Hey now….I am now one of those old ladies in a crochet club……lol….and guess what the ladies LOOOOVVVVEEE having young men visit and learn to crochet…..
When I visit my grandma in wales, (she’s part of a crafting club and it’s mainly knitting and crochet) I join her club crocheting and the old ladies love having someone my age there
I think the stiffness is down to tension. I’d have used a larger hook to make the fabric more drapey. Steam blocking would help too. Also I agree, adjusting the length would be a big help too. Love it though!!
Once it's washed a couple times, it will soften up. Wash in gentle cycle, dry in dryer, low heat or air dry. I too am a freehand hooker. I love creating as I go. Maybe you should have sc around the whole edging to give it a more finished/neater look. 💐🥰
Not using a pattern is definitely NOT wrong. I learn so much more and have so much freedom by learning to combine stitches and techniques over reading patterns. Patterns only make you crazy. Good work💕
I love this and YOU! Perhaps if you put in "darts" (I believe that's what their called lol) to give more shape and wind protection to the forehead/ head? I think it's versatile, kind of you to do, and impressive being impromptu! Keep going Darlin, I'm a fan❤
You could use a bigger needle to give it some flow, I would also decrease (or increase - I didn’t really see which direction you went) but to give the hood shape around the face, so it curves around and you don’t get that weird point above your forehead. But great job without a pattern!
I crochet the hood separately and sew it on the top. That way you have more scarf to wrap around. And when things feel too stiff I throw it in the dryer on low with a dryer sheet for 10 minutes. Softens right up without enough time to damage anything. I decided to start spinning my own yarn thinking it would save me money 😂😂😂 hundreds of dollars later (spindles, wheel, wool, dye) I'm really good at it but the wool costs a lot more than yarn. But now I'm hooked. 😊
Looks great!!! I'd make the scarf part wider so it can keep the neck warm....I like the "times are tight comment"...I find my yarn sometimes from thrift stores.
Lovely yarn by the way! You can use wool care detergent to soften it lightly, but keep in mind that it might get even tighter after the first wash, no matter what you do.. You can always use a larger hook with this type of yarn, relieving some tension. Make sure to not use warm water to avoid shrinkage. Always air-dry horizontally, making sure the crocheted piece is as flat and straight as possible, since it will keep the shape it dries in. The rest is up to lady luck!
If you use a bigger hook, the fabric will be more drapey. Also, using a prettier stitch for solid yarn can make a big difference. Rich textures crochet here on RUclips has lots of pretty stitch tutorials.
Fold the edge back…it will mold to the wearer, as well… This is a great piece, congratulations! Could be lined with a piece of quilt, too. Don’t attach and you could make seasonal linings!
It’d definitely a length and width issue. I made myself one a few years back with an extra long scarf and used 3.5 balls of yarn. I added some cat ears a few years later, too, lol Edit: it still looks great!
I think it looks great! You can leave it in softener overnight to soften the yarn and the hoodie can fold the edge back if you'd like but overall, it looks great being it freehand❤
I think this is so awesome that you have taken a modern take on a very old-fashioned article of clothing. Believe it or not people used to make things like this in the 1800s. So I am just very Amazed to see this, and it’s such an encouragement
I would prefer wider longer scarf it it were mine. It gives me grandma vibes, but that just probably means its back in fashion again and im unaware, like the grandma cardigans a few years back. It looks fine tho
I think it’s really cute. Love the color. I’d make the scarf part longer and thinker but it get to -50 where I live in Idaho so we take our cold weather clothes pretty serious! Your work is great, LOVE your personality!❤
If you sew down diagonally across the "pointy" part of the hood and turn it inside out, it'll get rid of the pointy top. Also if you make the scarf part longer you can crochet up the sides (i just border the whole thing to hide my stitches) and turn the ends of the scarf into pockets!!! You can also crochet cat ears and paw prints into the pockets so it's like a cute cat get up. (I did this for my niece and added a cowl with a cat nose and whiskers.)
Acrylic yarns that are stiff and not fuzzy can be washed or just wet down and soaked in rinse in rinse out hair conditioner and water or a little liquid fabric softener can be used as it is the same active ingredients. Breaking the surface of the water is better than a long soak if you are in a hurry. Do not overdo the hair conditioner or fabric softener. If you do overdo it, use dish soap to get the extra oils out. What I say applies to acrylic, not fuzzy, not velvet style yarns. Wool or silk or whatever might not be safe or might not improve with what reccomend. I love it.
For the stiffness, I would say to use a crochet hook bigger than the one you used by 1mm. So if you used a 7mm, use an 8. Also, steaming and stretching it truly helps so much. I saw in other comments to used more yarn and I agree! However, it does look cozy and, as someone who also hardly uses a pattern, you did a really good job!
