In the third episode of our Pizza Tower music analysis series, we delve into some of the most memorable tracks from the game, including "Tombstone Arizona," "Cold Spaghetti," "Hot Spaghetti," and "Thousand March."
We start by examining "Tombstone Arizona," a track that features a driving beat with a repeating motif that builds to an exciting climax. We'll look at how the track uses syncopation and a descending bass line to create a sense of tension and forward momentum.
Next, we'll explore "Cold Spaghetti," a track that features a funky, upbeat rhythm and a catchy melody. We'll discuss how the track uses a mix of live and electronic instrumentation to create a unique sound that complements the game's playful aesthetic.
Moving on, we'll analyze "Hot Spaghetti," a track that starts off slow and builds to a frenetic pace. We'll talk about how the track's use of tempo changes and dynamic shifts creates a sense of excitement and urgency, and how the instrumentation builds to a chaotic climax.
Finally, we'll discuss "Thousand March," a track that features a simple yet effective rhythm and a haunting melody. We'll look at how the track uses dissonance and shifting harmonies to create a sense of unease, and how it underscores the game's more dramatic moments.
Through our analysis of these tracks, we hope to provide a deeper understanding of the music in Pizza Tower and the various techniques used to create memorable game music.

The composer is likely composing everything in a modern DAW. So he's probably working with a piano roll of some sort, unless he's using something exotic like Renoise (and if he is, he is indeed a wizard: Trackers are hard to use). He might also be playing some of these parts out by hand on a keyboard, maybe even recording the guitar stuff in the graveyard stage... Though that does sound like sampled guitar, so it's possible he's just got really good samples and is taking the time and effort to use them to full effect.
The composer has incredibly wide range, so it's hard to second guess exactly what he's doing in places. He absolutely knows what he's doing, that's for sure. Some of the sounds he's mixing together I know from experience fight with each other, and are very hard to get to play nice.

Pizza Tower is one of those rare games in which the majority of the soundtrack is just hit after hit.
Normally, any given game may have a small selection of standout tracks that everyone generally agrees are the best of the collection; there may be some debate as to which is the absolute _best,_ but the general quality amongst them is colloquially agreed upon. Pizza Tower by comparison is a game that traverses so many different styles and genres, yet consistently nails each one, leading rather surprisingly to a situation in which the fans will spend time debating how they stack up against each-other due to personal taste; "It's all good, but which one's your _favourite?"_ is the discussion that arises. It's somehow _more_ divisive, yet also leads to _greater_ fandom cohesion, due to the opportunity it provides to discuss your tastes and preferences in earnest without fear of judgment or ridicule - because it's all good, we all know it and we all like it, so it's just about sharing in the positive vibes of the whole experience.
Man, Pizza Tower is just great. What a great game.

What I love about Thousand March, it’s obviously inspired by warfare, but to the degree that it captures all those mixed emotions is phenomenal. It’s like a video explained only by audio. That intense feeling the main “riff” or whatever gives, you can imagine an overview of intense combat while bombs and artillery is raining from above. Once the violin kicks in you can see the people on the ground struggling to hold their ground. When it eventually gets to the violin solo, it’s an epic melody of victory, but just as much sadness and tragedy, and the pain goes all the way to eleven when the synth solo kicks in and eventually flatlines. The song then marches on like before, the war goes on.
Don’t get me wrong, war is a horrible thing. This theme in my opinion captures all the aspects and emotions of it perfectly, the intensity in the main theme, the pain in the violin and tragedy in the solos.
I love this theme, almost made me cry first time I heard it.

I think war is the only one of two levels in the game that doesn't play Pizza Time or The Death That I Deserviolli, which after actually finding out that there is a Lap 2, means you can appreciate the song since there are pretty much no more enemies and *your internal rage because the level was designed with the shotgun in mind so you still keep losing momentum*.

Not sure if you know this or not, the track is called Thousand March, and its played in the level War. The theme not so much conveys heavy Daft Punk vibes. I'm not dissing them, they're really damn great. xD But the theme is supposed to convey being in a war zone. The marching feet that you can hear prominently at the end of the track is mostly played throughout the track. Like marching soldiers. And the gimmick of the level is that you have to go through it, shooting your shotgun at enemies trying to stop you. And you have to get through the level, and get out within a time limit.

One thing I just noticed is that Thousand March has this reoccurring distant explosion sound throughout the entire track (not sure whether it is an actual sample of an explosion or instrument replicating the sound), which is very telling with the level’s context - you’re in a war zone and you’re racing against the clock to find each detonator or you’re completely done for. This is the only level that gives little room for error (honestly the one level you’ll get the most game-overs). Also suggests that there’s explosions constantly going off in the distance as more and more of your fellow soldiers have potentially perished with each explosion you hear.

I’d recommend the other Spaghetti tracks! “Spaghetti,” a song used in older demo builds, cut from the final so Hot Spaghetti could play for more than 2 rooms, and “There’s a Bone in my Spaghetti,” the Theme of Pizzascare, a faster and harder version of Pizzascape.

