Golden Tickets. If that's not a goldmine for jokes, I don't know what is.
This review is a bit of a setup for the formatting of how my reviews are going to be.

My logic behind two initial tickets has two reasonable explanations:
1) it was meant for Spike
2) Traditionally, a plus one on an invitation is meant for a date. Now that Twilight's making friends, Celestia wants her to get a special somepony.
When the letter showed neither option played through, Celestia sent six tickets back for her and her five friends. Then she sent the seventh as an afterthought because she didn't want Spike feeling left out.
Or she knew this was going to happen and be trollestia
Or ya know, poor communication on twilight's end. Ask her if it's possible to get 6 tickets for the group. If that's not possible? Just send em back before a huge fight breaks out
In that scene where everypony is offering something for the extra ticket, there was actually a pony who said "I'll pay your taxes…"

A thought I had just recently.
All the things that Twilight's friends want to do at the Gala...
Wouldn't it have been much easier to just ask Twilight to send as requests to Celestia?
Applejack wants to sell her apple treats to the Canterlot nobility? Ask Celestia for a sales license for the castle grounds. Such simple, tasty, filling fare would be perfect for the guardsponies, and they'd likely buy everything she could sell them while they were on break.
Rainbow Dash wants to get the chance to impress the Wonderbolts with an in person performance? Twilight could ask Celestia if the Wonderbolts have a talent scout who can take a trip to Ponyville to check out Rainbow's skills.
Rarity wants to meet Prince Blueblood? Twilight could ask Celestia if an introduction could be arranged. (Would certainly go better than what happened.)
Fluttershy wants to see the animals in the royal gardens? Twilight could ask Celestia if she could have a private tour.
Pinkie Pie...okay, she just wants to attend the party. She still needs the ticket.
But seriously, they're already trying to get favors out of Twilight. Why not just ask for her help in getting what they ACTUALLY want?
*After a day of Spike being grossed out Applejack says one thing sexist*

The initial letter began "Hear ye hear ye", not "My faithful student"; it was a form letter sent automatically to several high-level subjects, most likely. Though Celestia should have been sending such to the other five as well from the start (the second ticket is most likely intended so the recipient can bring a date).
Someone probably already said this, but I'm not up for wading through 1,289 comments to look for it right now... sorry.
I feel like the first letter (and two tickets) came from one of Celestia's secretaries (she's a freaking Princess, she has other shit to do than mailing all of the form letters to ponies to be invited to the Gala, presumably) and as it's probably customary to invite a single pony with a plus 1 ticket, that's why Twilight only had two tickets at first. Then, Twilight sent her letter back, and Celestia realized Twilight might want to bring all of the bearers of the Elements with her. The ticket for Spike was probably her trolling. Or an afterthought, since Spike is a buttmonkey.
I dunno, I'm kind of rambling at this point. But when my mom worked for a Mayor's Charity Ball auction thing, they usually sent out ticket invitations with a +1 ticket. If people requested more, they would usually give out more. It's just a common practice to do the +1 thing, as far as I can tell.

Or in this case. Easy solution. Wouldn't be forced to chose between her friends who for tge majority of the episode are being remarkably selfish.

AJSSPACEPLACE yeah from the first time I watched this episode it always struck me how Applejack has a much more practical and legitimate reason than the other 4 who just wanna go to fulfill personal ambitions that wouldn't impact there life outside of that one night.

Maybe, Apple Jacks reason for going to the gala is sadder than we previously thought. Applejack only talked about stuff that would help her business and things that would help her family. That's a little sad that she had no personal goals for the night, and worried about other people more than herself.

