  • The Moog Memorymoog is revered as one of the best classic big analog poly synths of the 80s. Powerful, delicate, but also with a reputation of being very unreliable.

    A 6-voice VCO synth with 3 oscillators per voice. Analog signal chain throughout, but with digital control over parameters. It was the last synth from Moog before they went out of business.
    Made from about 1982 to 1985. After the introduction of MIDI Moog updated the Memorymoog to the Memorymoog PLUS which added MIDI and a poly/mono sequencer.

    Growing up I listened to so much synth-pop and it's only natural that my own music takes inspiration from many of the acts I loved back then. I still love them and listen to them!
    Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Erasure, Thompson Twins, Tears for Fears, The Human League, Propaganda. FGTH, Ultravox, OMD, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, Jean Michel Jarre, Jan Hammer, Alphaville, A-ha as well as loads of artists doing what is now called Italo Disco. And many more great acts like Nik Kershaw, Spandau Ballet, Wham, Dire Straits ++

    Spent my life savings at the time on a new Memorymoog ($2700 U.S.) and DW8000 ($forgot). Upgraded it to a "plus" myself. Was reliable even though the inside was spaghetti of wires.
    Gigged with it for two years. Then it was stolen. Nice demo, brings back memories of hours of tweaking. I have a recording of an all Memorymoog song I wrote with RX-11 drums if you are interested. Thanks for the content sir. R

    I got an early LAMM without sequencer. It is very reliable, mostly the keys want to be played regularly for preventing corroded key contacts.
    For basslines I recommend to layer the Memory Moog with a Behringer Model D via MIDI for some nice extra "oomph" in the lowest frequency range.
    Sure with a midified "real" Mini Moog it might be an even "classier" pairing, but I don´t have that one.
    So, only thing I can say, it blends and sounds gorgeous in conjunction with a Model D.

    The Memorymoog has always haunted me. I passed on one in 2013 to buy a Jupiter-8 for $1000 more. SynthMania then posted a blind test with five Jupiter-8 patches and five Memorymoog patches. One set sounded much thicker and more punchy, I preferred that set and guessed they were JP, and was dead wrong. Fast forward to this year, I took my DSX to a tech who also worked on some of SynthMania's gear, and the tech owned a Memorymoog I had the opportunity to play for a few moments. It truly is the heavyweight champion of analog.

I could get very expressive solos ala Keith Emerson. Too expensive and also the fan noise was a bit annoying for studio use.

    It would have been nice if the Memorymoog had a variable tracking control for Oscillator 3, so that in low frequency mode, the pitch could be tracked to double in frequency over 4 octaves instead of every octave. That would make a better modulation source for Pulse with modulation of Oscillators 1 and 2 for a lush string pad across the entire keyboard.

    Yeah I had one myself in 1992 ...
    Sadly it never work right, the tuning going well but one voice only had like a phase modulation on it mostly time doing so zet zet zet zet zet , like it would modulate extrem narrow pulse just on a peak. Difficult to describe it..
    Finally I could give back then to the one I bought it , a friend that time doing repair of old mostly moog things.. But also he told me later he never could fix it...
    And to say the price then was for the Memorymoog 3000.- swiss franks ( thats also like 3000 Euros bit less )
    I had also my Minimoog ( 2000 .- then ) from him then was many years quite happy with it..
    But the Memorymoog was no lucky story for me... But finally well know even in the book vintage synthesizers stands from the Author : BE PREPARED IF YOU OWN A MEMORYMOOG THERE WILL BE THE ONE AND OTHER SERVICE REPAIR CALCULATE THAT IN IF YOU WANT ONE... haha
    But it is quite a interesting synth sure, the 3 OSC topic is another level in synths as only 2, I like my Summit does that same also my Hydrasynth gives this direction and finally the 2600 is also 3 OSC based...

    Im not a native english speaker, so can’t expalin well but, in modulation/sequencer section, rate speed sound - like a beeping sound, ( even though I don’t play any)…
    Do you know how to stop it or kill it?
    Even if I set the rate speed to zero ,,,
    It really slowly keep beeping… you know what I mean…?
    2. When you record sequencer, I think there must be metronome sound, but I can’t hear metronome sound when I record,,,
    Do you know how to fix it?
    Cheers, looking forward to your help! Subscribed!!!

      The CLICK output is the metronome sound. It's described in the Memorymoog Plus manual at page 1. You can find this manual online.
      This MM was never mine. It belongs to a friend of mine and I have returned it a long time ago so I can't help you, sorry. Best of luck. Cheers :)

      The One can also sound pretty fat, but the MM has way more character. Albeit not technically correct, it can be perceived as a 6-voice Minimoog. If only it had been more reliable …

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  2 года назад +1

      The global tuning of the synth might be off compared to the tuning of the rest of the band, but the Trinity itself will not go out of tune as in oscillators drifting out of tune on an analog synth.

    I have to make do with the Aturia Minimoog emulation the Mini V which I got for free, and to Me sounds very much like what I have heard from the real one and also all the sounds you play around with here also sounds identical and I am very happy with it. It's also alot easier for Me to get the Mini V sound into My daw and recorded then a real physical Moog would be for Me.

    I was about to buy a MemoryMoog back in 1999, but decided against it, since I wanted a Plus. Ended up buying a Korg Trinity V3 instead, for quite a lot more than the punter selling the MM asked.

      @synriser6742 2 года назад +1

      @ghost mall Indeed. The polybrute has it' own character. Also like the ladder filter on it. I know a Moog sounds different but with that ladder filter you can get close. Moog will always sound like a moog still.

    • @marcusfreeweb
      @marcusfreeweb 2 года назад

      Sorry for being a little rude. I think the Memorymoog in this demo sounds distinctively vintage, almost to the point of sounding a little wacky, related (not only) to oscillator out-of-tuning or drifting magic, and imo this „old sound“ cannot easily be recreated on a modern synth, even with some „vintage“ knob feature or random pitch mod trickery.

    • @ulfljung4630
      @ulfljung4630 2 года назад

      @@EspenKraft Well any comparison with other synths is relevent. I think it is a good one but not as good as it's price. 12 k $ is not a resonable price. I have tryed ARP Quadra and it sounds very good but then again it is very costly. Also some of the classics are limited to a few types of music. Many soviet synths are inspired by classic synths. Polivoks is inspired by the Minimoog model D but the filter is totally different and unique. The Elektronika EM-26 is a copy of Roland VP-3300 but is still different. I said it sounded good didn't I? However there are always more interesting synths especially with that pricetag.
