to watch your videos. Thanks for sharing.
emmy you need to sell everything you make. you would make a fortune lol everything you make is so nice especially this. so durable and purposeful 👍
Emmy, you are such a good teacher--so clear and concise!
Neat idea! I have a relative that makes grocery bags crocheted out of plarn (yarn made from strips of plastic grocery bags).
What an interesting video. I love it. I'm not looking to DIY anything but I'll absolutely watch everything you post. Fantastic job
for beginners especially... its much easier to attach the handles before you put the front and back even on the bag! just keep them well away form the sides
How to make your Saturday night even better? Watch and Emmy video :)
Will be sending my mom all my rice bags so she can make these for me lol! And I’m here humbly requesting a mac and cheese video!!
I love little functional crafts like this!
i really enjoyed watching this episode. I've been wanting to repurpose rice bags and this was very helpful. Exactly the bag I want to make.
I have a handmade purse from India that's made from recycled sari silk and the liner is made from rice bags. I get them from Darn Good Yarn and they're really pretty and all one of a kind. I love the idea of reusing the rice bags!
OMG, extra large Horse Feed bags, never going to throw them away after watching this..great video
I need more sewing tutorials now. Just anything tutorials. Lol. Youre great!
You are a fabulous teacher! Thank you for such an easy tutorial 🥰
what needle would you suggest using? since the material is sorta sturdy
Ah the 70.ties is back, my mum and her friends used to make these and even quilt work with coffee bags. I have the pattern in one of my 70:ties crafts books.
Emmy does arts and crafts, too?? She's so stinkin' creative!
Very useful way of reusing things.
theres a store called ten thousand villages that is fair trade items, in poor countries. this reminds me of some of the bags i have seen, so creative and so useful!
This is a really smart idea and not too hard to execute either.
Thank you!

“PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT!” Every Friends fanatic smiled when she kept saying pivot.
It’s about time for a new bag of rice - this is perfect! Thank you!
We have these in market areas here in the Philippines! Also in our town, we are exercising no plastic for years now so we use paper bags and eco bags. ;)
Wow. What a great project. Thanks for making this video. I learned a lot from it.
I love this idea! Thanks for sharing! I just took a rice bag out of my recycling bin!
More sewing projects please!!! 😍🤩
my friend and I were just talking about making these! so excited to try it out :)
also, nice halloween costume!
She cooks, raises animals, gardens, keeps bees, conducts science experiments & now sew....what can't Emmy do?! You make me want to be a little less lazy and work on some projects of my own!

I've been looking for this for my business to reuse the sacks at home thanks a lot
I love the reusable bags because I use it a lot.