It's episodes like this that really teaches me about friendship. It shows how NOT to behave around a friend, i.e. being a suck up that disregards people's feelings in favor of my own goals. Class act, Twilight's friends.
Actually to be honest I'm 98% sure that Prince Blueblood is Celestia's adopted nephew
It would make sense, there were several cases in real life where nobles were adopted into the royal family in order to strengthen ties of loyalty to the royalty. In the case of Celestia, who won't die and thus seems to have an eternal reign, it makes more sense to take this approach than to marry into the royal line. Probably very early on in Equestria's history, the royal house of the Unicorns were "adopted" by Celestia, probably as a condition of her takeover of the country. Thus the descendants of Princess Platinum were still "royalty" even if they didn't hold any actual position of power in the Equestrian government.
I've probably said it before on this same video...I don't remember...

I think the characters should have more diverse and subtle attempts to get the ticket
For applejack, maybe instead of offering her that huge pound of food, offer her a pie, and if she refuses, escort her to a local restaurant you would recommend.
For Fluttershy, maybe instead of just being inside her house, maybe ask twilight and in a subtle, gentle, Fluttershy like manner, and comfort her and tell her you know what's going on and offer to help. That's a good what to earn someone's loot.
For rarity, maybe make the dress the second you hear about it and put in a box. Then, just before you go, make a dress similar-key word similar- to hers and then play you forgot in a subtle manner, heck, maybe you did forget, that would be very nice and rarity like.
For Pinkie, maybe make her simply go around town with twilight and gently and subtly make her happy, like you did with every pony in a friend in deed.
For rainbow, ask twilight to use magic to help clear the clouds, that would make it like you really are just her friend and don't do any real favours to make her think your doing it for the ticket.
For the other random ponies pinkie gets, maybe instead of offering to help gardening and complementing her hair, try some stuff more twilight-esc, like congratulate her on what she did in the first episode, offer to help with her studying, help her advance her magic like spike did in Boast busters.
And that's all I've got, if you have more ideas, comment down on this comment and say so

You know, if Twilight was actually given time to think it through she probably could've come to a reasonable choice. Rainbow Dash and Rarity's fantasies are unrealistic and would most likely get them in some kind of legal trouble, so they're both nos. While Fluttershy's fantasy is harmless, she wouldn't really be participating in the actual event, so I would say no. That leaves Apple Jack and Pinkie Pie. This kind of depends on Twilight's values here. Pinkie genuinely wants to enjoy the party for the party, while Apple Jack wants to take advantage of the crowd there to help her family. Considering how Twilight is characterized as a fact, I would think she would choose Apple Jack, since it would not only help her, but her entire family in a long term way. While Pinkie's desire is the most pure, it wouldn't really affect anything positively afterwards like Apple Jack's would. There you go.
Yeah, that would have been smart too. XD It annoys me too, it makes it look like the writers couldn't find a way for the characters to actually solve the problem so they make a joke out of it.
Well Applejack ended up not making any money (or hardly any). Plus I don't think Twilight wanted to have to choose between her friends and leave everyone else out

There's a good theory that Celestia didn't send EITHER of the first two tickets. Remember, Celestia HATES the Gala. So she would naturally assume Twilight would hate it too. And the first letter was far too formal for it to have been her own words, so it was probably just a generic official invitation sent out to all important ponies plus guest.

In my opinion, applejack's plea is really the best, i mean seriously its a farm, they have so many problems going on with people, the houses, really but rainbow dash, Pinkie pie, Fluttershy, rarity...No...just no, there reasons are just to gain popularity/throw a party/See the animals/try an get a dance with an alicorns nephew...seriously, im sure they'll get that chance again in the FUTURE. especially rainbow and pinkie...maybe fluttershy too but rarity? Honestly no, i would say this is a one in a lifetime opportunity buuut, i might be wrong on that one.

how many episodes have you seen? if you havent seen them all, i can name a few with fluttershy getting some development-dragon shy, hurricane flutteshy, putting your hoof down,stare master, and it actaully is reocurring in some other episodes. she really learns to over come being shy, and is often very assertive, sometimes more so then any other character. check them out.
how often will you be planning to make these? daily? weekly?