Pizza Tower's soundtrack is a damn miracle. Every stage theme fits the feel of the levels you go through, and each one's super catchy to boot. If you haven't already, I'd definitely recommend actually playing the game to hear each song in its context. For instance, "Hot Spaghetti" and "Cold Spaghetti" play in the same level, just in different areas of the stage as you progress through it, and the transition between the two is (as far as I can tell) pretty seamless.

  • @TheAdvertisement
    @TheAdvertisement 9 месяцев назад +3

Was not expecting Tombstone Arizona to be one of the first songs you covered but I'm so glad you did. It and Hot/Cold Spaghetti are much more (relatively) contemporary songs compared to It's Pizza Time! They focus a lot more on building up their area, letting the mood shine before the final mad dash begins. The amount of atmosphere this game can give with just some fluid MS Paint animation and awesome music is amazing.
Also absolutely loved you jamming on your wawa violin to Cold Spaghetti, that was perfect.
And then... then there's Thousand March. War is in a league of its own, I'm not even sure how to explain it. It's like if the original Doom Music was made in the modern day, but at the same time that violin part with that repeating pattern combines with it to elicit a feeling I can't describe. It really tries to portray the scale of the action going on, and for the final level of the game it's perfect for testifying the stakes.

If you’re looking for more weird and experimental, I’d recommend the Splatoon series. It has multiple in game bands each with their own styling and genres. Here’s a few of my favorites.
Chirpy Chips: They’re sort of a rock-chiptune fusion. They’ve been around since the first game and are fairly easy to understand and vibe to. My favorite song of theirs is either Blitz It or Shellfie.
Squid sisters: Very much a pop band, as well as the only band to have fully appeared in all 3 games. Calamari Inkantation is basically splatoon’s main theme
C-side: One of the newest bands and definitely hard rock, bordering on metal in some of their songs. Clickbait is an absolute banger
Ink theory: Very jazz, but with some more weird additions. One of the main members of it plays the kazoo and it somehow manages to sound good. I’d recommend Riptide Rupture
Bottom feeders: Celtic folk metal. My recommendation is Seafoam Shanty, as it is just a banger.
Turquoise October: Definitely on the weirder experimental side, but they still are a good listen. I think the closest genre to them is breakcore? Either way Tentacular Circus is the most indicitive of their usual music
Dedf1sh: I don’t even know what genre you’d call here music, but her music is simultaneously calm and unnerving. Using a lot of loops, samples, and the like. Personal recommendation is #11 Above or #8 Regret
Omega-3: Easily the weirdest, using odd time signatures and time signature changes frequently. Employing a Cello, Timpani, and DJ, I think you could call them neo-classical mathcore? Maybe? I’d say Deluge Dirge or Frothy Waters are the only way to explain them
I do understand if you choose not to cover them, as Nintendo doesn’t play nice with copyright, and they’re weird as hell, but if you ever have some free time I’d say the songs and bands I listed are a good starting point. Enjoy! Or don’t, I can’t tell you what to do.

"Tombstone Arizona" takes place on a level called the "Wasteyard", so it makes sense that it'd give off a "Castlevania Vibe"; definitely a good spooky tune for Halloween. Personally, I think "There's a Bone in my Spaghetti" is even more Castlevania-themed, hopefully you'll check that out sometime.
Speaking of Spaghetti, though, one thing in common with "There's a Bone in my Spaghetti", "Cold Spaghetti" and "Hot Spaghetti" is that they're all variants of a song that didn't make it into the final game simply called "Spaghetti". I actually would like to see you react to that sometime, there's actually a lot of older or cut songs for Pizza Tower that are pretty good and worth listening to. Fun Fact, there are many Pizza Tower fans who consider Spaghetti to be the theme of the main character "Peppino". Cold Spaghetti in particular is probably one of the most "Wario Land"-sounding tracks in the game, by the way.
"Thousand March" was a song I didn't give much though when I initially heard it, probably because the level it plays on, "War", is so frantic that I didn't pay close attention to it. Since then, though, it's become one of my favorite tunes from Pizza Tower, it's just so intense, and it's even got some dramatic and emotional moments mixed into it. It feels very climatic, which is fitting for both the level and where the level is place din the game.
Some other tracks to check out: There's a Bone in my Spaghetti (as mentioned before), Oregano Mirage, Tubular Trash Zone, and Good Eatin'. Looking forward to more reaction videos from you!

First, Thousand March, which sounds a LOT like Beatup from Homestuck Volume 10, the final album released after Homestuck ended. Beatup being a remix of one of the oldest characters themes in the whole series, Beatdown.
Second is Tombstone Arizona, which has several elements that sound very similar to Black Rose/Green Sun.

It's not the one I would rank as the best on the soundtrack, but it's my personal favorite because when I listen to it with my eyes closed, I feel like going to ascend to a higher plane of existence.

The comment about Daft Punk reminds me of a quote
"Daft Punk isn't quite mainstream, but mainstream *really* wants to be Daft Punk."

please do the whole OST, hearing you talk about these topics about how the songs are put together is very entertaining and relaxing! 😊
