The Qilin is believed to be the most important of the four sacred animals (Qilin, Dragon, Phoenix and Turtle). Whilst the Lion brings good luck and the Dragon is a symbol of pride, wisdom and courage, the Qilin is a benevolent creature that represents peace and harmony. In fact, the Chinese believe that the Qilin would only appear during the reign of a good ruler or shortly before the birth or passing of a sage. Legend has it that a Qilin appeared to the mother of one of China's greatest sages, Confucius, when she was carrying him in her womb.
The Qilin coughed up an inscribed jade tablet that spoke of the greatness of the child she carried. Shortly before Confucius died, the Qilin was injured by a charioteer, a sign that his death was near. While ancient illustrations and literature paint the Qilin as a terrifying creature with its equine-like features covered in scales and enveloped in fire, the Qilin is actually very kind and gentle in nature. Today, you can easily distinguish the Lion dance from the Unicorn's as the latter has a very distinctive musical accompaniment (a sharper, clanging sound in contrast with the Lion's thunderous boom of the drum and gong). Because of its smaller size, the Qilin's movements are more rapid and playful. The Qilin or Unicorn dance is associated with the Hakka Chinese and more popular in the Southern part of China. Today, however, the Qilin or Unicorn dance is gaining popularity as one of the must-sees during grand Chinese celebrations throughout South East Asia, particularly the Lunar New Year.
