Zaouli is a traditional mask dance of the Guro ethnic group of Côte D’Ivoire that was created in the 1950s, legends agree the inspiration behind the dance was a beautiful girl named Djela Lou Zaouli daughter of Zaouli.
THE MASK
Although the Zaouli dance is performed by men, the Zaouli mask represents feminine beauty.
The mask is Made of Yaranza wood and can take six days to carve.
THE LEG MOVEMENT
The leg movements are fast and furious and steps must not be repeated, the upper body remains almost still, while the legs and feet create a mesmerizing spectacle, during the performance the dancer changes once he wears the mask and he becomes possessed by the spirit of the mask
He's separated from all that is happening around him Once he puts the mask on, it will no longer be him dancing, but the spirit that possesses his body.
when this happens the dance becomes fast and furious; the masked man churning up dust beneath his feet. Provoked to keep up the pace by [the frenetic rhythm of the drum and flute], it’s a superhuman effort guided by the spirits.
THE BEAT
The beat is completely out of this world and the unique part of the Zaouli dance is that drummers actually flow the dancer not the other round.

The dance I saw for the first time in my life was filled with surprise, shock and joy. I was very happy to find that the Zaouli dance mask is similar to the traditional Japanese gagaku "bugaku-men". The scene where a cloud of dust boiled high into the air from the dance of stepping on and kicking the ground was dynamic and moving. thank you very much.
One of the most fascinating native dance around the globe. I could watch them for hours. The mask and the rest of the costume is actually completing this great show.Another very exciting dance is IMO the Kecak dance of Bali,Indonesia.

I am no expert but I did have some thoughts from what I know.
I found it interesting that Belly Dance also has the musicians follow the dancer, as does Flamenco. Also that the mask is feminine; there is a worldwide tradition of alternative sexuality in dance. Also that it seems to me that African-Americans have preserved so much dance tradition from Africa. Also that the modern dance style called Shuffle has this same groove of relatively more emphasis on footwork with a mostly still body.

Thanks so much for the information. I have watched Zaouli dance videos before, and we could not decide whether the beat followed the dancer, or the dancer followed the beat. Or perhaps the beat changes were predetermined and therefore expected. So it is interesting to know that beat follows the dancer. Which, is amazing, given the tight synchronisation, and no visible lag between the ever changing dancer's moves and the percussion.

Great breakdown. But what I want to know is... Where they install the hydraulic springs in the Dancers' legs, and where they put the ball joints in the Dancer's ankles in order for them to do this crazy stuff. Crazy as in 'mind-boggling' intricacy. They used to have to draw cartoons to do stuff this crazy that they didn't think was Humanly possible. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
