I'm curious whether any interviewer has delved into the theological and philosophical meaning of Daniel's art in some deeper ways. I mean, it has always seemed obvious to me that his use of a lot of elements are are more "childish" - high falsetto voice, misspelling, instruments that are often associated with children's music, very silly and simplistic ways of expressing very serious subjects, dressing up, etc. - is really the musical and dramatic embodiment of the central tenet of Christ's teaching that one must "become as a child" in order to enter into the Kingdom of God. To my mind, Danielson is, in that sense, one of the most interesting manifestations of theological art in the Christian tradition. In one way there is almost nothing about his music and art that hasn't at least tried to fully absorb Christianity in a way that most "Christian music" can't even begin to fathom, and in comparison "Christian music" is quite shallow and unChristian.
If anyone knows of such an interview, could you pass it along?
And, if Daniel Smith is reading this and interested, I'd love to chat about it. Also, thank you dad again for sending me the free sheet music he sent me back in the 90's. It was a nice surprise!
