  • A visit to the Cork Gaeltacht to see how a flute is made.
Hammy Hamilton is from Belfast. He recently moved to Cúil Aodha in the Gaeltacht region in County Cork, and set up a flute making workshop.
He demonstrates the process of making a flute from the raw piece of bubinga, a wood from South America, to the final product.
Hammy Hamilton plays a tune on the flute accompanied by two young musicians, one on tin whistle and the other on bodhrán.
This episode of ‘Youngline’ was broadcast on 31 January 1980. The presenter is Pat Butler.

After watching this I am going to ask that fine craftsman, Mr Hammy Hamilton, a flute, I can not play but I learn using this special musical instrument

Nothing sounds better than the breathy tone over the round notes of a wooden simple system flute. Nice video demonstrating the process of making a flute, and nice playing, too!
I hope CR posts some footage of uilleann pipemaking as well. Surely there must be clips of Willie Clancy, Leo Rowsome or Eugene Lambe at work.

@@joebyrne5277 thanks! I had a chance to watch it and it was great. My son has a Lambe D chanter that with our wonky Colorado weather’s effect on the reed is currently closer to Eb. Just be patient, don’t mess too much with the reed and it will be back to D in a few days hopefully

That was crazy seeing tusks laying out on the table. These days, it seems like a flute with any ivory on it would be a headache to travel with. I would have loved to have had them talk a bit more about his reasoning behind using the ivory instead of an alternate material. I guess it was just a desirable look?
