"Bring the Family" was my introduction to John Hiatt's music; I've been a fan ever since. I was already a fan of Ry Cooder, but 'Slow Turning" was my introduction to Sonny Landreth, whose playing blows my mind.
One of my favorite JH songs. I never could help but notice the unmistakable influence of Jimmy Webb, which is always a good thing. As a big fan of Sonny Landreth, I’ve got to say that Ry Cooder’s guitar work on the studio version is on a whole other level of brilliance.
I'm a huge fan of Sonny Landreth as well, but I have to agree with you: Sonny doesn't flesh this song out as well as Ry did on the original recording. Perhaps this might be the infamous gig that Sonny spoke of in an interview where he knew that Ry was in the audience watching, and probably judging! 😁 Now if you wanna hear Sonny really stretch out nicely on another of John's slower songs, there is a version of "Tip of my Tongue" on RUclips that is absolutely sublime.
I didn't realize that Sonny Landreth played on at least some portion of Hiatt's tour to promote Bring the Family, I had always assumed that Ry Cooder would have been handling the guitar chores on the road to support that particular record. The first time I actually saw John play was with Sonny and the Goners after Slow-Turning came out. I can't say that I am thrilled with this particular arrangement of what is a lovely tune on the Studio recording, Sonnys guitar is a bit too ever-present here and doesn't really seem to serve the song very well, but elsewhere on RUclips there is a live version of I Stood Up with Sonny playing on it, and it's maybe the best live really really really slow and soulful tune I've ever heard from John Hiatt.
"Some words flew out/ made a crash landing/ no love survived....." Is there anyone here who hasn't lived this at least once?
Love love love John Hiatt
My favorite of John's LP's... Saw this line-up years ago... Sonny is unbelievable..
My favorite slide guitarist, Sonny Landreth!
So good
Like Hiatt very underrated singer, songwriter and guitarist. Excellent live performer.
Could not love a song more. Thank you John Hiatt.
This is one of the best albums ever! His best for sure!
Doesn't get any better than this.... John Hiatt with Sonny Landreth. Truly and American Treasure.
Definately an American Treasure
And it stil is the best song ever!
Bring The Family is one of the most important albums released in 1987.
Absloutely
I won't argue with that.

Dave Ransom on bass and Kenny Blevins on drums. Kenny is also playing drums on John Hiatt's next album, "Same Old Man", due late May.

Lipstick Sunset is a masterpiece, capturing the complexity of a Tennesse Williams novel. unable to return her love, he leaves.
Wanna make musick
I have a bootleg CD of the Little Village tour where Ry's playing on "Lipstick Sunset" is beyond sublime.
Right next to mee
