  • It's not often you see an angry Bullied ! Or in this case, a furious Bullied ! This was one of the best performances from 2014 (07/09/14) and without doubt the loudest Southern loco, I have ever heard.
    Enjoy !!

    1948. 34020 with 10 bogies, took over a western express (that was due to be double headed) @ last minute when engines derailed at N Rd. Engine man was Bill Lodge, 23 late start off Plymouth . It must have sounded similar. I expect firebox was kept filled right up knowing them junction men, with white feather. Fireman was chap called Melhuish. Western men travelled up on footplate with them, marvelled at the full head of steam & boiler full of water. Never had seen anything like that with their ancient kit.
    Was right time St David’s.
    Just another ordinary day out for a West Country. 🙂

    Simply breathtaking video and performance from a Southern loco which I had never rated too highly, but I do now I've seen what they are really capable of! The fireman must have been throwing everything he could at the firebox and it looked as if most of the fire was going straight up the chimney! Thanks for a great video.

    When I was in secondary school in Woking, we were right next to the main line and this engine along with many many others to rattle pass the school and the famous one being The Bournemouth Belle, which always came by at 1pm. We waited for it to seem who was pulling it
    Happy memories.

    Still a fantastic piece of film all these years later, and showing what a Bulleid engine could really do on a dry, oil-free rail. Probably the fastest ascent of Hemerdon by steam in this century? It certainly puts many others' efforts in the shade. Just brilliant! Thank you.

      +Marsh Steam Videos™ Read Cecil Alan's book on the 1948 loco exchanges and you will find that this is not a one-off performance. Bulleid pacifics can really climb IF they can get traction. The problem was/is mainly that traction was not predictable, sometimes there even in the wet, sometimes hopeless even in the dry. What the GWR contingency may find hard to swallow is that this it true of 4-6-0s too, though to a lesser degree. A Bulleid in form that is gripping is almost impossible to trump with other British steam, at a cost, high coal and water consumption. OVB had a typically cavalier attitude to this saying the high coal consumption meant that his locos were doing a lot of work!

    It's an amazing contrast to locos of the same power classification with the same load or less struggling so much on Hemerdon Bank. Just look at Nunney Castle taking the same train over the bank, it basically almost stalled!

  • @yvesd_fr1810

    According to the noise of the exhaust system, the regulator is fully open, and the "cran de marche" are also set up to way forward. That means the engine is using a lot of water and coal to generate enough steam to feed the cylinders with no pressure loss in the boiler...

      British First Why is it?

  • @rogercantwell3622
    @rogercantwell3622 5 лет назад +2

    Being pedantic, but most mainline locos are driven on full regulator all the time and the power delivery is adjusted with the cut-off. This gives the best efficiency because the steam isn't throttled on its way to the cylinders but no more steam is used than necessary. In the video the driver is probably using wide open regulator and more than 50% cut-off, hence the noise.

    • @Rosie6857
      @Rosie6857 5 лет назад +1

      (Roger Cantwell) Yes, that's true. It would be silly not to use full regulator for a bank like this, and whatever cutoff is needed.
      I reckon Tangmere was in full gear for this ascent simply on the grounds of the pull required and the speed it was done at. The steam rate would have been absolutely vast and neither the boiler nor the fireman could have kept it up for more than a few minutes but of course that was all that was needed.

    Superb sounds!

    • @BoilerRoom4
      @BoilerRoom4 8 лет назад +5

      +formidable38 That's when the fireman starts shoveling lots of coal. Coal doesn't burn well until it heats up. The fresh, cold coal emits lots of soot, which colours the steam dark grey.

    • @formidable38
      @formidable38 8 лет назад +1

      +BoilerRoom4 Thanks.

    • @eveannwallis4939
      @eveannwallis4939 8 лет назад +1

      +formidable38 The white "exhaust' that you saw was excess steam blowing off through the safety valves, as soon as the boiler pressure dropped below 250psi the valves closed and all you can see then is the exhaust which is a mix of used (exhaust) steam from the 3 cylinders and the hot gases and smoke from the firebox which passes through the boiler tubes to the smoke box where the mixing takes place.

    • @kanishk2991
      @kanishk2991 6 лет назад

      Because it was moving upwards, thereby using more power and due of pressure on engine, it became whitish to dark.

    A truely fantastic performance from the bullied crew! Just makes me wonder why so many other steam locomotives which are 'on paper' have superior performance stats can't blitz it like Tangmere just did. I've seen plenty of vids and in person of Castles and Kings really struggling up this grade, No more than 15mph. Is it a case of having the right crew who really know the ins and outs of some locos and not others? I just watched a clip a Duchess of Sutherland, not struggling par say but having a fight on it hands. On paper thats things a beast, it should easily match a west country class. But here we are.

The numerically closest of her 20 surviving sisters are 34016 Bodmin and 34023 Blackmore Vale. 'My' loco was 34037 Clovelly which once took my grandmother and me from Southampton to Waterloo (Clovelly was withdrawn in the same month as 34021 Dartmoor and, sadly, also didn't survive).

      A 'Bullied' is how we describe this locomotive. It's also the name of the locomotive designer....aka Oliver Bullied, chief mechanical engineer of the Southern Railway. In terms of what you've just seen, the locomotive has climbed one of the steepest railway gradients in the U.K at impressive rate of speed for it's class specification. The engines are known for a soft exhaust sound but not in this case. Hope this helps !

      +HughFromAlice A fairly careful calculation shows that if the speed is steady the edbhp is about 2050. There *is* a slight deceleration and the effect is quite large so I'd estimate the edbhp as 1900 or so. From the sharpness of the exhaust and the performance itself the engine is probably in full gear and the steam rate about 37,000 lb/hr, which is vast. A glorious thrash but I doubt if the loco or the fireman could keep it up for very long. It would be interesting to know what the speed was at the bottom of the bank.
