What an incredibly complex character. Totally fascinating story. That letter to James Nesbitt's mother at the end is truly heartbreaking and so beautifully written, yet it never even got sent to her. They keep on remaking the Ned Kelly story in films over and over, this one is a potential epic!
We've created a TV series that we are pitching to networks called 'The Bushrangers' and Moonlite is a major character within the series! Lets hope it gets funded.
I don’t know if you had this video planned before we spoke about him, but what a pleasant surprise to see Captain Moonlite on here. I just paid him a visit again a few weeks ago as I went to visit family in Junee. Thanks Shadow. ❤️Jodie from the Gong.
There's something about old hospitals and asylums that just give me the creeps. Visited one a few years back and it's just an eerie feeling ya get. Cheers for stopping by again and for the awesome comment!
I’m about to recreate a silicone head (or living portrait) of Captain Moonlite but casting a death mask of his and sculpting over the top. I have been to the Gaols where he was housed and the Gundagai grave. Very taken by his story.
@@DingoDin the ‘Frederick Bailey Deeming’ silicone head I have made is on display at Geelong Gaol museum. I’m about to finish a replica death mask sculpt of Captain Moonlite, then mould and cast it. After this I will use the death mask sculpture to do the ‘Alive’ version.
SHADOW SHOUT OUT!! That was awesome. I learnt something new today. I can see why the historians suppressed that story, they didn't want it know that gay men were capable of being bushrangers. Love the ending of the lovers reuniting in death over a century later.
I have visited his grave in Gundagai and there are impressions in the dirt near his that could possibly be unmarked graves, I'm hoping James Nesbitt is one of them. I live in Wagga Wagga and he is still talked about to this day.
In 1879 on their way to New South Wales Captain Moonlite apparently sent work to Ned Kelly that he wished to join forces with him. Ned got word back that if they approached them the Kellys would shoot them down...
I think that was said to be a rumour and not started by Moonlite himself but the media at the time due to the fact that the Kelly gang and Moonlites gang were both very wanted at the same time.
I think Captain Moonlite was a generic term for an Irish rural criminal, also the military don't own the word "captain", and it was probably used more loosely in those days
This would make a great movie! I am here in California and found this story interesting and am amazed at the similarities with our own wild west. That letter at the end was so poetic and is sad that his mom never got to read it.
Wow this was interesting it was based in all the areas I have grown up except NSW . My Dad frequently remarks about captain moonlite, but i always assumed he was just a NSW legend so I kind of dismissed it as being dads early childhood legends. Wow this was an awesome video thank you.
He may be famous enough, but it’s still a significant part of his story. I for one have read about him for years but not once did it mention anything about his sexuality. Being possibly the only gay bush ranger in Australia is important and should be highlighted if only for the fact that he was. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
Look forward to your one on Ben Hall... just PLEASE dont rehash the old lies of Hall's wife running off with a policeman while he was in gaol and his stock dying in the yards from thirst. LIES... ALL LIES!!!
Good video but why did you have to push sexuality. The story will tell itself. Nobody cares they were gay. Why is it a defining characteristic?? I'm talking about your title

@@ShadowMatterYT currently have ‘Frederick Bailey Deeming’
I’d be very interested in seeing that too

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying it!
Im impressed how his wish to be buried near nesbit was granted..albeit a century later
Excellent, very interesting, well presented, informative.
Thanks Ronald! Cheers much appreciated 👍😀
I absolutely love the Wild West and it’s great we have our own history of it

I like these. I would love to hear one about Captain Melville, given he operated not that far from where I live. Please :)
I will look into that. Thanks for stopping by and sharing this tip
Fascinating, I never knew this. So much of Australian history is hidden from us.
Why the ranking, when he didn't do military service? Enjoy your stuff no prob. Luv you channel. Is Capt Thunderbolt soon?
Cheers for stopping by again and sharing your thoughts on this.
Yep Captain Thunderbolt will definitely be making an appearance on this series 🤠

not fake, but definitely gay.
Over 100 years later he got his wish. Good on those people.

Thank you so much for that brilliant comment ! Yeah it definitely would make a great movie 🎥🍿
If he's gay they shouldn't call him a BUSH ranger...😉
I didn't know my dad watched this channel 😉 lol nice one 🤣
@@ShadowMatterYT I'm just an old soul.
Hahahaha 🤣
😂😂😂 Took me a minute to get that joke 😅😅😅
Bush stranger
Excellent video 👍

I dont understand why the gay retrik has to be pushed people are still smart enough to see between the lines the story was sullied .
I did a school project of captain moonlight many many moons ago 😂
great stuff, we have a legend over the ditch names George Fairweather Moonlight, didnt kill n rob though
I noticed that you have adopted this name also? You have piqued my interest. Thanks for stopping by and sharing this info 🤠
@@ShadowMatterYT yes he is a hero of mine, pretty sure he spent time in your victoria rush
Do you have o find a spider under every rock?
“Captain Moonlight” has got to be a pretty gay name for the time as well hahaha
That koala is a urban legend
He would caught his fair share of 3 metre flatties I reckon.
Worst thing you can do is put GAY in the title for more clicks etc. Nothing wrong with gay but dont need a headline when he is famous enough.
