    As you know, I LOVED this book!! It was another that my friends and I all passed around and obsessed over. I saw the movie in a theater, and I was amazed by it. . . that being said, if anyone saw the movie and hated it or was just confused, I would still cautiously recommend the book, because it has a very different feel and makes it much clearer WTF story you just consumed.

      Sorry for being so late for this thread, but do you realize that this novel you are talking about is a brutal critique on gender relationships?
      Sersily, sees the men who open up to her as mere animals to be baited and ground up for her own goals.
      She is not attracted to them. She does not connect emotionally to them. And she is indifferent to their terrible fates.

    This is my absolute favorite book and I've read it over and over. We live in America but took a trip to the Scottish Highlands in September, and were fortunate enough to stay at a B&B on Tarrel Farm which was Michel's inspiration for Ablach Farm. We found so many locations that are mentioned in the book so it felt like I was walking in Isserley's shoes - it was so amazing! Thanks for your spoiler-free review - it really is hard to talk about without giving the twist away!

      Glad you loved it as much as I did! I'm so jealous that you got to visit the Scottish Highlands (especially after reading this book). And, yeah, it's such a hard book to review in a spoiler free way. I really struggled trying to film this one. haha

    I really enjoyed Under the Skin, too! It was a very surprising book, I didn't really know what I was getting into. I was also sucked in by the writing style. It had a really nice dark tone and a lot of interesting ideas - I really liked the questions of morality that it delved into, and the journey the main character went through.

    • @TheShadesofOrange
      @TheShadesofOrange  5 лет назад +1

      Oooh it's nice to hear from someone else who's read it. I went it super blind, which probably added to my enjoyment. I usually don't like books that deal so heavily with morality, but this one really worked for me. Have you read Book of Strange New Things? I really want to read that one now, even though I'm sure it's quite different.

    This book was so fantastic! You're right, it's very difficult to discuss without stealing the joy from folks who haven't read it yet!
    The film was very different, but I feel like it explored different topics and ideas and much different, more abstract way.
    If you enjoyed this, I think you might enjoy 'Annihilation' by Jeff VanderMeer. The Annihilation trilogy is collected in one volume called 'Area X'.

    I couldn't put it down.
    I didn't just find Isserley sympathetic I wanted to give her a hug. She has been so horribly mistreated by her own kind that she mistrusts everyone. Of course if I tried to console Isserley she would probably hit the icpathua button (assuming I am not too scrawny).
    But I think that is the cleverness of the book. It takes an outlandish plot devices and makes it seem perfectly everyday. Isserley is terrifyingly alien, yet she is also down to earth. Her society is like something from an episode Dr Who, but it operates in such a logical way that it feels realistic. Vodsil economics and human economics seem to have a lot in common.

      I watched the movie last night, I can tell from your comment that the book is so much more spelled out, Ive heard this other places too. They never state her name or what her relationship is to the other mysterious entities that also seem to be aliens. They don't spell out what exactly is being done to the men. I did get the sense she was being used as bait and she becomes more sympathetic as the movie goes on. I dont know, I personally liked the ambiguity of the movie.