Make the scarf piece wider so it covers more and doesn’t look like noodles lol but other than that this is cute and really good for your first time with no pattern
It looks good. To be more effective, i would have made the scarf part wider, like 15-20 rows, and a bit longer so as to drape more down the front to be a draft dodger for the chest like most scarves. I love just freestyle crocheting. It's so relaxing.
i’m in the process of making a very similar project, but i divided it into smaller panels, and made decreases on the sides so it curves a little, following the shape of the head. yours looks great!!
I think the scarf would lay better if you turn the piece, so that the scarves come out of the hoodie horizontally instead of vertically. And if the scarf is a bit wider you could also use it to cover bottom of your face that way !
I like to put the seem of the hood at the back of the head and then crochet the scarf separate and attach it after. Idk if that's how it supposed to be done lol I never follow patterns. I LOVE the color you chose! So pretty
I remember when I went through a loom knitting phase I made one for my grandma and she looked so cute! I didn’t use a pattern either, but that was because I was following something that said to just make a scarf, fold it in half, and then sew the edges near the center together to form the hood. It actually worked really well, the only tricky part was figuring how much to sew
Buddy you crack me up! I like your channel. Look into medieval hats. They had extra long tips to wrap around their head, neck, etc. they look like elf hats. Not sure what a schoodie is, but it looks like it's trying to emulate the medieval hats. Nice work! 👍
I think you might want to try using a bigger hook to avoid that tight fabric with little drape. I love Caron cakes too!! But when using, try sizing up on hooks/needles for better drape!
My grandmother made me one of these when I was a little kid. (A looonnnng time ago. lol) Her version was a long scarf that she folded in half, then used leftover yarn to crochet one edge shut from the fold. (About 1 ft.) I'm not surprised the pattern has changed so much from then, but it makes me happy to see people still making them!
I don't know how qualified I am, but I've made two of this kind before, but where the scarf is round and you have to pull it over your head. The scarf part was made with single crochet into the back loops, and the hood added right on with double crochets. A thing I did do with my second one was lowering my stitches in the middle of the top (where it was going to be sown together), to single crochets and even some slip stitches, so it wouldn't have that much of a pointy tip.
Yee've outdone yourself and it looks awesome! Forgive me, I'm a dork and your name is fun. Anyways, I just started crocheting within the past year and I have fallen head over heels in love with the craft. I'm gonna let your scoodie be motivation because I have wanted to make one and I am stuck on using patterns. Oh, and the tag is icing on the cake! Great job!
If you crochet basically, what you did except for the tails of the scarf. Just keep going to double the length but, instead of long scarf ends do it in a round. Then that foulds up inside the hoodie and covers the face during cold and windy days. There are lots of tutorials out there! Starting mine today. 🤗💕
It's pretty but not good in a really cold weather. I have a cowl with hood, hat (slst brim only), and when it's really cold/windy/snow I'll add another cowl 😅 Maybe if you made scarf wider and longer?
The only issue I would say that doesn't involve even more yarn is that it looks like you maybe sewed the hood a bit tight, causing that dip. There are really good resources on RUclips for seamless joining and it took me some time to also control my need to sew tightly to feel like it will be secure 😅 Other than that, it's a matter of proportions. I think since you were trying to stick to one cake, you probably got the best shape you could with the least yarn (and girl don't we all feel that squeeze! I often wish crochet hadn't become so mainstream because now they really know how to get money from us and like 90% of our fellow yarn crafters are also yarn hoarders, myself included. 😂😭) I'd say if you wanted to try this again and get it to look luxurious and extra cozy (though it looks quite cozy now, I promise! You did great!) it's gonna need to be at least 2-3" wider on the scarf part and just a bigger hood. I don't think it's a bad yarn choice, it's just stiffer because it's not big enough to collapse luxuriously around the head 😂. While you could opt for a smaller gauge yarn, it wouldn't feel as cozy-- my view is you made the right choice, especially since it is practical for winter! (though I guess if you REALLY wanted to give yourself alot of extra work, you could line the hood if you made it out of thinner yarn.... But meh. It's better just to be thick and cozy) Keep up the great work ❤❤❤

The linen stitch leaves a nice drape as well.
I was going to say the same thing!!! A bigger hook should definitely solve this problem
When it's washed, it will loosen up and be much softer 💕

You can “kill the yarn” in the drier if its acrylic. If it’s a natural fiber then a larger hook to loosen gauge.
Pretty good without a pattern! Definitely could've used a larger hook as it is a bit stiff now. On the other hand it is probably very warm this way!
