Diana Ross's Supreme Tragedy

  • It’s no surprise that Diana Ross was Motown’s biggest breakout star. After all, she clearly had the drive to make it to the top…and she wasn’t afraid to step on a few people on her way up the ladder. But no amount of ambition could save Ross from a life filled with scandal and heartbreak behind the scenes-from the shocking affairs and dark secrets, to the dire tragedy that nearly destroyed her.

When I saw the part about how Diana and Berry Gordy mistreated Florence Ballard what came to mind was Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones and how their first manager Andrew Oldham sided with Mick and Keith to destroy Jones who like Florence Ballard was the founder of the band. Creepy isn't it?

I totally agree with you. I loved the Supremes and Diana's voice. But they way she treated Florence was horrible, and was a big turn off for me.
Diana was ruthless in her climb to the top. Berry Gordy thought Flo was too heavy , especially in comparison to Diana.
Poor Flo started drinking and she spiraled down to her untimely death.

I was a teen in 1962. Thanks to a couple of Top 40 hits, I became a Mary Wells fan. It bugged the HELL out of me to see all of the 'good stuff' being given to the less versatile, reedy little voice of Diana Ross. Even now, in my mid-70s, I have a hard time listening to my Supremes records without feeling creeped out a bit. I met Mary Wilson at one of her solo shows, back in the 1990s. What a sweet, humble, gracious lady! Find her autobiography and read it! It gave me a whole new perspective on the whole Motown story.

@Polyphemus47 Oh no! I can't leave out Levi Stubbs from the Tops. He is one of my favorite male singers from Motown. A powerful voice. May he R.I.P. He always seems like a down to earth cool man. There are many great singers and performers, that's why I try to remember to say "one of." With Diana, I think people are still viewing her from the 1960s. That's more than 50 years ago. She is no longer 24 or even 44 yrs old. She has grown as a person, in my opinion. I just feel some of DR's detractors are also envious of her success. I'm fine with others' views and opinions of her seem more personal, and often, it's based on something they may have heard about her from decades ago. We all have done some things and behaved, not so nicely. Should we be held to that for the rest of our lives? I haven't heard anything new in terms of negative behavior about Diana that mirrors behavior we heard of her earlier years, in many, many years. I keep seeing videos recycling things from 40 or more years ago. I do respect your opinion, though .Sorry for the long reply.🤣

Dianna Ross was an average singer who through cunning and deception became lead singer of the Supremes. Ballard screwed herself out of a brilliant opportunity for a prosperous, longtime career.
Neither Diana nor Gordy made Flo miss concerts, interviews, recordings and rehearsals. They didn't make her start fights whenever she did actually show up.
No one held down Flo or cast her aside.
    Again, she screwed herself.
The really sad part is that even Flo's "fans" don't care about her.
